We copy here frr m ih Herall that portion of the inler- v i f y wnicn relates io mr i k'hse from confinement at Fortress Monroe and fhe manner io which it wai brtui?ht abont. which is an follows: Mr. D.ivis and his tamuy are warm in their praiso ot the late J-hn Garrett, and c nfirmed statement. m'e before hiw he secured Mr. imprisonment, at W. Mr. Garrett's bis death, id Davis release from Fortress Monroe. which is as follows : Mr. Garrett s:ated that on one occa sion Mr. Il'jssull.a distinguished law er ot Wheeling., VV. Va.. who had ben in the. Baltimore Ohit Railroad Cmpans employ, and who had been del'Kat t the Charleston Democrat c National Convent ion, came to bis (lice at Camden Station and sunt in fitH card. At that titiie he was engaged with a large delegation, which kept Mr. Russell waiti s tor an hour and a halt. In time he went out to meet Mr , lius sell, who introduced him to a lady heavily veiled, who proved to be Mrs. Jefferson Davis.- Mr. Garrett apolo gized for keeping the party so long, wailing, and said it be had known the lady was present he would have been more prompt. Mrs 'Davis 'told Mr. (iarreit that she had just arrived f nun Fortress Monrce, where her husband was closely confined in a casemate, and thai unless he was released he would die She said she was informed thai Mr. Garrell had ureat influence with Mr. Stanton, and she wished him to sec the Secretary lor her. She desired Mr Garrell to trt) to Washington wi h ber. but Mr. Garrett icplied. 'N;'you had better remain here until I go first." She promised to do as requested arid e untitled with lite lale John b. dn- tins. Mrs Davis in her interview with Mr. (arielt laid betoiohim all the difficul ties she had to contend wii h to secure ber husband's release. Among other t nings she saitl Mr. McCulluch. lbe Secretary d tho Treasury, ou his way liom Fortress Monroe, had said that Mr. Garrett could count on him to aid ii tn in his fforls to obtain Mr Davis1 release.- Ml Garrett starteii lor Wash ington immediately, and upon his ar rival there called upon Mr. McCulloch, and alter staling the nature ol his busi ness told him that he intendatl to see Secretary Stanton about obtaining Mr. Davis1 release. Mr McCulloch was thuuderrilruck with amazement and aid it was preposterous to think of do itig anythin-r with Stanton. Mr. Gar ret t told Mr. McCulloch what Mrs. Davis had said about bis pro He red aid. which he attempted to deny or evade Finally it was agreed that they should go over and lay the subject bptore the Attorney General. Mr. Stansbury Upon their arrival at his office Mr. McCulloch was about to introduce Mr Garretl to Mr. Stansbury, but the lat ter stopped him by saying that he re, membercd Mr. Garrett very well, as they had met betore Mr. McCulloch then narrated the nature ot their busi ness, to which Mr. Stansbury replied that he had seen stranger things than that done, and could see now do objeo tion to the plan proposed. After talk ing ine matter over Mr. liarrett, con trary to the advice of his associates, said ho would go and see Secretary Stanton, who was at Jiome aick and, it was said, could Dot be seen by any one. lie told the gentlemen to wait for his return, as ho intended to see Stanton, who, they said would be furious at the mention of Davis' name. Mr. Garrett drove to Stanton's house, sent up hi card and was admitted. He found the War Secretary lying on a lounge, too id to rise up to greet him. . Mr. Garrell stated bis business, when Stanton grew furious. He told Mr. Stanton that two ol the Cabinet officers favored the release of Mr Davis upon his executing a sufficient bond, and President Johnson was waiting to. re ceive the order trom his War Secretary before executing it. Mr. Garrett plead ed for Mr. Dayis. whom beTegarded as a dying man, and stated that the country would applaud his act. Finally Mr. Stanton agreed that be would not raise any objections if the Attorney General arranged fot the re lease or Mr. Davis. Mr. Garrett iwent back to his waiting: associates, who were astonished at his success. The preliminaries were arranged, lie offered bail, and the character ot the oondsmen came up for discussion Mr. Gar ett proposrd Horace Greeley, who Mr. Stansbury agreed to accept, with others. Finally Mr. Stansbury said that Mr. Charles O'Conor, Mr. Davis1 counsel, would have to come to Washington to arrange the terms ot the ex President's release. Mr. Stansbury said be would not make any advances to Mr. O'Conor as ho had published some very objec tionable articles about the release of Mr. Davis and bad taken ? very high constitutionafgrounds on the subject, Mr. Garrett returned to Baltimore and reported to Mrs Davis the result of his trip, which gave her great satisfac tion. It was agreed that she should get Mr. O'Conor to come to Mr. Garrett's house on the following nieht. which she accomplished. Mr. Prescott Smith. who was a favorite with Mr. Greelev. was sent after him. and he came to Baltimore on the same niht. when the whole matter was arranged. Mr. Davis was taken from Fortress Monro tn Richmond, and by the efforts of Mr. Garrett was quartered at a hotel until the preliminaries for bis discharge were arranged in the United Stales Circuit Court.
