After seachlng far and near for a successor to Dr. F. P. Gaines retired president of Wake Forest College, Dr. Thurman Kitchen, dean of the school of medicine of that Institution, was unanimously chosen President at a meeting of the board of trustees of the college held here early In the week. Doctor Kitchen, a brother to former Governor W. W. Kitchen and former Congressman Claude Kltchtn, of the Second District, around whom a spirited controversy had waged for weeks was finally elected to the coi loge presidency by acclamation and is expected to make a great executive. During the fiscal year the State Highway Commission added 540 miles of new roads to the State system bringing the total to 8,962. July 29, the Commission will open bids on reven projects involving the construc tion of 61 miles of highway and two bridges at a cost of around $400,000. There are sixteen miles of bridges on the system, according to the Com mission, and 260 miles are within the corporate limits of towns.
