We have received a postal card from Magnolia, S. C, which states that a man answering to the description of the mur derer of Lanier, at Dudley, a few days ago, had been arrested at that place and lodged in the guard house on the suspi cion that he committed the murder. He refuses to give references, but says that he has had a half dozen different names. Be also says that he came from near GokUboro, in.this State, but refuses to tell witS whom he has liyed or upon whose plantation he has worked all of which proves that he is a suspicious character, whether he is the one wanted or not. The arrest was caused by one of our sub scribers, Mr. J. H. Johnson, of Magnolia, who writes to u the facts. He says that the man claims at present the name ol Frank Collins and that he corresponds, in nr nr lip" trht and weieht. with the ! dis- ww t -" " m 0 w cription published of him. Accident to the Kegulater. The steamship Eegulator, in m.king her regular trip fiom New YorkJ to this port, after crossing the Main Bar, at the mouth of the river yesterday, struck a piece of an old wreck which is supposed to be that of a blockade j runner, causing the steamer to come to a sudden stop, which threw the rudde- out of gear and slued the ship around on the shore. At the first sheck the Captain thought the engines had broken down, but upon in quiry the surmise was soen found to be ucorrect, and the trae cause of the acci dent ascertained. A small bole was knocked in the bottom and what is term iod as the shoo on the keel, wmcn is a niece of iron leading frem the propeller to about midships, knocked off. The bole was made abeut midships, but the pumps kept her clear and it is thought that very little if any damago has been done to the cargo. The U. S. dredgeboat pulled the steamer off and the steam-tug Alpha towed her up to the city this morning. The full extent of the damage to the ahiD cannot be ascertained, however, un til the cargo is all discharged. For all of which information we are indebted to the courteoub Superintendent of the line, Mr. Thomas E. Bond. Honored and Blessed. When a board of eminent physicians and chemisU announced the" discovery that by combining some well-known val uable remedies, the most wonderful med iciue was produced, which; would cure such a wide range of disease that most all other remedies could be dispensed with many were ecepticalj but proof of its mer its by actual trial has dispelled all doubt and to-day the discoverers of that great Medicine, Hop Bitters, are j honored and blessed by a!l aa benefactors . I Sale or Express Packages. 1 The sale of packages of unclaimed freight remaining at the Express Office in this city, was made this morning by Messrs Cronly & Morr's, Auctioneers nailer instructions from Mr. Allen, the agent here. They sold well but for hardly enough, it is thought, to pay the freight due on them. The Rainfall. The amount of rain which has fallen thus far during this month., as we learn frsm the Signal Office in this city, has amounted to but 19-100 ef an inch, while during the month of July, 1878, it was S and 11-100 inches. There are yet eight days in which to make up the amount to that which stands to last year's credit, and we would be glad to take it all in one dose tonight. The Noonday Prayer Meeting. We learn that the prayer meeting this noon, held at the Seamen's Bethel, notice of which we gave yesterday, was net largely attended. Devotional exercises however, were held for the purpose for which the meeting was called, and the Throne of Grace was earnestly implored for rain to refresh the parched earth. The meetings will be continued until further notice. Colored Sunday School Convention. We learn that a Sunday School Con vention of the A. M E. Church of this State will be held at Newbern on Tues day, the 29th inst. All persons connected with that Church and all who feel an in terest in the colored Sunday Schools are respectfully invited to be present, and participate in the deliberations. Arrange ments have been made with the railroads to convey passengers to the Convention from this city and return at $8 for the round trip and children at half price. A False Alarm. The British barquentine Jduma is reported in below with sickness on board, one ot the crew having died oa the pas sage, in consequence of whioh rumors have been rife upon the streets to-day that a vessel with yellow fever jon board had put in below and was detained at the quarantine station. The facts ef the case are simply these, as we have learned them from a reliable source : The vessel, is as above stated. the British barquentine Indiana, from the West coast of Africa, where she has, be en 1 trading. Unfortunately,! however, the crew caught what ia known as the African fever, which is a virulent type of malarial fever and nothing more. One of the crew! has died and two others are now sick in the hospital, opposite the regular quarantine station near Smithville. The vessel has been quarantiued by the Quar antine Physician, Dr. Curtis, who has telegraphed to this city from Smithville that there is no cause whatever for any apprehension en the part of our citizens. Man's Inhumanity. Last evening a colored individual, one of the innumerable army of hucksters in this city, was driving his poor little ox along through the heavy sand on McRae etroet, when the patient beait of burden, tired and famished , gave out and could go no further, whereupon the man gave him a most unmerciful beating. The animal then dropped in the street, lowing pitoously, but the driver continued to beat him . A number of ladie3 witnessed the scene from various bouses in the neighborhood, and some ef them came out to their gates and plead with the fellow to be merciful to the beast, but he would not heed them; whereupon they one and all vowed that they .would never again buy a cent's worth from him as long as they lived, (a vew they are determined Bhill not be broken The owner of the animal finally got holp and the ox was raise to his feet and led off, walking very feebe and looking at every step as though he was about to drop and give up the weary burden ot life. tTa T.mV that there is a State law somewhere which covers just sueh cases as this and it should be looked np and enforced. There is a rumor current on 4he streets this afternoon that a lady was drowned to-day at Smithville, but as cne of the Review staff went down on the Pastptr to-day and we have heard aothing of it from him, wej are justified in saying that the report must be a false one.
