Elsbach, Prop, tf Steamboatmen report that the recent rains have caused a riso of about three teet in the Cape Fear. This makes navigation-much better than it has been re cently, but a still further rise is highly desirable. It was a remark of one of our city firemen this morning, as he was look ing at the stalwart forms of several Of his Newbern brethren, "Well, the Newbern folk must feed their firemen better than Wilmington does!" We are indebted to Mr. C. M. D. Humphrey for the present to day of a luscious canteloupe and lot of tomatoes. Tbey were very nice and were selected from his stcck at his store on South Front street, near the market. We have received some most excel lent specimens of what are known as the "goose plums," which were raised by Capt. D. P. High, of Whiteville. Columbus county. They were very fair to look upon and delicious to the taste. Don't forget the excursion to Smith ville and the Forts to-morrow on the steamer Passport. It is gotten up by the ladies of the Fifth Street M. E. Church and tbey always succeed in having a pleasant party and an enjoya time. The picnic to-morrow to Seaside Park under the auspicies of St. Paul's Lutheran Sunday School, promises to be a really pleasant affair and will un doubtedly draw a large thron? to that pleasant resort for a day of recreation and pleasure. Call at; Jacobi's Hardware Depot and examine his fine assortment of fishing poles and lines. t Indications. For the South Atlantic Stages, gen erally fair weather except on the South ern coast, where there will be occasion al local rains, variable winds and near ly stationary temperature. An Alligator. On Monday evening, as Capt. E. W. Manning was ou his way home and when within about two and - a ball miles of the Sound, heovertook an alii gator who appeared, to be bound for that very popular resort. The captain undertook the capture of his 'gatorship, but as the latter showed fight it became necessary to kill him. He was three feet and ten inches long. - Body Found. . In removing the last of the cargo of the steamer Wave, this morning, the body of a colored man was found and was the last thing to be removed. It is supposed that be was on deck at the time of the explosion and was drawn into the hold onto the guano by the suction when the boat sunk. The name of the drowned man is not definitely known, but is supposed to be one of the crew named Jessup. Death of a Journalist. Mr. Nixon P. Cliogman, of the staff of the Goldsboro Messenger, died at th residence of his brother-in-law. Col, L. W. Humphrey, in that town on Satur day morning last of paralysis of the heart. Ho was the editor of , the Splinters'. column of the Messenger, to which he contributed many articles of genuine humor, He was a genial com panion, a whole souled gentleman and a humorous writer of real ability. Peace to his ashes. Now is the season for painting your honses. Go to Jacobi's Hardware Depot and buy your paints, if you want to save money. t Ml WILMINGTON. N. C. WEDNESDAY. JULY 15. The Firemen. After the duties and pleasures ot yes terday were concluded, so far as the firemen as a body I were concerned, there was a general interchange of opinion and sentiment among the mem bers Many of our visiting guests met with old friends and acquaintances with whom they found pleasure in re calling the memories of bye-gone days. Thus the time passed until all sought their needed rest, after a day of unusual fatigue in the extreme heat. At half past 8 o'clock this morning the several companies formed at Little Giant Hall and marched in procession to the dock at the foot of Chestnut street, where a test of the different engines was to be made. The engines were soon on the ground and the side walk, leading from Water to Second street, on Chestnut, were thronged with 'adies and gentlemen who came to witness the exciting contest. The prizes for which the contest was to be made were a handsome silver ice pitcher and silver drjnking cup as the first prize and a fine brass mounted clock with a cathedral gong as the second prize, and were the same of which we made men tion a few days since. These prizes were to bo awarded by a committee selected for the purpose, consisting of Capt. C. D. Myers, Chief of the Wil mington Fire Department; Capt. Wm. Ellis, Chief of the Newbern Fire De partment, and Capt. J. B. Magill, Chief of the Charlotte Fire Department. There were to be two tests ; the first to thrown water through 50 feet of hose, and the second, through 200 fcet- At the time appointed for the trial to commence the signal was given, and in an incredibly short spac3 of time three powerful streams, forced through the hose by the different engines, were flooding Chestnut street. After atrial through 50 feet ot hose, the 200 feet test wast made and all the engines showed remarkable powers. The first prize was fairly won bv tne Newbern engine, there being no question among the com mittee as to the fact that she was fairly and justly entitled to the same.- There was a difference of opinion, however, as to whether the A. Adrian or the Little Giant was entitled to the second prize. The test was so nearly equal that it was only by the nicest discrimi nation and judgment that a fair decis ion could be reached, and the commit tee, after canyassing the matter for a considerable time, had not arrived at a conclusion when they were obliged to leave on the Passport for the excursion down the river. The trial was long and hotly contest ed by each engine. The place selected was not "well adapted for such a trial on account of the trees which overhung the streets. These not only very much interfered with the streams which were thrown, but were also a great hindrance to the committee in making up a just Verdict. At about balf past 12 o'clock this af ternoon the firemen embarked on board the Passport, which had been waiting for them, and went down the river on an excursion to Smithvillc and the Forts. Upon their return they will adjourn to meet again at the City Hal1 at 9 o'clock to night, when the prizes will be awarded to tho successful en gines after which a supper, provided for the occasion, will be" served. Thd Newbern Company will leave for homo to morrow morning. Base Ball, The match game of basebaU between the Henderson and the Seaside nines, which came off at the grounds of the latter yesterday afternoon, drew a large throng ot visitors to witness the exciting sport. The Hendersons came here with an excellent reputation for scientific playing and much interest was felt in the contest in consequence ot the record they had made in previous games. Additional interest was given to the game of yesterday from ,tbe fact that it had been announced that our white firemen with their guests from Newbern would be present to witness the trial. The game was called promptly at the time specified, with Mr. H. Emerson as the Umpire. The ' playing was ex cellecton both sides and the game was holy contested from the beginning to the end. Both nines played remark ably well. - but the Henderson nine were accorded the victory in a score of 2 to 0. They play a game this after noon, when the Seasides will make a desperate effort to divide the honors or the two days by winning the game. The reputation won by the Hendersons in previous games was fully maintained by their playing yesterday and it may be truly said that they are "hard to beat." Parade and Drill. The Wilmington Light Infantry will have a dress parade and drill in front of the City Hall at half past 6 o'clock next Monday evening and will be in spected by Col. W. C. Jones, 2nd Reg. N. C. S. G. The Cornet Concert Club will also parade and furnish music for the occasion, which will be an induce ment for the public, who are cordially idnilcd to be present. 1 District Conference The Wilmington District Conference of the M. E. Church South will meet at Smituvillc to-morow. The following are the delegates from the churches in this city: Front Street W. M. Parker, C . L. Grafllin. W. W. Hodges, J.JW. King. Alternates Geo. Borden still continues very sick. Mr. W. E. Springer and wife left this morning for Connecticut, expect ing to be absent about three months. Capt. W. M. Parker and wife left this morning for his old home in Con necticut. They expect to be absent about two months. Capt. Wm. Ellis, Chief of the New bern Fire Department, was in the city yesterday and took part in the festivi ties of the day. The fact was not re ported to us and consequently we failed to mention him in our report ot the pro ceedings. The many friends qfMr John Grant, who was so seriouly injured yesterday, will be glad to know that he is as com fortable to-day as could reasonably be expected. As a matter of course, he is in considerable pain, but otherwise ho is doing very well. A Sad and Sudden Death. The.many friend3 of Mr. David H. Walsh will sympathize with him in his bereavement and sorrow, caused by tho sudden and unexpected death of his son, Mr. Frauk C. Walsh, which occurred at 8 o'clock this morning at Florence, S. C. The deceased was just 26 years of age and was a young man of much promise. He was, taken sick Sunday night and this morning laid a corpse. The disease which caused his untimely end was pronounced con gestion of the liver. Mr. Walsh moved a year ago, but at from this city about the time of his death, was employed.as a salesman in the dry goods house of Mr nStprnhfirTCr af. Vrnrp.no.P-. Lprs than a month ago he married a lady of Williston, S. C , and his new estate in life opened before him a beautiful vista of happy days, but the dread messen ger.'Death, threw his pall over lhe path of the newly wedded couple and claimed one of them as his own.
