THE GLEANER GRAHAM, N C., OCT. 15, 1942 IMCED EVEBT THCBSDAT J. D.KERNODLE, Editor $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE Eutcred At <bt Postoffloe at (jr&ham, I.CL. at- *?*-oad-clAM mailer. Congress is considering a measure of lowering the draft age to 18 years'. Airplane production lias hear, stepped up to 5,000 a month. We can't win the war without them. Wendell Willkie is back from a round-the-world tour as Presi dent Roosevelt's personal repre sentative For seven weeks he has been on a tour to our allies to get first-hand information. He started over the Atlantic and re turned over the Pacific and ar rived in Washington yesterday from the West. He visited in their order Britain, Egypt, Tur key, Russia and China, and got close to the firing lines. A full report of his observations is not available, but a sum-up is: a second front is necessary, we will win the war, and that it will be costly. SCRAP IRON! It is ordinari ly thrown aside as worthless af ter the tool or implement has served its purpose and is no more useful. Iron workers have found it to be absolutely essen tial in making steel. Steel is es sential in the production of the implement? of war. A nation wide and state-wide newspaper campaign is on for the most of this month for the collection of scrap. Millions of tons are being collected to be used for war pur poses. All of it is needed- Gather it and rush it to the scrap dealer. You can in that way perform an act of patriotism. North Carolina's more than 18 millions surplus has made sportsmen out of some of the state's higher-up citizens. Of ficials paid out of state funds are asking for more pay. State supported schools are increasing their budgets past the million mark with an eye on the surplus. Education now is more essential than ever, but the cause will not be set back seriously to stand by or near to the current budget un til the war crisis is over. For ? the next one or two years there is small prospect of state's sur plus remaining ait the present figure. Let's abandon the un seemingly scramble. THE WAR The Russian front has had the spot light for 50 days. The slaughter has been terrific, but Hitler's armies have failed. Sta lingrad though awfully l?attered, still stands as a monument to Russian valor. Activity has increased on the Egypt front. The Japs have increased their efforts on the Solomon islands, but have almost been drives off the Aleutians. As a whole the situation for the Allied Nations seems to have improved in the past week. tfUDGE PARKER President Roosevelt has been asked to name Judge John J. Par ker, senior Judge of the Fourth District of the U. S. Circuit, to succeed Justice James F. Byrnes, who resigned to accept the post of director of economics stabili zation. ( That Judge Parker is from Charlotte, in the southeast, as was Justice Byrnes of South Carolina; is perhaps the first reason for making the request; and the second is far more im portant : Judge Parker is a learn ed lawyer and the peer of any member of the country's highest tribunal. There is unanimity in North Carolina in desire for the ap pointment of Judge Parker to the vacancy. Gov Broughton has telegraphed his endorsement of Judge Parker to the President. County bar associations have joined in unanimous petitions. From all sections of the state the voice is for Judge Parker. President Hoover named Judge Parker, but there was a quibble over something Judge said about white supremacy and he failed of confirmation by a single vote, as it is recalled. Judge Parker is a Republican, but a liberal one. Notwithstand ing his political affiliation, Demo crats wholeheartedly endorse him. When Mr. Roosevelt wanted two strong men for cabinet posi tions he named Knox and Stin son, and it is not believed he would turn Judge Parker down on purely partisan grounds. Overalls, overall jackets, duo gareee, work shirts, pants, breech es and one-piece work suits made of cotton fabrics can be sold a no higher prices now than those prevailing last March. This the 25th day of September, 1942 F. L. WILLIAMSON Clerk of General County Court Alamance County. W. D. Madry. Atty. WE HAVE KEPI FAITH! Our boys are fighting on the battle fronts of the world. Wherever our Army, Navy or Marine Corps go into action, Southerners are in the middle of the fight Here at home Southerners are carrying on in defense work of every description with the same enthusiasm our boys are showing on the fighting fronts. Every defense plant in the South has had to overcome tremendous prob lems in bringing their production to the record peak necessary to supply the ever-increasing demands of war. Here in the Atlantic Company we too are meeting the problems brought on by the war in the traditional South ern spirit Shortages of metal for bottle caps, restrictions on deliveries to conserve rubber and gasoline, shortage of man power due to enlistments of personnel in the Armed forces?and faced with unprecedented demand, we have in creased our production to the limit of our capacity without sacrificing quality one iota, in order to take care of the business that has formerly gone to competitors who have abandoned this market and are now devoting all their efforts to serving their own home com munities. Realizing that the demands of the wartime job create strain and tension which make all the more vital the need for a relaxing glass of good Ale or Beer occasionally, we pledge ourselves to make every effort humanly possible to insure both our customers and trade alike against any avoidable shortage of Good Old Atlantic Ale and Beer. ~ * V ? * /ATLANTIC AND GS??R i , 1 1 T AtUnttr Co Bnwhm la Atlaata.
