"On 'the -(21th; 25th nnd 2Cth exprrienccd lieavy southwest and westerly gales, which brought the sliip down to 118 miles a- day. Ou the Slat of March the Engineer's report showed only about 127 tons of coal on board. We wen then 460 miles east of Bandy Hook, with wind southwest, and high westerly swells and falling barometer; hip steaming only 8 knots per hour, I considered the risk too great to push on, at we might find ourselves, in the. vent sf a gale, shut out from any port of supply, and so decided to bear up for. Halifax.'.! W T p. To., the 81st, Sambro Island was distant 170jniles; the ship's ipeed varying from 8 to 12 knots per hour, wind south with rain; which veered to westward at 8 p. m. with ! cleat weather; at midnight I judged the ship to have made 122 miles, which would place her 48 miles soutkxif Sambro Island, and I then west into tho .chart room, , leaving orders about the lookout, and to let me know , if they ..saw anything, and call me at 3 aa. intending then to put the slup'a head to southward and wait daylight My first intimation of the catastrophe was the striking of tho tHu ou Mam' jCilaniL and! renxainioff thore fast. The tea immediately swept away all the port boats. The officers went to their stations and commeaed clearing away : the boats. Rockets were fired by the teoond officer. Before the boats could be cleared, only (ten minutes hsvipg elapsed, the ship keeled heavily to port, rendering the starboard boats useless. Seeing that S) help could be gotten from the boats, I got the passengers into the rigging, and outside the rail, and mi eouraged them to go forward, whers the ship was higher and leas exposed to the water.' The third officer, Mr. Bradr, Quartermaster Oweas and the ueak Man, by this time, 'had estab lished ounuatuiicaliou , with an out lying rock, about 40 yards distant, and by means of hoc, got four other hues to the rock, along which about two hundrod people passed. LYtweea the rock and the shore there was s passage about oua hundred yards wide; S rope waa suctwsafully passed across this, by which about fifty reached tho main land, though many were d rowed in the attempt At 5 a. u., the first boat appeared from the Island, but the was too unalV to b of any assistance. Through ' 4ne exertions of 'Mr. Brady the Islanders wrra aroused, ami by ft A. M, three'larger bo its came to our asaistauce. By their efforts all that remained on the aids of the ship a id oaths rock were landed in safety and cared for by a poor fisherman and daughter named Clancy. During the day tho turrivora, to the number of four hundred and twenty-nine, were drafted; off to private houses scattered ahont, the resident msgietrate, Es mond Rymer, rendering valuable a aistanoe. . The chief ' officer having got np the mixien rigging, the tea cut off his retreat and be stood for six hours by a woman who had been placed in the rigging.- The tea was too high to attempt hit rescue. At 8 o'clock P. M. a clergyman, Bev. Mr, Aucieut, succeeded in getting him a line and getting him off. Many of the passengers, steerage and saloon, died in the rigging from cold, among the number tho parser of the ship. . Be fore the hosts went out I placed two bodies iu th lifo-boet, but finding the boat useless, I oarried them .to the 'gS'8'. 'hen I left athem, and , went off to encsursgs others to go forward on the sldo of the ship. At this juncture the boilers exploded and the boat rolled over to the leeward. The ahip at this time being on her beam tul, and finding mttslf nseless th'-ro, I went to take the ladies forward, but found them gone, nor did I sea them afterward. Many paaseugers at this time eould not be stimulated to any ef fort to aare themselves, but lay iu the rigging and died from fright and expo sure. I remained on the aide encour aging, helping and directing', until fif teen were landed, when finding that my hands snd legs were becoming useless, I left the ship, two other boats being close to, and embarked the remainder. On reaching shore I dispatched Mr. Brady, the third officer, off to Half ax, across tho country, to telegraph the news of the disaster aud to obtaiu t sistancc. Mr. Morrow, the Cunard line agent, promptly responded aud immediately aent two steamers (with a Supply of provisions) to convey the survivors to Halifax, where they will be cared for aud forwarded to New York the first opportunity, in eharge of the first and fourth offioera, the third offi cer and four men being left at the Is hmd to ears fof Uut dead, and aa they came ashore.
