Wheat, oits and barley can be
grown during the winter months
and harvested (or grain in the
Spring and produce a substitute
tor our summer indian corn.
These crops when properly fertil
ized, Seeded wit/h good seed and
harvested will control erosion
during the winter months and can
be followed by Lespedeza in the
summer months for hay and will
produce approximately as much
feed as our best varieties of corn.
The average dlgestable nutri

cording to Morrison's "Feeds and
Feeding" are as follows based on
100 pounds:

Franklin County plants from
25,000 to 30,000 acres of corn
annually producing an average of
approximately 17 bushels an acre.
Our farms could be improved and
supply of grain Increased if one
third of your area was planted to
barley and oats to be substituted
for corn in feeding chickens,
cows, horses, mules and hogs and
followed by Lespedeza to be
plowed under to improve the soil
for corn the following year.

Tobacco marketing cards and i
cotton marketing cards have been
prepared and are ready to be de- .
livered to more than 99% of farm
operators in Franklin County.
We wish to invite them to call for
their marketing cards at earliest
convenience to avoid a last mln- 1
ute rush immediately prior to op-1
ening of tobacco markets in this I
vicinity and prior to the ginning |
of cotton. The marketing cards
issued are personal property of
the operators and extreme care
and precaution should be taken to
see that they are used only to
identify crops produced on Uhe
land covered by the Work Sheet
for which the card is issued. The
Agricultural Adjustment Act pro
vides severe penalties' for misuse
of marketing cards and the opera
tors to whom they are issued are
held responsible to see that they
are used properly.
The Cotton ginneri of Franklin
County are held responsible for
reporting each bale of cotton gin
ned. Farmers can render them a
greater assistance by properly
Identifying their cotton with tihelr
cotton marketing card at time of
ginning. When cotton Is proper
ly identified, correct credit! for
yield Is assured the farm.
