Harrington, who fell at the Custer massacre, married one of the most popular belles of West Point. His wife could not realize that he was dead and has resolutely held out that he will even yet return to her. She brooded over his absence so much that her mind became affect ed, ami in February, 1885, she very mysterionsly disappeared frxjm her home in Dallas, Texas. Nothing had been heard of her until her re turn the other day to her sister. For three years her luind has been a blank. She has wandered about from place to place, supporting her self by doing the most menial work. At last she seemed to regain her reason and the remembrance of her sister flashed across her mind. She wrote to her and stated her condi tion. Her sister went to her at once and found her in poverty and look ing as if she were GO years of age, instead of 37. She is now receiving the best attention and is in a condi tion to recover her mind. There has been considerable gos sip in social political circles inWash- ington of late over the reported en gagement, or rather re-engugement. of Mr. Fred Winston, of Chicago, to Miss Kleanor Calhoun, the actress. Mr. Winston will oe remembered as the gentleman who represented the United States at the Persian Court about two years ago. Miss Calhoun has been i member of the Drury Lane Theate Company, in London, for the past few seasons. An en gagement existed between Mr. Win ston and 'Miss 'Calhoun at the time th former sailed for Teheran. The gossip at that time was that the two were to be married at Constantino ple en route. Miss Calhoun, it ap pears, changed her mind at the last moment, and subsequently her en gagement to Mr. Will Hearst, son of'fhe California millionaire Sena tor, was announced by cable from London. The opfjosition of young Mr. Hearst's parents caused the breaking off of the affair. Now it is said that , Mr. Winston and Miss Calhoun have reconciled their dif ferences and that their marriage will take place early in the coming spring. : which is somewhat in excess of the j State's present annual surplus. 5 teii of ; lFIP oil, . Quick, reports that he "found the Gulf Stream current - setting to the westward one knot per hour along the Florida reefs until passing Carysfort." Thence, through the Florida Straits, until reaching lati tude 80 degrees north, the Eureka had a northerly current of one and a half knots per hour, and thence to Cape Hatteras she had no current at all, though the vessel was in the Stream. On leaving the Stream at Hatteras the temperature of the sea fell from 72 to 52 in a ship's length. This extraordinary reversal of the most powerful of ocean currents was due to the great anti-cyclone of high atmospheric pressure which was hovering over our Atlantic coasts at the close of that week. The northerly and northeasterly anti cyclonic gales swept the Gulf Stream back upon its reservoir in the Gulf of Mexico. But the effect of these gales was probably limited to the surface water and extended but a few fathoms downward, the main body of the stream, more than one hundred fathoms deep, maintaining its momentum. a Governor Lee, in his message,' was able to . congratulate the Virginia Legislature on the favorable ' char acter of the circumstances under which its sessions began. The recent decision of the Supreme Court of tfce United States sustaining the validity of the "Coupon crusher" Act of; May, 1887, has vastly improved the State's position fornegotiations with its creditors. Already a letter has been received from Mr. Win. L. Royall, counsel of the foreign bond holders, asking in view of the new situation created by the Court's de cision, a suspension by the State of legal proceedings, under the Coupon crusher Act, against persons who have tendered coupons in payment of taxes, in order that a new confer ence may be had to negotiate a settlement, the intimation being that the bondholders will, perhaps, take a good deal less now than they demanded in the conference of last April, when they insisted upon the State's recognizing a principal of $24,900,919 and an annual, interest charge of $922,505; .
