Opening, he said; "Eight and a half months j ago when I signed the recov- ! ery act I said 'Must we go on in many groping, disorganized, separate units to defeat or shall we move on as one great team to victory." "That team is before me this j morning?3500 leaders of 000 i great organized industries rep resenting, as measured by em ploy inemt, mere than 90 per j cent, of the industrial field which is covered by the NRA. Naturally, I am deeply gratified that the faith wuich 1 expressed last June is so well justified in March." Continuing, the following are some of the high lights: "The real truth is that for a number of year-, in our country the machinery of democracy failed to function." t lA.. i ? .. C /~1 . .. A vperauons 01 urovernmein liad fallen into the hands of special groups . . . led by peo ple who undertook to obtain special advantages for special classes." "I give industry today'this challenge: It is the immediate task of industy to re-employ more people at purchasing wages and to do it now." "Every examination I make, and all the information I re ceive, lead me to the inescapable conclusion that we must con sider immediate co-operation to secure immediate increase in * wages and shortening of hours." "The methods and details of reorganization may and wi.V change from year to year, bm the reorganization must be per manent f >r all the rest of our lives in that we will never per mit the social conditions which allowed the vast sections of our population to exist in an um American way, which allowed a maldistribution of wealth aud power." In concluding he said: "Let us consolidate our gaius and let us resolve that the con solidation shall be for the con tinued progress and especially for the greater happiness and well being of the American people." The State Democratic Execu tive Committee is meeting in Raleigh today at 8 p. m. at the call of State Chairman J. Wal lace Winborne of Marion. The purposes of the meeting are to name dates for precinct meet ings, county conventions and time and place fur the State Convention; to act on resigna tion of Hon. O. Max Garduer, National Committeeman, and any other business which the Executive Committee m a y properly consider. Just think of it! In the enrly 90's, the Gov. rnmeut's gold re serve shrank below $100,000, 000 and President Grover Cleve land sold one hundred milliou Government bonds to restore it. Forty years later, from j February 1st to March 3rd, the Government had $484,222,367, mostly foreign gold, poured in to its reserve, increasing the Government's gold horde to $", 502,486,293, which is more than lield by any other two countries in the world. Catawba county cotton growers expect to get between 280.903 and 985,000 thia year from their rental and parity paymenta. The Young Democratic Clubs of North Caroliua will hold a Jackson Day Dinuer celebration in Raleigh on March 31st. Mrs. Ney Evans is the State Presi dent I'ress The Hut ton By O. II. We always keep an eye on the mule to escape his coming oack. The best argument against the eriti" is his argument. Many a woman goes horse-back riding because she enjoys the "bri dle path." ' "An apple a day keeps the doc tor awav," if you don't get sick. "It's better to wear oejc than to rust out." John Dillinger thinks it's better to break ou.t than to remain in. If John Dillinger can scare so many with a toy gun, what chance woaid companies of soldiers have with a machine gun in his hand? In rural schools the teacher who who doesn't require the pupils to study is the most popular with them and the parents. , There are those who \sight over their glasses to get ;a good aim. Lest she causes trouble, a certain deputy sheriff "will not leave town when the moon is foil. "When I refused to marry Lee three months ago. I didn't knowit was my last chance", replied .""fell. Crime looks so attractive nowa days that many have taken it up as a profession. "Winks," an English setter pup. was the first to eat breakfast at the White House a few mornings ago. It consisted of twelve plates of bacon and eggs, but no coffee. "Why do girls swear?" some one asks.
