There is something inspiring and encouraginK in the dash and enterprise of the Lumberton folk in proceeding to build two mag nificent cotton mills at one time. .There is an example in it for other towns. May it be followed. There is sobriety in the steps of the Lumberton builders. We see the National Cotton Mill manage. ment has made Col. N. A. Mc Lean president. He is one of the most conservative of business men, is clear-headed always, even brilliant, as js known of all in Wese parts. Then there is the bracing of G. B. McLeod as vice president and A. P. McAllister as secretary-treasurer. The of ficials, including an experienced and successful superintendent, are all that could reasonably be desired. The Dresden Cotton Mill stock holders have elect ed the same officials was have run with such signal success the Lumberton Cotton Mill. There fore nothing more could be rea sonably desired for this mill also. The intelligent activity of the projectors and builders of these great plants warrant a full ex pectation cf success. Let other towns go and do likewise. They caiii point progress, foster pride and encourage endeavor. Thecbris tian world, with one great throb bing heart is made glad at the tidings of such forward marching and signal victories with which the address bristles. There are 5,000,000 Baptists, we are told, in America and 4,000,000 of them . .a 1 t are m tbe Boutn. Ana one naii these four millions are white, There are now 167 missionaries in the employ of the foreign board and over 700 in the employ of the home board. The contri butions to missions for the past year has been $315,000. Foreign mission work is going on in Ja pan, China, Mexico, Brazil, Ar gentine, Italy and Africa, under its management and support. There are 103 educational insti tutions under its control, 52 uni versities and 51 academies. The Theological Seminary at Louis ville, Ky., has an endowment of $550,000 and an attendance of 253 students. Its Sunday school board is doinc a business of $150,000 a year- REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. Be ea Every BoUk, The world is brightened by noble deeds. They are alas too infrequent. Everyone should be told. The story is ever read with relish. It rarely happens that the publication of one fails to do good. We have one of the best of the kind. Messrs. George, Alf and Sandy McLeod agree to found a scholarship at the South ern Presbyterian College at Red Springs in memory of their fath er, the late A. II. McLeod, Sr. This donation is worthy of all praise! In no way could these sons perpetuate the name of their lather more nobly. It links his name with the active forces of the Kingdom of Christ through fu ture ages. There is a sweet con sciousness one awakens in him self when he put something from his earthly goods into an estab lished Christian school, because it is his privilege to feel that he himself will be a recognized force throbbing with righteous energy in advancing the church of God after his voice is hushed and his body lies mouldering in the grave. riends of the college by the thousand will read this fine item of news gladly and also with hearts thankful to these gracious donors. ' The address of President E. W. Stevens at the opening of the 4th Annual Session of the South ern Baptist Convention in Chat tanooga, Teun., last Friday is notable one for the encourag ing statistics it presented in in genious array.
