The third quarterly meeting of the Salisbury Spenoer Baraca Un ion, which was to have been held Sunday afternoon, was postponed until next Sunday owing tj the funeral of M. 0. Tne crowd was given a oar ride over th city and out to the fair grounds where an enjoya ble time was bad. Dr. G. M. Van Poole and wife, who had been visiting relatives in the county for several weeks, re turned to Fort Washington, Md., 8nnday. Miss Mary Gordan who has been at theWhitehead-Stokea SaL atotiuiu for about six weeks and underwent an operation, has suffi ciently recovered to return home. J. W. Webb, city engineer, who underwent an operation at the Whitshead-Stokes sanatorium te oentiy, is rapidly improving. The Rowan Medical Sooiety is holding itc regular quarterly ses sion in the oity hall here to-day. Dr. C M. Van Poole, the presi dent, is presiding. Drs. J. M. Neel, Robt. L. Ram say and W. O. Daniel, three of Salisbury's splendid dentists at tended the State Dental Sooiety's meeting in Raleigh last week. Dr. Ramiay demonstrated the practi cability of a "Porcelain Crown for a Live Tooth." Rev. R. A. Goodman, now con nected with the Collegiate In stitute at Mt. Pleasant paid a visit to Salisbury and Speneer last week. Rev. Goodman has many friends about here who were glad to see him. The dwelling of West Brooks, colored, situated on the eastern suburbs of EaBt Spenoer, was to tally destroyed by fire Friday evening. The building was not of much value, but the loss falls heavy upon its owner . Rev. M M. Kinard, D. D., pas tor of St. John's E. L. church, who has been recuperating at Hiddenite for several weeks, has returned to his flook and preached at the usual hours Sunday. The Methodist District Confer ence Committee is busy making arrangements for the meeting to he held in Spenoer July 24th to 26th inolusive. - Quite a number of delegates will be present and an in teresting program will be carried out. The Spencer and Kannapolis ball teams are busy trying to make a score on the Spenoer dia mond this evening. These are strong teams and an interesting game is being played. The Salisbury Council United Commercial travelers will hold a picnic at the fair grounds Satur day evening. H. A. BoBtian, ot China Grove, was in town this morning. A. B. Brown assistant register of deed, who was recently knock ed down by an automobile and re ceiving a bad I raotureof the shoul der bone, is able to be out on the street, but is not yet able to re unae his duties. The three defeated county commissioners held a meet ing Monday and proceeded to open bids and give a con tract for the erection of a court house contrary to the of the county, a piece of the most contemptable spite work ever ' known to have been committeed in the official his tory of the county. There is said to have been nine bidders and the figures ranged from $111,100 to $129, 323, the contract being given to the Kinar Lumber Co., of Charlottsville. Va.. at the formfer Drice. Just what it cost the King Company to land the job is not stated. The building is to be com pleted within a year during which time it is to be hoped means will be found to make the contractor wish he had never neara oi nowan County, and particularly the trio of defeated candidates handing ont contracts. A contract to supply the building with steel furniture, vaults, etc., is said to have been given to the General Fire Proof Co., of Youngs town, O., for $4527.50. This part of the affair will clearly come within the discretion of the next board. What it cost this firm to land the job is not stated . John Wannamaker, of Philadelphia, is said to have been given a contract f or the furniture, benches, etc., at a cost of $2,608, The amount of the rake off is not stated. This will also come within the say so of the next board. This makes a total of $118," 225.50, already more than the amount borrowed. It will probably go over this before completed. Litbtni Sundu School Workers will Meet lo Hickory. North Carolina Lutheran Sunday School workers are preparing for their annua summer institute. These as semblies have been please ant and profitable occasions, the one to be held this year promises to be no exception to the rule. It will be held at Lenoir College, Hickory, N. O 'Ruf ty will regret to learn of his death whioh took place at his home in this oity about 1:80 o'clock Friday morning. Mr. Rufty has been afflicted with heart disease for some tima, but was able to at tend to his business, iha dis ease however, seemed to be per sistent and, although Mr. Rufty used all reasonable precautons to protect himself, it proved fatal after an attack of about one hour with skillful medical attentions to the contrary. Mr. Rufty was married twice and by his first wife was the father of two sons, I. E. Rufty. connected with the Y. M. C. A. work in Charlotte, and Hilton Rufty, of Richmond, who, with his second wife, survive, lbe funeral was held from the Metho dist Churoh Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. C. Rowe, D. Calvin Ruf ty. of Statesville. a cousin, was visiting him and they drove over the oity Friday. Engineer Thomas E. Beach, who was killed in a railroad wreok, near Greensboro Saturday, was well known in Salisbury and Spencer. Mr. Beach had been on the road for 40 odd years and was telling it ou the streets of Salis bury during the week that he had never been in a wreck. Saturday, however, he was in one and it was his first and last He was in charge of passenger train N. 36, ran into an open switch, jumped, struck his head against the cross tie, crushed his skull and died from the effeots. His engine bur ied itself in a freight engine stand iog on a side traok. Qaite a number of passengers were injur ed and shaken up, but Mr. Beasb was the only fatility. After a week's confinement to his room L. T. Dudly, the South ern's operator at Spencer, died He has been afflioted for some time but stnek to his duties to last. ZEILIN CO., Miss Myrtle Caable, of Sumner, daughter of Mrs Monroe' Cauble of the St. Paul neighborhood, this county, and James Wilson, an op erator who resides near Wilming ton, were married in Charlotte Sunday erenig. Miss Cauble re cently spent : several months in Charlotte attending a business oollege where she met Mr. Wilson. Miss Csuble went to Charlotte Sunday morning where a meeting had been arranged for and the marrage followed. They left for Mr. Wilson's home. A surprise marriage took place here yesterday morning. Miss Clarice Poff, 'of Roanoke, Va., and Charles Gray, of Gastonia. were the contracting parties and Rev. W. H. Hardin was the offi ciating minister. Miss : Poff had been visiting sisters of the groom and when she left Mr. Gray accompanied her thus far and arranged for an immediate mar riage. Orasifc Teapirtnee Bill Pissts Georgia Hoise. Atlanta, July 10. The Alexander substitute for the the Tippins liquor bill, con. taining provisions tightening those of the original measure, passed the House today after several days of fighting. The vote was passed 129 to 42. This vote, if held, is sufficient to repass the bill over the Governor's wish, if he vetoes it, The House also voted down an amendment providing the reference of the measure to a vote of the people. $ The Alexander ppins bill is especially drastic toward locker vclubs and provides ways by which the Governor practically controls them and carries provisions for prose cution for perjury if the of ficials of such clubs swear to falsehoods in testifying. The bill is yet to go to the Senate. Paul the fifteen-year old son of Mr. aud Mrs. J. J. Correll, who has been ill for two weeks, died this evening. The funeral will be held from the home to-morrow evening and the remains will be taken to Wilson for interment. MARRIAGES for nearly half a century.
