From tbe Northwest comes the m w that before the snow is off the ground adventurers are pouring into the Oeur d'A'.ene mining districts by tbousaud-. So it seems that tnc sad lessons of last year arc to be learned over again, but U will be the old school of experi ence to a new set of scholars. Most of the students oflast year starred to death. Most of the sneering reports about the New Orleans Exposition are said to come from a certain class oi drummers who are habitual grumblers and chronic bores. And yet the worst thing ol all is the complaint ol the Timet-Democrat that "there are thousands ot persons in New Orleans who have not gone to the slight trouble of riding four iniles to see lite ireatcst .how ever given.1' The German Univerity Calendar for 1 885 contains a list of 2.125 academic leachurs and 'J7.4S0 students, of whom 7,079 are medical or pharmaceutical. The latter arc distributed as follows : Berlin, 991; .Munich, 889; Wurzburk, T 43 ; I.eipsic, 608; Oriefswald: 150; lire si au, 121 ;v Freiburg. 380 ; Bonn, ': Hatle. 282; Heidelberg and Konigs burr. each 207 ; Tubingen, 221; Mar barg, 210; Strasbure, 191; Gottingcn, Krlaugen. 186; Kiel, 175; Jena, j m, Geissen. 148; Rostock,- 71. - The Dirtlio of Rome publishes a pro positus troai two Italian doctors, which agree to eat "such a quantity of gela tine c ntaiuing the comma bacillus as a eiiienhc commission may consider sufficient to induce the disease.1' They ask that their names be kept a secret from all except the members of the commission, and that their families be taken care of in case of death, an accident which they by no means expect. , The Mediciniscke Zicluny complains that while London has but one doctor to 3,000 inhabitants, Vienna has one 1 wery 1,509, and its practitioner must put up with smaller fees. Sir Spencer Wells is cited as haying re vived many Lime? $80,000 or $00,000 for a single operation. In Parts, Dr. 1 'au is mentioned as having a profee onai income of 140.000,- and Dr. Koehenef of Strasburg, is stated to bare received a fee of $100,000 for at teudin ; ti Spauish princess. The troubles of Rev. Dr. Burchard, he c:s:ng of his church. Saturday's New York litrald tells the story as follows: The troubles of the Murray Hiil Presbyterian Church have culminated in tbe resignation of the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Burchard. the man who talk ed to Blaine, and in the dissolution of the church society. The church prop erty will be surrendered to tbe Presbj terv, with the proviso that th sexton sli ill be maintained in h:s present po sition. Some Republican membersjjof the church think tey have more use lor a sextan now than they did before election. The history ot the church is unique. When Dr. Burchard was called to its nulnit. rive vears aso. the church was 4iinMinder a varied assortment of jth - stru debts Dr. Burchard had gaineo popu- lt . larity in other gelds and had made ! The flames were put out by some par quite a reputation as a speaker during j ties on the premises and tbe damage the long years of bis work in the min- was but slight. There was no general istry. though nothing like the reputa- buta Uon of the fire depart. tion he gainel in one memorable day ( - . ' r last fall Under his management the I ment reached the ground to Qnd, fortn- oonarpo-ftiion increased and the debts were paid. I mt i Then came the campaign oi ico4 ine church never got oyer Dr. IBurchard's speech. Part of the congregation had previously removed to Harlem, and a a s.t . tit loll good many oi inose wuo weieicu nu ed their pastor there too. Because Dr. Burchard's 6on supported Cleveland, some members of the church were mean enough to accuse Dr. Burchard of haipgdoneit on purpose, and thoy wrote him a letter demanding his resig nation, though they afterward withdrew it. Or. Burchard was retired by the Presbytery on a pension of $500. but a mild measure l:ke this was not suffi cient to counteract the effect of the speech. The troubles continued, many members of the -church threatened to withdraw and there seemed" little pros pect that the church would continue self-supporting. At a meeting at the trustees on Monday evening resolutions were adopted dissolving the Church and surrendering the property to the Presbytery, with the stipulations that thai bDdy should care for the church poor and let the sextiou keep his place This action was ratified subsequently by the congregation. Ou Wednesday evening last Dr Burchard wrote, resigning as pastor and asking that out of consideration lor his long service in thei denomination tbe people request that he be made pastor emeritus. The resignation was accepted and the request granted. William McClenahan, M. B. Smith i.nd Thomas Graham were appointed commissioners to transfer the property. The church will probably be turned into a mission not a foreign one for Dr. Burchard. There was a narrow escape from a serious conflagration at about 8 o'clock this morning at tbe residence of Mr. Henry Schutte, on Market street, near Third. The fire caught from the stove pipe, and near the rool ol the building, it havine been ascertained atterwards tth did not rcach the flue. nately. that their services were not needed. Memorial Day The Raleigh News and Observer says : Next Memorial day Col. Alfred. M. Waddell is to deliver the address, nd as the determination of the Ladies" Me morial Association is that every recur ring occasion is to be commemorative of some distinguished soldier who fel in the Lost Cause, tbe theme of Col. Waddell's address will be the '"Lile and Services of (Jen. Geo. B. Ander sdn." From Col. Waddell's reputation for eloquence, elegant diction and dis criminating judgment, we may well anticipate an effort of unusual beauty, that will be very gratifying to the ad mirers and friends of the lamented Gen. Geors:e B. Anderson. Now is the season lor painting your houses. Go to Jacobi's Hardware Depot and buy your paints, if yon want to save mouey. t liaster Music. The following has been handed iu as a communication to the Review l is from the pen of one who is thorough ly capable of judging in all musical matters, and these remarks, which are volunteered, will be road with much pleasure and endorsed all who were so fortunate as to be present on the oc casion referred to. The folio wins is tbe ! communication : Under the guiding aud and instructive skill ot Mrs. M. r. Taylor, the wor shippers at St. John's Church were treated yesterday morning to some of the finest and best Easter music to which we have ever listened. The music selected for the 'occasion was from the work of Mr. Dudley Buck, an American composer, who has won an enviable reputation in the musical world as the author ot classical music. Mr. Buck, aside from being a fine natural musician, has evidently been a thorough, earnest and successful stu dent of the old masters, ot whom he has seemed to catch inspiration by which to form beautiful melodies and frame for them most superb harmo nies. Mrs. Taylor was most fortunate and evinced mnsicianly skill and taste iu making these selections, for they could hardly have been improved upon. She presided at the or gan and conducted the music vpterdav with the apparent ease and skill of a proteesional, and in fact it was owing in great degree to her thor ough training of tbe choir and orchestra that the difficult music was rendered with such precision and ex pression. The instrumental accompa nists were Messrs Mitchell and Schlo-s, cornetists. and Mr. Alderman, flutist. The choir was composed of Mrs. Wm. H. MoKar.'auJ. sonrano: Mrs. J. K. Lippitt, alto: Mr. J. E. Willson, tenor, and Mr. A..G. Conoley. base. All the voices were thoroughly trained, were in perfect tune and there was a blending of harmonies tBat was superior, Mrs. McFariand has a pure soprano voice ofexquite sweetness, combined with flexibility, compass and power. Mrs. Lippitt's rich, pure alto is too well known to need praise from me. Mr. Wiilsonhasa full tenor voice, while Mr. Conoley's is properly a oantone. It would hardly have been possible for voices to blend niore sweetly and the choir and orchestra deserve a credit which will never be fully awarded them lor their efforts to render the music so skillfully. Had they been paid pro fessionals from some tar away city, they would have received unstinted praise. i Music us.
