O., June 20, '81. Editob Daily Review: Dear Sir The News and Observer of Raleigh in its Saturday's issue says that the survey through thejmountains to ascertain the practicability of the route for a narrow gauge road to reach the valuable coal mines in South-west Tir ginia, has just been completed, and that Captain Wm. Cain, the engineer in charge of the survey, has reported favor ably as to the practicability of getting through the mountains at the above named gap. At tne last session of the General As sembly of North Carolina a commission was appointed to meet a similar one from the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley R. R." in reference to the sale of the State's interest in this Road to the Company represented by Gen. Imboden. Has any action ever been taken by the stockhold ers of the Y. V. R. R. Co. on this sub ject? Weknow that at the annual meet ing of the Cape Fear & Y. V. R. R. Co. they decided to purchase the projected Fayetteville k Florence R. R. but not one word has - been said about selling the State's interest in that Road. I know it is further alleged that the CF. k Y. Y. R. R. Company have bought the Fayetteville & Florence R. R. with the inteation -of directing or carrying this vast mineral wealth out of North Carolina to Charleston; but have they the ability to do this? Where are the large shipments of iron (abaut which so much has been writtea) that four months ago were daily to arrive to lay the road From the present terminus of the Fayetteville Road to Greensboro? Now that Gen. Imboden has cost pie ted the mountain survey, we hope soon to hear of his coming in this direc tion with an independent road. Wil mington is his outlet by all means, and if the Cape Fear & Yaddin Valley R. R. will hot come into the arrangement, and enable him to build his read, then it be hooves the city of Wilmington to say to Gen. Imboden: We will build a road to connect with you at Fayetteville. This can be done. It is belieyed that there will be an extra session of the Legisla ture next Winter and we can then get a charter for this road; but this is not nec essary, for Gen. Imboden has a charter from Bristol to Wilmington and all that is wanted now is for Wilming ton to come to the tront, and say, we will meet you. This is one of the greatest schemes ever presented to this communi ty, greater by far than the Wilmington & Weldoa R. R. scheme was, where the private individuals in the city step ped to the front and pledged every dol lar of real estate they owned in the city to secure the building of that great work. Let us be up and doing, and don't let our sister States drink our very life blood and remain quiet. Following is the article from the News and Observer, alluded to by our corres pondent: ItTwill be remembered that a party o Pennsylvania capitalists, iron and coal men, who are building a narrow gauge railroad from Bristol to Kentucky, were induced bv the State geologist to seek an outlet for their products at Wilming ton, by building the missing link between inwa nf tli ft r!.TM Fear an d Yad! kin Valley road, at Patterson, and the Cranberrv Narrow Gauge road, at Eliza bethtown, on the Watauga River. They came and obtained a cnarier ana me f a. bill alio wine them to Dur chase the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley . mi road on certain conditions, i ney were assured of the practicability of a railroad route between these two points, through Cook's Gap and by way of Botne and Cove Creek, to Watauga River. Capt Dwight, the engineer of the Chester and Lenoir road, who had, at the suggestion of Prof. Kerr, made a reconnoissance ot the route two years before, was engaged for them, and Capt. Cain was charged with the work of find ing the route from the head waters of the Yadkin to the summit of the Blue Ridge at Cook's Gap, which is raore than 3,000 feet above the sea. Capt. Cain has succeeded in finding a good crossing at this point, and is now moving down the Watauga from Boone, to meet Gen. Imboden's surveying party coming up from Elizabeth town. Two or three weeks will close the line. Gen. Imboden writes that the Kentuckians are pushing the line on to Cincinnati. So that at last North Carolina is about to realize the dream of a direct thromgh line from her most important seaport across her entire territory to the great Tennessee and Virginia Valley, and to the Ohio and the northwest. This line lies at right angles to the other railroads, and can never be diverted. It will give the shortest possible line from Cincinnati and the Ohio Valley to Ihe seaboard, and will traverse a greater variety of climates and agricultural and mineral productions tean any existing road. It will open up aa immense wealth of timber and water powers. Gen. Imboden writes: "We have assurances of a demand for over 600,000 tons per annum of the North Carolina magnetic ores over our line. Other Kentucky roads will join us at the t$rder." Thus these fine ores will get to Pittsburg in place of the African, Spanish and Italian. This road will also at last bring us three great mineral fertilisers for want of which our agricul ture has long languished salt, lime and plaster. It will bring a large part of our best iron ores into demand and devel op our coal beds, and build up furnaces and numerous other manufactures along its whole course. This would indeed be an important work, and tend more largely to the bene fit of the State than any other road now iu contemplation. Pender Court. Pander Superior Court, Jndee Graves presiding, convened at Burgaw this morning. The attendance, as is usually the case upon the first day, is very small. The criminal docket is quite large, em bracing several aggravated cases of lar ceny and one of infanticide, which bid fair to make the session protracted. Asjlum Excursion. Let it be remembered that our friends of the Masonic fraternity will give an excursion to morrow on the Passport for the benefit of the Oxford Orphan Asy lum. Everything will be done by the committee to ensure the pleasure and comfort of the excursionists, and we hope that the Lodge will realize hand somely by their laudable endeavors to as sist the poor orphans of the Asylum. Freshwater Perch, Trout and Black fish Hooks and Lines. A full assort ment and lowest prices at Jacobt's. t The Rain Last Night. This city and section were visited with a very refreshing rain last night. For a while the water fell m torrents. We were much in need of it and it was ex. ceedingly welcome. It seems to have been pretty general in thi3 section, as we hear of it fifty miles from Wilmington, in Onslow county. The cloud came from the W est and moved over to the East of the city. The rainfall here was .95 of an inch. Beautify your homes by using the N Y. EnamelPaint, ready mixed and war anted. Sold only at Jacobi's. f Capi. Thompson's Lecture We inadvertently neglected to make a report in our last issue of the excellent address delivered at the Opera House on Friday night by Capt. N. F. Thompson, under the auspices of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. The ex ercises were opened with grayer by Rev. E. A. Yates, D. D. Capt. Thoupson is a forcible speaker and delivered an ad dress replete with good argument and sound logic. He was listened to with marked attention and evident interest bv the large audience which had assembled to hear him. His address has no doubt done some good for the prohibition cause. He will make otherEspeeches during the campaign. Skinny Men. Wells' Health Renewer. Absolute enre for nervous debilitv and Weakness of the generative functions, 1 at drug gists, uepot J . u. Munds.
