VntAMrf . . iMMinitM. mittf r at the Pout .MceatLamberton, N. ., under the Act of Congress of March Ird, WW. FRIDAY. JUNE 8. iqo6. ANNOUNCEMENT. A little over a month ago I came to Lumberton to serve The Robesonian in the capacity of business manager. Since then I have devoted most of my time to that end of the paper- I ap preciate fully the kindly manner in which I was received in that relation. Beginning with this issue of the paper I assume the editorial management also. In assuming the duties I do not want to make any promises that can notbe carried out by an honest effort. But I shall try to get out a reliable paper that will give all the news of a public na ture as accurately and fairly as it is in my power to do. In or der to do this I will appreciate the assistance that so many friends of the paper can render by reporting news items to tm paper- I would like to corres pond with some one in every section of the county not already covered by crrespondents with a view to making such an arrange inent forjurnishing the news- The merchants of the county and elsewhere who have anything to sell will find that good results can be secured by a judicious use of the advertising columns of the paper- Also others who have some service to offer or ask of the public- The Robesonian has the largest circulation of any weekly paper in this section of the State for a fact, and I believe larger than any other paper else where in the State that is publish ed independent of a daily paper-Mr- Chas. A. Hines, who has done faithful service with the paper for sometime, resigned some weeks ago, his resignation taking effect, with the getting out of Tuesday's issue of the paper He left "Wednesday for his home at Greensboro, where, after a few weeks rest, he will begin work with The Patriot with which he has formed a connection. Mr. Hines made true friends here who regret to see him leave, but wish for him a continuance of sue cess in his new work. The Rob-1 esonian is among these friends. P. A. Bryant By reference to the proceed ings of the county commission ers, a report of which is given elsewhere in the paper today, it will be seen that the action of the board at a recent meeting in hi ring out the county convicts to the Cottingham Lumber . Co. was ratified and confirmed by the board. Two members of. the board voted for it and one against it. The fourth member, Mr. Barnes, was not present- This is a matter in which the citizens of the county in general are in terested and a matter which has had some discussion in cards al ready published in The Robe sonian. We take it that the com missioners have acted in a man ner that they believe will best serve the interest of the county under existing circumstances. If there were any tax payers who were apprehensive that the tax levy would be increased they can breathe easy now as the com missioners made no change in the levy. Every $100 worth of real - and personal property is assessed 63 cents for State, pensions, pub lie schools and county purposes. The poll tax is $1.29 for State and 60 cents for county purposes There is also a tax of 25 cents on $100 worth of real and personal property and 75 cents, on the poll for the construction and repair ing of public roads. The receipts pt the Lumberton postofliee for the month of May were $(553, as compared with $378.75 for the month of April. An increase of $274.25 is a con siderable pick up in business but it is not surprising to those that are familiar with the steady pro gress that the town is making in every way. When the two new cotton mills are in operation, the prosperity will lie still more in evidence. In the death of Senator Arthur Puc Gorman, a great character has passed from active life. His services were valuable to his State and nation. For 18 years he was a prominent llgure in the National Congress and during that time he was a leader. MR. D. P. SHAW FOR CLERK. Rumored that be Is Urged to Make the Race "More-Anon-Voter" Writes of His Fitness for the Place. Editor Robesonian: I have heard it rumored that Mr. D. P. Shaw is being urged by some of his friends to offer himself as a candidate for the office of clerk of the court of Robeson county- If the people of Robeson sec lit to give to us a new clerk, I'm sure they would make no mistake in selecting Mr. Shaw for this place Mr. Shaw comes from that long line of Scotch descent who have ever played an important part in the uplifting of the inter est of our jpountry, both Church and State. There are few equals and no superiors to his father, Hon. A. L. Shaw, while Mr. D P. Shaw himself possesses those notable traits of character which make up a strong and useful man hood, as is proven from the fact that Mr. Shaw has already made for himself a reputation as an able jurist and a wise expounder of the law. To select Mr. Shaw for this place would be only following the prestige of the past history of Democracy: To select those who are best qualified for the various offices. I desire to say that in writing this little article that I have no personal axe to grind nor am I writing this as against any oth ers whose aspirations may run this way, but I simply write this because I know that if Mr. Shaw would become a candidate, Rob eson hasn't a more worthy or more capable son upon whom she could throw the responsibilities of this important trust and gift of the people than is Mr. Shaw, and I feel that I voice the sentiments not only of one locality, but of a number of the people of Rob eson county when I suggest to them the name of D. P. Shaw, whose past record is a sufficient guarantee of what the future holds in store for him and of his honest and upright purpose to do his best in whatever vocation of life he may be placed. Correipondenc The- RobetonLin: r Rowland, N. C, June 4. The social event of the week was the marriage of Miss Lena McCor mick and Dr. Livingston F. John son, of Dillon, S. C, at the Meth odist church, Wednesday, 5:30 p. m., Rev. J. W. Bradley, off! dating. This wedding, that only lacked a few houra of being a June affair, has been looked for ward to with great interest and, consequently, the church was filled a few moments after the doors, were opened The procession was led by the ushers, Messrs. B. A. Edens, C. D. Smith and E M. Liles, of Dil Ion, and A. C. Sinclair, Jr., who came singly down either aisle, crossing beneath the canopy of roses and trailing cedar where the ceremony was performed They were followed by the brides maids, Miss Delilah Hamer, of Clio, S- C, and Miss Lillian Smith, and the grooms-men, Mr A. D. McKenzie and Mr. Geo. R. Ward and the ring girl, little Miss Beulah Williams Then came the bride and maid of honor, her sister, Miss Bessie McCormick, down the East aisle, and the groom and his best man, Mr- R- W- Herring, of Wilming ton, from the west door- They met beneath the canopy of roses before the altar, the attendants having formed a semi-circle on either side- The ring ceremony was used; after which, the happy couple left the church by the west door, followed by the at tendants and ushers in pairs The church was handsomely decorated, the color scheme of green and white being effectively carried out- Palms, ferns and grasses were largely used-v Miss Hallie Lytch presided at the organ, and played the wed ding march. During the cere mony she rendered a beautiful "Melody in P," and as a prelude, she played "Narcissus-" The bride wore a beautiful gown of white radium silk with pearl trimming and carried bride's roses- The veil was of tulle and of exquisite design The maid of honor was gowned in white China silk with chiffon trimming and carried carnations The brides-maids wore white China silk made over blue, and the groom and grooms-men were in conventional attire- And the ring girl was a little dream, daint ily clad in white silk- The bride, who is both popular and pretty, is the eldest daughter of Mr- II- K. McCormick. The groom is a prominent young phy sician of Dillon- Showered with rice and con gratulations, they left immedi ately after the ceremony for a visit to the groom's relatives- How's This?
