Ia a recently paUished letter he shows that the annual deficiency ia the crop of corn in the South, which has in past years averaged about 60,000,000 bush els, ia rapidly increasing, and that if the people of the bo nth follow the mistaken policy of trying to be inde pendent of the West by raising their own corn at the expense of a large portion of their prod act of cotton, they will hare to pay $50,000,000 per annnnt and upward for the prmlege. Governor Smith shows tint to supply the annual deficiency of 60,000,000 btuthela of corn would require the cul tivation of 6,000,000 acres. The same acreage devoted to cotton culture would produce 1,230,000 bale Fix lug the price of cotton at 13 cents per pound, and oorn at one dollar per bnahtd, the loss to the South would be 150.000,000 annually. We present the above as the "cotton side" of the question and without In tending to endorse its correctness. Every farmer ought to "raise corn enough to do him," at least, until we get cheaper and more abundant trans portation to the grain growing region of the Northwest. DIM. RTEriiKna ox tub loii I4XIA Ot'THAOE. Under his well known initials, we find the following announcement of what Mr. Stephens proposes to do when he takes his seat in the next Federal CuoRresa. lie aaya in hia paper, the Athuita Nun t "If it be true that the duly elected Governor of Louisiana has btwn dis placed by the judicial usurpation of drunken Federal Judge, then that Judge will mnetcertaiulv iMtimpeaehed or articles of impeachment will be moat enrtiunly brought against him, it Mr. Htephens is ever able to take his seat in the House of Representatives. This is Mr. Htephens' Jefformmian, Demo cratic, peaneful way ef trssting uaur- patious of this sort ! and Dot by In citing even the wronged and oppressed to resort to arms as the best mode of redress," , A. H. 8. We trust that this assurance from the great Georgian will entirely satisfy and reuMure the people of Louisiana, who have so long been laboring under the impression that thoir dear est rights of person and property have been wantonly outraged, and that they will govern themselves ac cordingly. We very much fear, however, that onr Louisiana friends will not be able to take the calm, dispassionate view of the matter that Mr. Stephens takes, and possibly, for the reason, among others, that they have not the high opinion of the in tegrity, honesty and sagacity, personal and political, of President Grant that Mr. Stephens entertaina. Possibly, too, those nea who have b(Hn subjected to fine, imprisonment and taxation without warrant of law, and whose property, liberties and lives are still in Jeopardy every Lour, Uisy not be willing to rik their all upon the hesard of the dio of Mr. Stephens' if". They may thiuk that is an inse C ire protection, that depends, first upon Mr. fc Cohens' opinion that President Grout has acted in defiance of law, and secondly, upou Ute contingency of his taking his scat I Possibly too, even though they may be satisfied that Mr. Stephens will de cide in favor of the McEncry Govern ment, and that he will take his seat, they may think that is an insecure relief , that depends upon the action of a Radical Mouse of Representative, and a Radical Senate, as the remedy by impeachment of Judge Durell will de pend. f , Possibly too, our Louisiana friends may think the impeachment and oust ing from office of a drunken Federal Judge, will hardly meet the exigency of the case where men usurp the pow ers of their State Government. They may think, too, that the removal of drunken Judge Durell will not accom plish much, so long as President Grant has power to nominate hia (accessor. We very much fear that the good people of Louisiana are not in a frame of mind to take much comfort from Mr. Stephens' announcement, or the lofty tone of it The great Georgian talks aa he would doubtless have talked before the war. He seems to have forgotten who he is and when and where he lives. He seems to have tot gotten, also, what the American Congress is. Without intending to be disrespect ful to a man venerable for age, talent and for long publio service, we cannot refrain,, as doubtless the people of Louisiana will not, from contrasting the estimate Mr. Stephens seems to place trpoa the value of his presence ' la th American Congress, with the estimate hia oolleague andthepublk generally will place thereon. The dif ference is so great that th idea prescaU almost ludicrous aspects.
