Scales has appointed two dele, gates to represent the State ot North Carolina at the approaching Commer cial Convention in Atlanta- one from Raleigh and one from Charlotte. As usual. Wilmington, the chief commer cial city of the State, is overlooked in the appointment of delegates to a com mercial convention. But it is a cold day when Raleigh gets left. In Germany the movement for a to tal closing of all shops of manufacture and trade on Sunday grows daily. An immense meeting in favor of the move ment was held recently in Berlin. The meeting was attended by large delega tions from all the public commercial associations in the capital, and by a commission specially appointed by the Reichstag to consider the subject. An increase in the police force is be ing earnestly asked for in St. Louis, where now 440 men are expected to patrol efficiently sixty-two and a half square miles of territory. In one case a policeman's beat comprises eighty three blocks, a territory which a mem ber of the St." Lonii police board is quoted as saying no man could walk over once m his whole working day. I Siikier. the Old Reliable Clothier, 114 Market Street, is now busy from early morning to dnsky eve selling and packing goods, and we really congrato- late bim upon his success in business. His aim has always been in selling good goods at the lowest prices. Be sure and give him a call . t A Haunt d House. It seems now that we have in this city a real ly haunted house with a ver itable ghost a3 a regular nightly visi tant. The house in question is on Second street, between Hanover and Brunswick, and is occupied by Mr. James E. Peadrick, who is employed atthe commission house of Messrs Hansen & Smith, on South Water street. The family of Mr. Peadrick consists ot himself, bis wile, five chil dren and two sisters of bis wife. The eldest sister is about 10 years of nge and it was she to whom the apparition was first made manifest. She states that it is the ghost of her mother. Mrs. Kiuyon Carroll, who died pyee-rs ago near While Lake, Bladen county, whence the two sisters have recently arrived. Hearing this report wo called upon Mr. Peadrick and he vers kindly relat ed to us what he knew of the matter. He says tbat his wile's two sisters, named respectively Mattie and Jose phine Carroll, have been at his house a little more than a week and the elder is about 16 while the younger is about 11 years of age. The first he knew of the matter was upon his return home from his work last Thursday night, at which time he found his household in consid erable confusion and some of its mem bers in great alarm. When he ask ed for the cause of the excite ment his wife replied tbat he would soon find out, and sure enough he did. In a small bed room, connected by a door with the main room of the house, Mattie Carroll was lying upon a bed and she called Mr. Peadrick to come there as her mother was there. He went to the door, but saw nor heard anything unusual. He was then told that an unseen hand had thrown a pillow from the bed. before his arrival, and had extinguished the light, which was in a chair in the main hall. He was inclined to laugh at the matter and sat down upon the side of the bed and was pulling off his shoes when he was stricken in the side by an unseen hand, the room at the time being well lighted. This was a surprise to him, but feeling tbat it would be better to pay no at tention to the matter, he put on a cool demeanor and asked Martha il she thought she could see her mother, when the latter replied that she could both see and hear her distinctly. To this Mr. Peadrick replied that it was more than he could do and told the young lady that it was nothing but an unduly excited imagination. He had barely expressed himself, however, when a pillow was thrown from the bed by an unseen hand and fell by the side of bis wife. Mr, Peadrick has a son aged about 10 years who also claimed that he could see and hear his grandmother, and singu larly enough these two who had seen the apparition had not the least particle ot fear, while nearly all the other mem bers of the household were in a state of intense nervous alarm. Of course sleep was driven from the eyes of the entire family for the night, and invisi ble hand3 threw the pillows from the bed at intervals until midnight, at which time a sound was heard resem bling a kiss, when Martha stated that her mother had gone.. During Friday Mr. Peadrick endeav. ored to reconcile himself to the idea that the occurrences of the night before were the results of excited imaginations, but when he returned to his home on Friday night he found the same condi tion of things existing as upon the night before, and the alarm of the family correspondingly increased, with the exception of the two already named as having seen the apparition. He went to the door of the bed room where Martha Carroll was lying upon the bed, when a pillow, thrown by an unseen hand, struck him full in the face. These disturbances continued until Mr. Peadrick moved the bed into the main hail, when tbey ceased and were heard no more during Friday night. On Saturday night the bed was moved early into the main hall and no disturbance was created during the night. On Sunday night the bed was kept in its proper pTace in the bed room and as soon as the young lady entered the room, at a little after 8 o'clock, the usual disturbance began. Some of the neighbors, arcused by curiosity and at the request of Mr. Peadaick and his family, arrived at the house early on Sunday night with the hope that they might assist in ferreting out' the mystery, but tbey soon became so much alarmed that tbey needed assistance, instead of being of any material help. Duiing the nigh1 pillows were thrown about the bed room and even into the main ball bj invisible hands, and in one instance a pillow was taken from under Miss1 iifSW CarroH's head and thrown at Mr. Peaa-! rick, hitting bim in th face. After bearing Mr. Pearf rick's account we went to the house, which is on the; Northwest corner ofrHanover and Sec-1 ond streets, to see it we could learn anything further in the matter. Miss Carroll, who isalSlo be 16 years W. kok3 to be no more than 14. Sbc is not a healthy looking person and stated that she had been afflicted with dropsy, a disease which her general appearance strongly indicated. She spoke with perfeetjfrec dom and honesty about the matter and said that what she saw was her mother and nobody else. She is uneducated, but seemed to be entirely honest, in ali sbe said, and was corroborated in her state ments by Mrs. Peadrick and others who were present. She said that she had seen her mother once before since her decease, and that was in Bladen county before she came to this city. We learu tbat quite a number of persons will be at the house to night and a strong effort will be made to un ravel the mystery. Tnere is nothing about the house, it-3 surroundings or any of the members of the family which would suggest trickery or fraud, and so far as they are concerned, we are of the opinion that they are entirely honest in their statements and Martha Carroll we are confident, has told the truth in the matter, and we believe that she honestly thinks that she has seen and conversed with the disembodieel spirit of her deceased mother.
