But as of tbe forty-four districts rtill unpolled seventeen are in Ireland, of which the Nationalists are expected to clrry fnurteen. while f the twenty two in England the Tories should ob tain ten, the chances now seem to promise a msjorily of three or four tjt the fugitive coalition which bore rrd Salisbury into office. Even should the Liberals, contrary to the present indications, gain the same slight preponderance over both elements of ppo5iiioii( the significance' of the elect ion vouM be materially altered. Tbe ?pdy diaolalion of a Parliament in wliich the II use of Commons is so ' consUtutrd can on'y be averted by the summary disruption of tbe unnatural alliancw between Tories and Parnellites and the sabs'irulion of a league between the chastened Liberals and tho ex hi tan1 friend of Ireland. Tbero are already premonitions of such a transposition in the relations of the three parlies. The only party chief in the United Kingdom who can be entirely satisfied with tbe outcome of the contest is Mr. Parnell. Lord Salisbury has not suc ceeded in securing a Conservative plu rality over the Liberals, which, ineeed, bctoreiho elections bean, he never professed to hope for, and be has even failed in reducing th Liberal plurality over th5 Tories to the reasonably ex pfcted figures 25 or 30. . He has failtd.no withstanding tbe immense aid contributed to hi9 tupporters in British boroughs by the Iruh vote, and by th8 acceiaions from the Liberal upholders of the EstabliAi-d Churches of England and Scotland, wherever the party nom inee wai known to be infected with Radical opinions. But this is not the worst featnre of the situation from a Tory point of view, lno uonservative aeierminauon to chsat the Parnellites was disclosed too early and too plainly. It was laid bare on the Saturday before Vhe voting began .by the perfidious refusal to sus tain Mr. Parnell's candidacy a- Liver pool, and it was proclaimed with reck less effrontery, by the Tory newspapers, when tbe first week's returns held out the deiuive promise of a Conservative majority. It is now palpable to every e'ear-headed politician in the Conssrva tive rwnk3 that moit of the self-impor tant members of the present Tory Cabinet are blind leaders who, unless they give more heed hereafter to Ixrd Randolph Churchill, will plunge their party in a diteh. . . The Liberal., on their part, will have t,o be Ibanktul for small mercies, but Irishmen will scarcely forget that, even when smarting under a bitter, disap pointment. Mr. .Gladstone' and Mr. Caamberlain gave vent to no malignant or vindictive word. It is the pilotage of vessels in storms that is the ultimate (est of seamanship, and the two fore most leaders of tbe. Liberal party proved, by their declarations after the galling reverses of the first week's voting, that they meant to profit by the lesson which the ill-advised attempt to renew tho Crimes act forced Mr. Par nell to inflict. Mca culpa was the pur" p jrtot" Mr. Gladstone's protestations when he saw how the defection ofJiis former Irish allies had dislodged his ptrty from scores ul its traditional strongholds in England. He has shown himself, as Mr. Parnell foresaw would be the case, not less but more frirndiy to Ireland because of the sharp reprimand to which he ha3 been sub jected. . - Mr, Gladstone, in fact, can feel tbe pulse of his own party, and he knows that their transient disappointment will sot rankle in tbe masses of the English Liborali, btcause they see that their interests are essentially indistinguisha ble from those of Irish patriots That this is the spirit in which the. Liberal commander ' is prepared to face the siiirMii.n stems cleir from his publish ed warning to tha Tories toward the clr.se i f last wpek, that ihbir hopes of an organized and considerable secession from the Liberal ranks are vain, ; He knows that, while he lives, he will never be deserted by Lord HartingtOD, while bis radical lieutenants. Mr. Chamber lain and Sir Chailes Dilke, have has tened to affirm their willingness to fol low the ex-Premier in tbe most gener ous concessions to Ireland. ' - There are many other features of this electu beyond doubt the most im portant witnessed in the United King dom by tbe present generation, to which particular attention may be drawn hereafter. For the moment we content ourselves with marking the astonish ing completeness with which the faith t Frelind sr.' TrrLlsd'a fficUiU in .lbs I w a jh,w - generalship ft Mr. Parnell baa been Justified.; Not only have the assurances of the Nationalist leader been splendid fy crtn firmed j with; respect to the en largement of his party, but the specific issue of tbo struggle is almost a guaran tee of the ppedy triumph of his canse.
