Vicksburg, a year a go, as had been falsely
charged, "that the time would come when the
soldiers that fought with Lee and Johnston
would occupy as proud a position in the
hearts of the American people as the sol
diers who fought with Grant and Sherman.

lips; no such thoughts as that ever entered my
heart. What he did say, speaking of that
war wasted, heartbroken people was, ''that
he trusted the- day would come when the
soldierly qualities and military genius of
Lee and Stonewall Jackson would be regard
