' ' The Germans consumejarge amounts of uncooked pork, and often get living animals called trichinae into their blood, which cause the most terrible death. Americans draw in the perms of disease and death with every breath. fiialana. miasma, sewer gas and the thousand poisons in the air, in food and in water are at war with health and Ufa all the while. The blood that cir culates in human veins is composed of num bers of small corpuscles that resemble ani mals and when anything oisonous gets into the blood it becomes just like stagnant water, full of living animals that feed upon each other and upon the blood itself. And yet not oneiwrson in fifty is free from blood poisoning in some form. Every mo ment of the life, whether awake or asleep a million poisonous animals, invisible to the naked eye, are feeding upon the very elements that make and sustain life. These are facts they are solemn truths and they demand the most serious attention. These germs must be killed; they must be annihilated. But how! Prof. Austin Flint of BeilcvUc Hos pital College, New York, says: "The ju dicious use of alcoholic stimulants is one of the striking characteristics of progress in the practice of medicine during the last half century." while Dr. J. P. Gilbert of Lyons, N. Y. says: ''From my experience in the treatment of chronic diseases of a wasting and debilitating nature I have fre quently found it necessary, to advise the use of stimulants, and in my opinion Duffy's Pure Malt Whi key, for purity and other desirable qualities cannot be surpassed for such pur poses. Its action seems to be that of a pnre stimulant, with none of the inebri ating effects which are too often found in so-called medicinal whiskeys." When we consider the terrible amount of poison that is in the blood, and the misery and death it is causing, and when we realize that tts germs can all be driven out by a stimulant (not intoxicant) like Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey, Ave have cause for thankfulness that modern science is doing so much for mankind in removing disease, destroying its cause and bringing health and happiness instead of misery and death. Most of the leading people of the land are realizing the value of this Whiskey, and many whose prejudices have heretofore kept them entirely from the use of spirits are seeing its pure ana valuable qualities in warding off diseases and use it regularly in their homes. Ninety-five thousand employees are locked out or. 00 strike at present in the United Slates, causing a loss-to the idle men of fiot less than twice that many dollars daily. Two hundred thousand dollars a day may not seem a very large sum for that many men to .(rise daily, but when it is considered (bat in most instances there are no accumulated dollars to fall back on the loss must be very serious Nearly one-ball, or 39 TWO of ihene idle men-are tboso connected with the building: trades at Chicago and vicinity. There are 13 000 coke burn ers. 8 700 stove jiouiders. 4.000 furnace men. 2 600 coaf miners. 2.400 brewery employees and 24 000 miscellaneous workers idle. This is less, by more than on hundred thousand, than the nnmbernf men idle at the beginning of May. 1886. but tbe strikes of last May were only abort lived, while those of the present promise to be long contin ued Mr. Gladstone is out in a paper vig orously criticising Mr. Lecky's "His tory of the Eighteenth Century." in which he covertly defends the National League. In alluding to the Society of United Irishmen he says the society was instituted for the purpose of n formiDg Parliament by means of the union of Protestants and Catholics in a political body, without prejudice to religion. Subsequently, he says, under tbe force of circumstanoes the society aimed at the separation of Ireland from England at any cost. In the same paper Mr. Gladstone declares .that Mr Lecky fn his history has inconsiderate ly pilloried him for having proposed to abolish tbe income tax in 1874. and denies point blank the allegation of the historian. that the proposal was intend ed to bribe electors. ' In describing the proposal as a piece ot unequalled politi cal profligacy, be says Mr. Lecky ap p roaches much too near the business of tbe Judgment Day and rayeals hiiu3elf as wholly incompetent to judge tbe motives inducing the introduction of a proposal, tbe making of which was simply the fulfilment of a solemn duty Tbe New York correspondent of the Baltimore Sun says: "Every day adds tresh confirmation to the belief which has otteu been expressed in tnis corres pondence that Governor Hill -will not stand in the way of President Cieve T , - - ' I. land s nomination, provided the latter decides to accept a second term. He wouidbe willing to run lor President provided. Air. .-Cleveland decides that it would be best for him to retire, but it Mr Cloveland decides to run Govei nor Hill will probably be re nominated for Governor and -wait four years for promotion.. "There will be a united delegation trom this- State next year,1 said a prominent Democratic politician the other day 'The Demo cratic parly has passed tbe period, when it could be depended upon to make the Very mistake that would secure Repub lican victory. There is nj competition between the President and Governor Hill. In the very nature ot tbe case there could be none.
