THE OPERA HOUSE.
"Unknown." j
Quite a large audience grcc'sd Mr.
John A. Stevens at the Opera House last
ni-ht to witness his exteDsiFely adver
tised play of "Unknown, ' and if we may
ju lge from the frequent and vociferous
applause given the several leading actors,
all were highly, pleased with the en'er
tainmentj
The piece is of a style and character
which
seems to have gained coLsiderable popu
larity at tbe North in tha la t decade,
much to the disparagement of Shakes
peare, Sheridan Knowles and other old
fogies, w no make thoir chief actors, as in
deed they do the Lumb'est characters of
their plays, uttjr worJa of wisdom,
whereby those who witness the perform
ance and listen lo the utterances may
learn something, and retire' from the scene
at the ejess of tha play with a little in
formation added to their stock of knowl
edge, together with snn possible beiet
that may account from the myra' of the
pluf" . I !
The pitc3 perfonu.d last uight was a
sort of thrilling sensation made up to ex
cite the sympathy and fascinate the sense
generally of the audienco. It might be
termed an emotional dramatic tragedy,
while in some scenes there was more of
Comedy than anything else, which ex
cited the risiblrs of the audience to an un
controllable extent. Mr. Stevens, in the
role of Harold, the "Unknown," perform
ed his part throughout very well, but 'in
his part of the mad-rjaanj the poor insane
unknown, with his wild freaks s and still
'wilder stare of the crazy nian, with an
occasional Jglimpse of returning reason, we
thought him particularly successful.
Miss Lottie Church, as Bessie Merri
! ...
brigb; was pleasing, graceful and ivaj
cious, to which may bo acjdod her own
natural barms of beauty, which always
lend an additional attraction to the
actress, no matter what the role she as
sumes. ' !
Mr. 1 W. R. Cooper, as Albert Storm
King, the accepted lover of) Bessie, was
passing fair, while Mr. W. H. Bailey J as
Jack 'Salt "a breeza from the ocean,"
looked and acted as though ho had just
stepped from the deck of a British-man-of-war
after a five and twenty years ser
vice. Mr. G. JjY Kotchem, aa Jimmy ' with a
lacerated heart" and Mr. O. B. Hawkins,
as Pat "who hates a foreigner." were ex
ceptionably good in their parts, the
former exhibiting quite a versatile talent
in acting, bssides amusing the audience
considerably by hia inimitable mimicry,
and always created a roar of laughter
whenever be appeared upon the stage.
Mr. Stevens and Mis3 Church in answer
to repeated calls appeared before the cur
tain twice during the evening. J
The whole performance passed o2 very
well and the majority in attendance
seemed well pleased. ' I ,

We have received a pamphlet with tie
above little, of which tbe author is Wil
liam Cain,'Civiil Engineer, and a member
of the North Carolina Board of Health.
Ihia title work contains many valuable
suggestions as to the means of promoting
health, or rather the best means of pre
venting disease. It treats quite fully of
the necessity of proper ventilation and the
best methods of obtaining pure air in
sitting and sleeping rooms. It ahio
treats of tho absolute necessity of pure
water; and advocates a system by which
an abundant supply may .ba procured
that shall le freed, from any of tho nox
ious gases which cWaminato and poison
so many wells and springs. It also
speaks at length of other mattors pertain
ing to the general health of individuals as
well as ncighborhocds. The 'author hi
done a good work, for, although the facts
he has presented are well known to every
in cijig i.v . fcr.-on, the subj et lias not

demands aud tLo truths presented by
him may prompt a more careful consider

; Postal Reform.
The change which was recently made
in tho method .of rel1 ing postage stamps
nas resuitea in a very considerable reform
in tho postal service. Under the old
system, which was invented by! a Metho
dist clergyman, one of Creswell's subor
dinates, postmpsters at minor offices
were paid their salaries on the basis of the
amount of stamps sold at their respective
offices . The result was' the development
ot a great deal of thrift on, the part of
those petty offices. The pdstmasters in
duced their friends in the cities to buy
their stamps of them, and many large
wholesale houses purchased their stamps of
country postmasters. The jresult was that
little towns near the largq cities' often,
sold as, many stamps in a quarter as the
offices where the postmasters! had regular
salaries and had no inducements to in
crease the sales of their stamps. The
consequence was that the method jwas
channel and a now l system adopted, by
which the smaller! class of postmasters
were to be paid on t he basis of the stamps
canceled at their offices. Stamps are no
longer used in the way of 'trade' or sold
at a discount, and there ia a ve y great
falling off in. tho amount f s'tamcs sold
daring the last fiscal year. Tj'hQ sales of
Btamps at some of these minor offices
under the old system was five times as
great as reported for the last fiscal year.
