FRID 4 Y, FEBRUARY 27. 1885. Entered at the Postoffice at Wilmington, N. C, aa second-class matter. Herman Strecker, a stone cotter of Reading, Pa., has tbe largest collection of butterflies in 1 be world . He engages in tbe scientific studies at night and on Sunday g. The authorities of natural history of Johns Hopkins University have examined bis collection and say be is belter posted than they b ye ever met. The rumor is generally believed that Mr. Parnell. Mr. Wm. O'Brien and Mr. Timothy Healey are about to start a daily paper in Dublin in conjunction with United Ireland. It may quicken the efforts ot the existing "journal of tbe ! people" to thoroughly interpret their policy and suport it through thick and thin. The appointment of Prince Hassan as governor-general ot Soudan is snid to be very unpopular. He is hated by the Soudanese because he is a member of the present Khedive's family, and is believed to have acted with imbecility and cowardice. Tbe Turks consider that hi aDpointment means British oc cupation. ,, . Mr. Henry M. Stanley is arranging for the publication of a book n the Congo The work will have tbe official sanction of the King oithe Belgians and of the International African Associa- tion. It is to combine the characteris tic? ot a history, a gazetteer and a guide-nook, as far as the Congo region is concerned, and is intended to be es pec ally useful to colonists. The most terrible example ot a step mother's cruelty eyer known eccurred in New York on Sunday evening. Rosa Dreyer, atter severely beating her step daughter of four years of age, in a violent tit of temper placed the cnild on a hotstove Tbe screams of the suffering child soon brought assistance, and it was rescued from a horrible death only to linger in suffering. The child's father was in bed very sick, and when be scolded bis wife she told htm that if he prosecuted her she would poison him. 1 The following dispatch from Athens, (la,, to the Philadelphia Press, dated February 22, explains itself: 'This city has been thrown into a state of consternation by a threat that dynamite will be used in case the Prohibitionists succeed in voting liquor out of the city at the coming election. Athens is the seat ot the State University, which has three hundred students, and for this reason alone the canvas has attracted wide attention. The contest' has been prolonged and bitter, and will close on Wednesday. Letters have been sent to tbe various leaders of the Prohibition movement threatening dynamite 'in case tanaticism wins ihe day." The Banner says : "We defy tbe threat and will enrry the county for Prohibition if Athens blazes as high as the sky." ; It is now looked upon as absolutely eertain that Mr. Manning will be tbe next secretary of the treasury. It is further given out on excellent authority that tbe gentleman will take his depar ture for Washington on Thursday next. As to other members ot the Cabinet, outside of Messrs, Bayard, Garland and Vilas, it is again declared that Mr. Patrick Collins, of Massachusetts, is being seriously debated in Mr. Cleve land's mind as an eligible man for secretary of the navy. Arguments are put forward to the effect that Mr. Collins would serve to conciliate that element o. tbe Democratic parly so adroitly carried over to Mr. Blaine by the promises of an aggressive foreign poiicy. Mr. Cleveland is understood to like the man, and recognizes in him meiits that would in bis estimation fit him for tbe place mentioned. . Debbeb, or Dabba, tbe town around which it is proposed to concentrate tbe British forces in the Soudan during tbe approaching summer, stands upon the left bank of the Upper Nile, at the Southern extremity of its great bend to the Westward. It lies about fifteen miles Southeast of Old Don go la, and rather more than forty-three almost due West of Korti, the present British headquarters. Seen from the river it presents tbe slovenly and half ruin ous appearance characteristic of ail Arab towns, slightly relieved, however, by the picturesqueness ot tbe graceful date palms and other tropical trees that cluster around it. Bat its position at the junction of the great caravan routes which run Northward from Darfour, ElObeid, (tbe capital of Kordofan.) and Khartoum itself give it a consider able strategic importance. It was formerly selected by the Egyptian Government as tbe terminus of its pro jected railway across tbe Bayudah De sert to t Mete mneh and Shendy, a scheme approved at the time by Gen. Gordon, but never carried into execu tion. Now is the time to give Smith's Worm Ou. lyd.w FEBRUARY FUN. The old slipper strikes the hardest in the fall. Lowell Courier.
