THE DAILY JOURNAL. wilmingtok jr. a ll-i TUESDAY, BETTEMBER 17, 1867. JEFF. TUOilPSOX'S LETTER. BosToii, Mass., Sept 3d, 18C7. . To the Ojjkert and Soldiers who were , ,, " under my command durinq 0m late tear. Gentlemen: I have received various let ten from among you, asking what I mean by my letter to Air. Trentico of the Louis ville Journal, endorsing General Long street, and what advice I have to offer yon as to your political course. I have delayed answering these letters in hopes that I ! would soon return to ' Ijsw Orleans, but, finding that I cannot return for several weeks, and other letters 'having cbmqf that will brook no delayfc.I hay, de(ernned tq address you a circular, that I may be bo longer misrepresented and misunderstood among those who. were my .true friends in our darkest hours' and with whom I have shared so many hardships and dangen, successes and defeats. v - One of the letters received contains the g'mt of all, and I will answer it it says 'Long&treet ia forever damned throughout the country which became the theatre of his immortality,' and y oar old friends are not reserved in their anathemas against you. Give me some argument with which to defend you, for I am too well acquaint ed with the spirit which animated yon in our disastrous straggle, with your cheerful endurance of suffering and your persistent fealty to the last, to believe that yon hare abandoned your devoted followers, or have relinquished the principles or memories Of the post" .. For God's sake what has Longstreet done to damn him ? forwhatam I anathematised? from what do I need defence? The war produced no purer or braver man than Gen eral James Longstreet, and surely from the first to the last I have proved myBeif to be faithful and true, and I defy any man to point to one word or sentence in my letter 3 s ifilfl O a err1 . SI p p q . ; a aw- tr IlM to Mr. Prentice that breathes a want of lovavTederal ' government. for our people, or to a fact stated that can' not be substantiated. I - am aware ' that some scribblers have assailed me. but "they belong to the Tray, Blanch, and Sweet heart order, who simolv obev thlnabEncfa of their own natures, by .barking- at what they do not understand," but I am loath to bebeve that any tried . soldier will doubt another's honesty because he may differ -with him in the plans to accomplish the general good, and I have ! an abiding faith that they will let any comrade have . the privilege to exercise his own judgment as the best manner to bmid up the country. without "being anathematised, and I." who was a leader in the beginning and a fol lower at the end, and who, during. the whole struggle, was with yon at the front, or a prisoner of war, will positively assert and manfully maintain my right to express my opinions freely, upon all subjects -af fee ting the welfare of the South, to and among Southrons, without fear or favor from chimerical theorists or bomb-proo: politicians. If the war was to defend tho South in the exercise of ita "belief of the riaht to se cede, then I do not rcgretthe fight', thoukh I may have to grieve over the death of this theory. II the war was to preserve African fiiavery, then 1 do not ' regret the struggle though I do grieve over the loss of four thousand miuirs of dollars worth ofrrou crty, and the si 1 fata that Awaits tie , root ncKro, but if we fought four-years simply . for the personal triumph of some, political portizacs, a few of ' whomwould still make us believe that the country is ruined only because they are excluded from ofSoe, then J sincerely rores tho conZicL and will grieve anew over the craves of the brave men who fell around me.. Tell them to remember that political Qlo oriet like sectarian (religious) theories, are principles only in the minds of the bigoted and foolish, and demagogues are only too apt to misapply, these terms to mislead them. Constitutions and Laws are subject to changes, by legal means and by revolu tions, and when changed are to be obeyed; and if the lesson sad experience teaches are not heeded, then are people , unfit for self-government, and the sod fate of Re publican Mexico will be oar lot; jThe ex tent of the ltrdits to State rights as argued by Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Ham ilton and the right to own slaves, were sub mitted to tne arbitrament of the sword, and in my opinion they.were decided, both A V . 'II against us, anu nenner our nonor, nor oar interests require farther contest for them. 1 can remember, but too well, the years of excitement and injury to the country from the conflict on thee theories in Kan sas, ana our late war, with its stricken fields, its bloody graves, the ruin and deso- ation which followed in its track, is as in- dellibly fixed in tn memory, aa in any man's in the whole South ; and while re membering the dread past, I must receive ta lessons, and not quarrel over dead theo ries; bat look to the livt issues of the pres ent and future ; for (though I may bo dis franchised,) it is still my duty to help re store tranquility, and build up the broken prosperity ox tne country, for the widows and orphans, my soldiers and my children's sakes, and on all practical questions affect ing the material interests, such as Banks, land, Taxes, Suffrage, Internal Improve ments and Revenues, I will be found as true, to the South as I was in her stormiest noun, . . 4-.vt .j . -;vi.i j AU now agree: that, by riaht or revolu tion: our States were out out of the Federal Union and our. Government was a de facto Government, therefore if our Conquerors imnK mat saiery or justice requires that the conditions' opoxr which-these States may be re-admitted into the Union, shall be that our leaders in the field and promi nent statesmen, must be denied - the rurbt Vj voie orioia ouice, also tnat political equality must be extended' td the negro ; though we may know this to be grievously ? -1- i . . . . . . . misui&ea BiateamanBiup, yet we must ao cepc inese lerms or ao worse, lor we can not 'stay put or. stop the march of events, as the power is still in the hands of our pol itical . enemtes. A few yean will . demon strate the wisdom or fallacy of their theo ries,, and daring this probation we should work to build up our broken fortunes, and prove ourselves worthy of confidence there- ore I advise you not to mope over the pasL but 'remember our "Lost Cause" only as the widowed husband remembers bis bride when he looks upon his mother- ess children, accept all political pnvileees that may be granted you, and then without being actuated .by batred or revenge (neith er of which are soldierly sentiments) strive maniuuy lor ine true interests or your State and country, by working to develop her resources and increase her wealth. Should you differ with othert as the best plan to accomplish these objects, still be mends and coiaborera intone Common Cause which now should be, as it once was. tie greatness and glory of the whole United bUtea. ; This is what I told yon at oar sur render at Jocksonport in June 18C5, this is the substance of my letter to Mr. Pren tice; and Ifchrge it upon you,; now, and if xor ( inis J. am to be anathematised let tne dogs bark until time Bhall prove that Thave !
