Wishart,of Wilming ton, Del., has been visiting rela tives here this week. Mr. J. L- Smith, after visiting here, returned Wednesday to his home in Cumberland county. Mr. Steve Humphrey, of Plor ida, is visiting his father, Mr Lewis Humphrey, at Saddle Tree. lotte, spent Wednesday in Lum berton on professional business. Mrs. Daniel Shaw returned home Tuesday after a visit to her parents.Mr. and Mrs. G.M.Whit field. Messrs. Jno. M Brown and N. B- McArthur, of Red Springs, were Lumberton visitors this week. Miss Lena Jordan, of Red Springs, is visiting her sister, Mrs . C- M. Weatherly, at Mar ion, S. C Miss Lisette Wade.of Wilming ton, arrived yesterday after noon to visit her cousin, Miss Whitfield. Messrs- 0. L Smith and Z. Vi Moore, of Charlotte, were among the traveling fraternity in Lum berton this week. Messrs. V. G. Pleasants, R. S. Bond and L B. Hedgepeth, of Rowland.were among the visitors in town this week. Mrs. D. Edward Oliver, of Ly ons, Ga-, and Miss Catherine Atkinson, of Marietta, arevisiting at Mr. J. T. Singletary's. Mr. D. D. French suffered a sudden attack of illness Tuesday nighj, and was quite sick for sev eral hours. His condition is de cidedly improved. Mr- A- A. James, of Laurin- burg, was here Wednesday to attend a meeting of the stock holders of the Lumberton Cotton Oil and Ginning Co. Mrs V. C Hammond, of Ashe boro, and little son returned home Wednesday after a visit to Mrs. Hammond's parents, Mr and Mrs. G M Whitfield. - The annual meeting of the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias mm j neiu in vj reensooro next week, beginning Tuesday night. Several Pythians will attend from Lumberton. The fare for the round trip on the excursion to Wilmington from Lumberton will be $1-25. The fare from Maxton will be $1.50. Special cars will be provided for ladies and their escorts. . Messrs. G. A. McKay, Jas. McKay, Jno. A. Humphrey, J. B. Humphrey, W. J.Humphiey and J.T. Tolar were part of a delega tion from Red Springs who here here this week on business. Miss Mary Davis, stenogra pher for MessVs- Mclntyre and Lawrence, -left Wednasday-for Raleigh, her home, to be present at the marriage of her sister to Mr- Robert H- Dye, a prominent lawyer of Fayetteville. The inar riage will be next Tuesday Rev. G- T. Pace, principal of Philadelphus High School, was on our streets this week. Mr. Pace has given to this commu nity one of the best high schools in the county Mr. Powell, who married Miss Nicie Bridger, of Bladenboro, died Monday at his home at Hen derson. His remains were in terred Tuesday at Bladenboro Mr. and Mrs. Powell have ac qqaintances here who will regret to hear of his death- Among those who attended Trinity Park High School at Dur ham from Robeson county the past session and who have come homo to spend their summer va cation, are Messrs. John C. Ful ler and David Fuller, of Lum be r ton, and B. II- Stansel and T. B. Stansel, of Allenton- Mr. Frank Gough will have charge of the excursion that will be run over the Seaboard from Wadesboro to Wilmington Satur day. The train is due to pass Lumberton about 8:20 o'clock that morning- A large crowd will doubtless go as very few excur sions will be operated this year The Rowland Manufacturing Co., of Rowland, has been char tered. The capital stock is $20, 000 authorized and $9,000 paid in The company will manufacture lumber. The incorporators are Messrs. W. F. Bristow, A. W. Walker, V. G. Pleasants, A. Bar ker, J. W.McKay andLZ.Hedge-pe'th- The Laurinburg Dramatic Co. will present"Under the Southern Cross" at the opera house here Friday evening of next week. The entertainment will be given for the benefit of the Daughters of the Confederacy. Special scenery, special costumes and special music will be used. Seats on sale at usual places. Mr. C. A. Parnell lost several line hogs Tuesday. They were fed Monday night and nothing appeared wrong with them. Tuesday morning he found six dead in the pasture. Another died during the day and still others were sick. He supposes that they were poisoned and says if another attempt is made along that linethe guilty party will be in danger of being caught as he expects to have him tried with the bloodhounds. Evander Godwin, who was em ployed as brakeman on the Atlan tic Coast Line, has entered suit through his attorneys to recover $40,000 damages which he alleges is due him for injures sustained while in the employ of the com pany. The accident took place at Dillon, S.C.While Godwin was coupling cars. In some manner one of his feet was cut off. Among his attorneys are Messrs. Wishart & Shaw, of the Lumber ton bar. STATE NEWS. The First National Bank of Tarboro has been organized, capi talized. at $50,000. The next meeting of the State Building and Loan League will be held in Greensboro. The Bell Telephone Co- has entered into an associate contract with the Wadesboro Telephone Co. The Clarkton Hotel Co., at ClarkUm, Bladen county, with $25,000 authorized capital has been chartered. O. L Clark and others are stockholders. C. J. Harris, of Dills boro, au thorizes the announcement that he will be a candidate before the State Republican Convention for Chairman of the State Executive Committee. Wm. Bohannon, a Yadkin coun ty farmer, aged 40 years, com mitted suicide Wednesday by hanging himself in his barn with a plow line. Financial and family troubles was the cause Mr. John Maffit Wright, aged 37 years, died Tuesday morning at his home in Wilmington as a result of blood poison, produced by a slight cut on the hand a week ago by a copper nail. The narnett County Democrat ic Convention Monday endorsed II. L. Godwin for Congress; F. M. Simmons for the Senate; Franklin McNeill for corporation commissioner, and Armistead Jones for solicitor. Miss Neppie C. Borden, of Wil mington, and Mr. J. A. Cannon, of Concord, were mar ried at G race Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilmington Tuesday afternoon. Both the contracting parties are prominent and well-known. The Southern States Immigra tion Commission, which includes among its members representa tives appointed by the Governors of seven Southern States, met in New York Monday and organized.
