Wagonettes will leave Howard igine House at 0 and 7 o'clock. There will be mu9ic for danciog and a. good time generally. - Explanation. We learn that the Phantom, in the race on the Fourth came in at the finish about five minutes behind the other boats. She would have been in earlier, but had the misfortune to carry away her traveler by which he was delayed. It was an oversighVupon the part of the judges that her time was not . taken. Tliey Aro Coming:. By a letter received by the fire de partment in this city it is now known that Newborn Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 1, will arrive here on Tuesday next, the 14th inst. There will bo about 30 men in the ranks and they will bring their engine, hose reel and three horses with them. It has been determined by the different tire companies in this city to'gUo their visiting brethren a cordial reception and the benefit of a rousiDg good time. A Broken Noso. The people of Laurinburg celebrated the Fourth and towards night there was a good deal of whisky dis turbance, e?pecially among some of the colored population. James Saunders, deputy sheriff ot Richmond Co , was called on towards night to arrest one of the most turbulent ot the colored men, and in attemptiug to perform his duty the latter struck him a severe blow on toe nose with brass knuckles, which broke his nose. We failed to learn the name of the colored man. Our Congratulations. At the recent commencement exercis es ot the Academy.of the Visitation, at Georgetown, D. C, two of Wilmiog toa's lair daughters were the recipients of several premiums for proficiency in the various branches of study pursued. The young ladies in "question were Miss Stella Divine, daughter of Capt. John F. Divine, and Miss. Mary Wrieht. dauehter. of Mr. Thomas H Wright, and the premiums were for ex cellence in (Rhetoric. Literature, Com position. History. Geography, Chrialain Doctrine. Arithmetic. Grammar, Elo cution, Latin, Music, Water Color Painting, Housekeeping, Neatness and Order. The number of students was large nearly every State and Territory, be fides Mexico, being represented, and where there were so many competitors it is pleasant to know that two from our city bore off such a large propor tion of the honors, and we most hearti- U. congratulate the young ladies .upon their success.' In Accordance with our usual custom at this" season of the year, wo close out our entire stock of Spring and Summer Clothing, regardless of cost, with a view to make room for one ot the largest purchases of Fall and Winter Clothing ever brought to Wilmington. We have every reason to believe that the new prices which go into effect to-morrow morning and to continue until Septem ber 1st; will prove to be the lowest ever placed npon perfect first class goods. 'The National Base Ball Club. 0 Goldsboro, arrived here at a little after noon on the local freight train and reg istered at the Commercial Hotel. This clu now has eight professionals and propose to beat the Seasides.in a match game at the grounds of the latter this afternoon. It will be a hard fought game. Fine Carriages. Capt. T. J. Southerland advertises the merits ol the work of the Columbus Bdggy Co. in this issue. He, has the vehicles for sale and also in use in his liyery stables and they are of 'ex cellent workmanship, made ol the best material and are as easy as a cradle to ride in. The vehicles manufactured by this company have, as they deserve, an excellent reputation throughout the entire country, and many people prefer them to any other make. Iein ngrnotism. A short time since we spoke at con siderable length of magnetism and men tioned the fact that a watch had been magnetized and rendered for all practi cal uses worthless by having been placed upon the joints of two steel rails at the railroad. Watehe3, we are told, very frequently get more or less mag netized and become unreliable as time-keepers in consequence. To de magnetize articles that have occe been magnetized has been a, study for along time among scientific men and volumi nous treatises have been written upon the subject. The obiect has been to en tirely demagnetize an article which has been fully magnetized, in an efficient and inexpensive manner. This has been effectually done by Mr. George Darden. jr., of this city, aK though we do not know whether he originated the plan, which is extremely simple, or not. A few days since we saw him test a common nail by a cun ning little instrument called a magno meter, and thcre was not the least sign of magnetism in it. lie then, by the aid of a common horse shoe magnet, fully magnetized the nail, as was shown by tho magnometer, and afterwards he demagnetized the nail, as was also de monstrated by the same instrument. Singularly enough the demagnetization was accomplished through the aid of the horse shoo magnet by which the nail had at first been magnetized, by simply reversing tho poles. County Commissioners.
