THE COURIER. GEORGE S, BAKER,. Editor ajoj PjtoritiETon. All letlcrs addressed ty Geo. S. Bakkr,- Friday.!... ... January, 15. 1875. A aXotlior oi Crimfiiulw. r ' 4 We find in the AVw York Tmes the following record of a Gunilyof crimi nals that lived' in oi.e of the counties on the Upper Hudson iiif New York, Says the Times : a Some severity yrars young gir naned "Margaret" was Jeft adrift in on of these villages 11 docs not ap ' pear whether through the TCriuie or. mis i fortune of others. There was no alms - house in the place.; - but the was a sub ject of out door relief, probably receiv- ing occasionally loud and clothing trom the officials, but never educated, and never kindly 'sheltered ii a homi. She became the mother of a long race of criminals ancLpaupf-rs, and her progeny m has cuiscd theCouj.ty ever giu'c?i The coiinty 'records jjhow two hundred of her decendants who have leen crimi nals. In one single : generation of her unhappy line there .were twenty chil dren of these, three died in infancy. and seventeen survived to maturity. Of the seventeen, nine served in the Stace Prisons for high crimes an agre gate term of fifty years, while the others were frequent mniatea of jails and peni tentiaries and aim-houses t f Of;thc 900 descendants, through six generations, from this unhappy girl who was left on the villagestreeta and aban L doncd in. her childhood, a great number have been idiots, - imbeciles, drunkards, lunatics, paupers r..acd prostitutes; but 200 of tlie more vigorous are on record as criminals. This neglected little child has thus cost the county authori ties, in the effects shu has transmitted, hundreds of thousands of dollars in the expense and care of criminals and pau pers, besides the untold damage she has ' indicted on property and public morals. When, wo think of the multitude -of wretched bciugs she has left upon, the earth ; of the suffering, degradation, ig norance, and crime that one child has" thus transmitted ; of the evil she has caused to thousand If innocent families and the loss, to the community, we carrj .all feebly appreciate the importance to the public of the care and education of a single pauper child We copy the following very sensible article, from the Roanoke Neus, ' we hope all will read! and . profit by it, particularly our felloW-.ntiens in Frank lin: n We blush to say toooftei neglect to ccs of information newspapers. ' v any of large families, in jt but our, people profit by such sour as are offered by very many, men- the State, live from year to year without eversecing anew japer and conserpidntly know nothing of what is going in ti ie outside on world. They do themselves and their children great injustice by ' failing to- Buhscribc for at least one good paper for nelt to a well-conducted school, the -newspaper ia the-most valuable medium of information. Ni)t. only culpable, in this respect, are thejpeople of 1 this State but .ehewhere there is similar neglect. Two hundred newspapers have suspen- j 'j Li A r. U- i v . J I ded in the past four weeks for want of adequate , support. It too otten hap pens that the field is crowded and the weaker, as a natural consequence, suc cumb, but those that struggle on fre quently live by dint of severe economy making their existence precarious at best,. This should not be, for few. if any, reading men there are who cannot afford to take one paper or -invest in good books. It is as surprising ,as it is mortifying to see how lit tie" some men know of what b going on outside their immediate circle, when they could so easily and at such little costkeep them pelves tjp with this progressive ae. Accordingly as a peojile advance in in telligence they imbrove in morals, and wholcsom ,rc.dbJ, Whet,, newsr: wise, serves to instruct and both thi Toumr and the ma- or otherwise enlighten both the young and the ma ture. Loving our State with all the devotion that pride and patriotism can father, we are ainoerely solicitous for her welfare and anxious that her people should advance snd improve in'everjf moral, social and intellectual virtue and with the humble means at our control we shall always i.trive to inculcate and enforce such doctrines as wej deem best calculated to lighten cur cares and exalt our natures. In conclusion let us con jure ever head of a family to place some good paprt, be it agricuJturaL ri- liiious, BtLentificL political or what not, in tiie reach ofjthcir cluldren. and., our word for it,M he good effpet will be as gratifying as it u startling v Mr. P. II. rnston Jr. Editor of the jUbeimarle Tiw5, in speaking of this County sajs: j THE CO C NTT OF FRANKLIN. TVVe is on beautlfti! reeuliarity about this ' county. Tie evening clouds are prettier! here, than any 1 erc elrV in America ?We ,have wa CU-.a, men nnu iae ueiguwMi loftiest; range of the AlleghanjV and Blue Ridge mounttins, 'seen their shadows fall upon the blue waters of the'oceau, but until a man. sees the aun p down behind the bills of r rank- liu county henever fullyrealizes, uow f erfectly and haniioniousiy the thou sand shades and coloia of clouds a .d sun can ' mingle, and blend into one vast panerama xf splendoriand lowli ness. Five years ago, within six nnles of'the point from which this letter is mailed, we saw such a sight as the eye of man on never again behold It was the total eclipse of he sun, fol lowed by a sunset which lit up both sky and earth whir a olaxe of golden glorr, Hills d-3 and rivulets, tree, flower and. rocks were bathed in a flood of living colors until they seemed t melt away in all glorious light. A ' thousand minature suns werw leaping over the glassy pebbles in the streamlets, or reflected upon the wild flowers of theferest No artist's pen cil though dipped in. sunlight, will ever" catch the inspiration of that hour ; it icn only live in the memory of Those who witnessed it. i 'I Am n t Afraid'.
