Editor Prop WILMINGTON, N. C. MOND4Y. MAY 4. 185 (Entered at the Postomce at Wilmington, N. C, aa Bocond -class matter. During the first year of tbe Crimean war tbe value of exports of farm pro ducts of this country increased from $33 500,000 the previous year to $67, 000,000. The following year tbe value was $42,500,000. and in 1856 we ex ported broadstofVs amounting to $77. 686,455. In the event of war between England and Russia now. it is bardiy to be expected that anything like so great a proportionate increase of ex ports would result, but that we should reap some benefit is certain. The Supreme Courts of New York and Massachusetts have settled the mat er as to who owns a medical pres cription. Tbe substance of tbe decis ions is, that the physician, in prescrib ing, gives the patient a written order for diugs. and their delivery terminates the operation. The druggist may, on his own responsibility, renew tbe drugs for he is a merchant. and has a right to sell drugs iu any shape He is not bound to give a copy of the prescrip tion, nor even to keep it, though be usually retains it as a protection in case of error on the part ot doctors or patients. Dr. John J. Moran attended Edgar Allan Poe in his dying moments. He now writes that the habit of intemper ance did, to some extent, cloud the poet's early life, but not his later years. Toe's constitution was t?uch that he could not become a dram-drinker, and for fur years previous to his death he was perfectly temperate. His death was caused by ill-treatment and ex posure suffered from a party of Balti more roughs, who caught him, cooped him up, drugged him, and voted him during an exciting election. In attend ing him daring his last illness, Dr. Moran saw that his patient ave no sijrns of a debauch. He refused a glass of spirits the day before he died. , . . - The majority of the women in Gov ernment employ are very quiet arid matter of fact, and are thorough ex perts in tbe lines of business where they are employed. They make good typo writers, short hand writers and copyists. The most expert counters of money in the treasury are women. As detectors of counterfeit money some of the ladies in the national redemp tion division of the treasury have no equals. The presence of fifteen or twenty hystericky women in the de partment is enough to give the chiefs a prejudice against women clerks as a class. There is no doubt that the pres ent commission investigating the de partment is of the opinion that a greater proportion of women is employed than should be. The cause of popular education is making steady advances in Great Brit ain. Compulsory attendance has in creased tbe number of scholars ; there is a keener competition and a better standard of instruction, while there is a continuous growth of local taxation at.d larger resort to the consolidated fund for the support and improve" rcent of the means of education. The outlay from State grants for 1884 was 3,110,912, an advance upon that Of 1683 amounting to $264 885 This sum was distributed as follows: Church of England schools, 1,420,000; school boards, 976,000; other schools, 510, 000. "Other schools" comprise Roman Catholic and Wesleyan schools. A gratifying feature of tbe statistics is the fact that the State schools are increas ing rapid. y in popularity. In the Church ot England schools there are 2.454,788 sittings, while the average at tendance is only 1,607,833 In the board or State schools there is an av erage attendance of 1,115,832, with only 1,490,174 seats BradstreeVs furnishes tbe following commercial summary for the past week: Tbe general tenor of the special tele grams received by BradstreeCs yester day corroborates the view taken by this journal early in the year, that while the spring season would be likely to re sult in a moderate degree of commer cial activity, which by comparison with the winter's dullness might suggest a trade revival, that the volume of mer chandise distributed would tall behind the tota. during the like period in 1884, and that tbe end of the season would bring no prospects of a revival in the near. at ure. This forecast holds true at the present time, the close of the spring season. The past week revealed no gain in the distribution of merchan dise in any line, with a possible ex ception in favor ot boots and shoes from Boston. Dry goods are as slow of movement and as unsatis factory as to the margin of profit as heretofore. The sales of groceries and provisions have not increased. At the west unfavorable weather has prevented a good trade in most lines, and the resulting dullness has been emphasized by farmers being busy with spring farm work. In the northwest tbe weather has been excel lent, and farmers have been crowding every effort to increase their spring wheat acreage. Seeding is well ad vanced, and the plant where op is thriving well. Chicago's general trade report, while admitting no favorable ontlook. takes refuge in the claim that there are no signs of lower depths. I he damage to the winter-sown wheat, reported by the government to amount to a shortage of 93 000,000 bushels as corn pared with the crop of 1881, points to a harvest of 420,000,000 bushels, a quantity eqcal to tbe harvest of 1883 Prices or wheat and flour have been unsteady under vary ing rumors as to the prospects of war abroad. In accordance with the tenor of late reports the movement has been npward. No. 2 red closed last night at 103.c. against lOOAc. last week, and No. 2 mixed corn at 59c.. as compared with 56c. Flour has advanced 2535c. per barrel Hog products have been dull and inactive. Speculation has been light, and purchases for export limited as for grain. The general industrial situation is practically unchanged, in terest centering on the approaching contest between the Western iron and steel manufacturers and the Amalgam ated Association of Workirjgmen. Raw wool is in little better demand, if any. notwithstanding the improvement in the request for certain lines of woolen goods. The prospective pressure ot the new clip prevents a gain in prices. The war news exercised a depressing influence on prices of cotton, and middling uplands closed at 10 ll-16c. as compared with lO&c. on April 24. There are no new features as to iron or coal. Petroleum is slightly higher but late reports of pro duction during April are depressing. The movement of grocery staples is still difappointine. Coffee and tea are lower. Sugar advanced on Speculative buying. Canned goods are weak. Dairy products are lower tod quiet. There were 167 failures in the Uuited Stafes during the past week, as com pared with 198 in the preceeding week, and with 151. 132 and 96 respectively in the corresponding weeks of 1884, 1883 and 1882 About 84 per cent, were those of small traders whose capital was less than $5,000. Canada had an increase of 9. MISCELLANEOUS. A Youthful Editor.
