For all his summer sweetheorls lay a-dyui; j , Blue gentians fringed the tiny upland river. , Some late bird-note set oriesad heart a-quiver, And it was lone to wait. The snow fell thick on river, wood and c' caring. The blasts swept round and round in mad careering, And out among the rocks, from dusk to dawning. Sounded the fog bell's wildest cry or warning And it was long to watt. Spring came again, clad in her beauty royal. As spring will come to steadfast hearts and loyal, And lo! the Starling into harbor swing ing, j While from each hedge and tree the birds were singing. 4 "It was not iong to wait!" Emma C. "Well, I tell you what Lsay is true. I give you my word for it." "That's just the trouble. If you didn't give me quite so many words about it I might believe it." And then the room was as still as a store where they don't advertise. Tonkers Statesman. A Loner '8tringr." Western newspapers are boasting over a printer in the employ ol the San Francisco Chronicle who has completed a half a century of a sit at the "Case." There is a printer in Erie, Pa J Mr. MichaelJ..Quinn, who has a longer string than the Golden Gate man. "Father" Quinn was apprenticed when a lad to a printer in the city of Water ford, Ireland, in 1830, and after serving his apprenticeship got a "sit" on the London limes, and bad several "fat takes" of the account of the Queen's marriage. Coming to America. Mr. Quinn got cases "on the Evening Post, which he held for several years. Turnr. ing his lace westward he went to Erie, and served nearly twenty years ou the Erie Dispatch. He now holds cases on the Erie Daily Herald, and although almost 70, uses his eves without the aid of the optician or glasses. "Father" Quinn's years of toil and wearying labor represent startling feat ures in the way of figures. For in stance, assuming a fair average rate of sceed, taken from bis best of 10,000 ems and his rate of 5,000 at the present day, giving 7,500 ems for an average, it wilt be found that the enormaus amount of 119,340 000 ems of matter have been set up by this compositor during the past two or three years more than half a century. In setting this it was nece sary to handle over 358 020,000 pieces of metal twice over, including the dis tribution. It would fur.tber interest the reader to know that the type so set would weigh 187,700 pounds, or 94 tons, which this old man has lifted piece by piece in the specified time. In seMing type the average distance the hand travels is a foot and a naif, or thereabouts. Con sequently his -band has travelled over 516,000.000 feet, or a matter of 97,727 miles, or within a few hundred feet of being tour times the circumference of the earth. This does not include Uhe distribution, which would increase the distance to about live and a half times around the globe. "Father" Quion's 4 string" would fill about 16,015 col umns of space. If stretched out in a continuous line it would form a belt over two miles wide by over seven miles in solid reading matter. Put these lines in one continuous "hue and it would extend 128 miles. We are in danger of having too much culture in this country. An a53tbetic buff colored pug recently got mad in Boston because his mistress dressed him in a light green blanket. It is now stated that H M. Stanley, the great African explorer, wears a swallow-tail coat. We can now under stand why he was able to travel among the cannibals for years without being roasted and eaten. No man looks juicy in a swallow-tail coat. Through Mail. Doctor: "Well, how are we to-day?" Patient: "Oh, I've bad a miserable day, doctor." Doctor: "But your wife says you haven't groaned at ali to-day. while yesterday " Patient: "Good reason . Thought there wasn't anybody 'round. That woman is always taking an unfair advantage of me." Boston Journal. "Where is that new man that came With us in January ?" said one M. T. to another. "He left last week," was the response. "Well, it he left last week, it was because he couidn't get his bands on it," put in their slightly absent-minded employer, looking up from bis books.
