amouut of money. Police Officer
Herbert Ausley made the arrest.
? Receipts at Graham postoffice
are showing a healthy increase.
The receipts for April were $1,
169.17, an increase of $130 82
over April, 1937, and for the first
four months this year they were
$4,737.82, an increase of $577.89
over the same period in 1937.
? Residents of this section were
a little frightened a few days ago,
lest a frost or freeze come and
damage fruit and young stuff.

? On a charge o f attempted
criminal assault on an 8-year-old
girl one day last week, at Elon
College, Earl Linville, aged 30
years, of Glen Raven, was com
mitted to jail Tuesday in default
of $5,000 bond to await action of
the Superior Court. The case was
heard before T. H. Perry, J. P.
The girl was assaulted a s she
walked along a street and thrown
over a hedge. The barkiug of a
dog frightened him away.
? The annual May Day pro
gram at Salem College is sched
uled for 5 o'clock Saturday after
noon, and in case it rains it will
be postponed till the next Satur
day. The event is expected to
draw a crowd of at least five
thousand. It will be outdoors
and will be in Grecian mode and
will tell the story of the first May
Day held in the ,1th century B. C.
Miss Betty Scott, daughter of Mr.

Norwood, Graham list- taker, is still
almost as busy as he was daring
April, and when the books are
passed in there will still be some
who have not attended to the
matter. Maybe they think if they
do not list they will escape paying,
having forgot the old adage about
the certainty of death and taxes.
? A Business Club has jast
been launched by the yoong men
of Graham. They held a meeting
at V F W Park Tuesday night.
The meeting nights will be on the
first and third Tuesday nights of
each month. To the next meet
ing, two weeks hence, the ladies
will be invited, and there will be
music, dancing and refreshments,

club will promote things of inter
est and helpful to the community.

Journey to Iowa to Consult
Specialist. *
On Tuesday morning, last week,
Mrs. Paul McPherson of Snow
Camp community left here on a
Oreen <fe McClure ambulance for
MuscAfine, Iowa, to consult a spe
cialist at Dr. Baker's Hospital,
that city. She was accompanied
by her husband and her sister,
Mrs. McPherson, as nurse. Jake
Walker of Green & McClure drove
and was accompanied by M. R.
Neese. They returned Friday
night, having driven 2200 miles,
going and coming.

Amusement Park Incorporated.
A charter of incorporation was
issued Monday by Secretary o f
State Thad Eure to V. F. W.
Amusement Park, Inc., in which
Norman E. Sykee, Don E. Soott,
E. N. Pierce, Geo. K.llolt, Jr.,
and S. R. Holt are named as in
corporators. Authorized capital
stock is $25,000 with $500 sub
scribed by the incorporators.
The incorporators take over
that property known as VFW
Lake, formerly Gantz Lake, about
two miles south of Graham.

sports, bathing, swimming and
boating, with ample grounds and
buildings for outing parties are
included in the property.
This property is capable of be
ing made very attractive. Nature
has done ita share and needs only
to be dressed and cared for to

Show.
During the Green & McClure
Furniture Show last week more
than 5,000 took advantage of the
occasion to see the beautiful and
useful things for the home, many
traveling a score or more milee.
It was a show worth the time and
trouble. The arrangements and
combination no doubt gave many
ideas how to make their homes
more beautiful aud attractive.
Each visitor was requested to
register for a chaueo at the prizes
given away. On Monday night a
child drew tickets from the mass,
and the lucky ones drew prizes as

Announces For State Senate
Dr. Charles H. Rowland Passes
In Greensboro.
Friends and acquaintances in
Graham and Alamance county
will deeply regret to learn of the
death of Dr. C. H. Rowland, 69,
at his home in Greensboro at 1:00
o'clock Sunday night. There he
had been pastor of the Christian
church for more than ten years.
When a student at Elon College,
from which he was graduated, he
was the esteemed pastor of Jra
ham Christian church. DariDg
his nearly 60 years in the minis
try be served a number of church
es and held a high place in the
councils of his church. For 25
years he was a trustee of Elon
College. The funeral was conduct
ed from the church in Greensboro
Tuesday afternoon and the burial
was at Elon College.
Dr. Rowland is survived by his
wife, who was Miss Birdie Ura
ham, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
Henry Graham, near Union Ridge,
and three daughters, Miss Mar
garet Lane Rowland, Mrs. W. E.
Wisserman and Mrs. M. T. Garren.

DEATHS
Mrs. Polly A. Clapp, 74, the
wife of ttobt. L. Clapp, died at
9:06 o'clock Wednesday night at
her home on Market street. In
the past several years she rarely
left home on account of afflictions.
Prior to her death she had been
seriously ill for three weeks. She
a native of Guilford county
and a daughter of Jonathan and
Rachel Shoe May and Graham
had been her home for 44 years.
Besides her husband she is sur
vived by i wo sons, Howard and
Floyd, the former and a daughter,
Mrs. Ada Cook, live in Graham.
Floyd's home is in Danville. Also
there are 17 grandchildren and 5
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted
Friday at 2 o'clock from the
Baptist church by her pastor,
Rev. R. P. Ellington; interment
in Lin wooil cemetery.
Charles C. Neat, 71, died April
23rd at his home near Whitaett.
On Monday following the funeral
was conducted from t'je home at 2
p. m. by Rev. L. T. Edgerton, and
interment was in Pine Hill ceme
tery, Burlington. He is survived
by his wife, four daughters, Mes
dames A. L. Thompson, E. A.
Pugh and Doyle Jones of Greens
boio, and R. E. Bayne of Bur
lington; two sous, O. M. and P.
H. of Gibsonville; three sisters,
Mi'sdames Nina Burgess of Gra
ham, Carrie Thomas of Hender
son and Florence Miller of Ral
eigh; a brother, J. VV. of Greens
boro, 15 grandchildren and four
great-grand children. Deceased
was the sou of the late Mr. aud
Mrs. Oscar Neal. The family
made their home in Graham at
oue time for a number of years.
