Lash, ami mother of Mrs. J. K. Gil mer, of thin city, ami J)r. V. A. Lash, of Walnut Cove, died at the latterfplaceTnesdavut the advanced aged of 84 years. Wilkes county is thus far ahead on the stiver ques tion. Mr. J. K. Mickey. f Salem, purchased two of the "forked hoof ed" animals up there last week that tipped the scales at -2.202 ami 2.010 pounds respectively. Ashevitle Cittern: A reunion of 'the survivors of the ICth X. . State Troops will probably be held in this city on July 4th next. Preparations therefor are now beiu mml. Information was received by tele graph on Thursday of the sudden death of Mrs, Turner, of apoplexy, in Washington City. She was a relict of the late Major Turner, the well known engineer of the Western North Carolina und other railroads in North Carolina. Asheville Sun: The residence of Dr. J. L. Carroll, on Merrimon Ave nue, was partially consumed by fire this morning between twelve and one o'clock. The tire, it is sup posed, caught from a defective flue in the kitchen. The kitchen and dining room and a portion of the main building was consumed, -ah the furniture was saved, though damaged by the removal. The build ing tvas insured. Asheville Sun: The probability is that Gen-'R. IL Vance, who is so popular and to much loved by the .people of the 9th Congressional dis trict, will be the next Democratic candidate for Congress. His friends thronghout the district, who are many, would delight to honor him again. Give us Robert 11. Vance for Congress a id Charles M. Sted nvui for Governor, and the Western portion of the State may be relied on to do iier duty in the next eam paign and election. Greensboro Patriot: The nt-rro, Meas. Martin, who cut his wife's throat lat Tuesday week, seems to have made his escape, as the officers have not been able to come up with him and there is no news of his -whereabouts. His ife, whose life lie trie! to take by cntting her throat, till lives and is fairly on the wav to recover. Mr. W. A. Thedeceaed was of a Tipe old uge and wiis univeial Iv admired by all who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. Durham Plant: In Hillsboro ear ly this morning lire broke out in Paucett's idiotj hop. The entire xnunre west of the Court House, ex tending from the Lattiuier old store to the oJd Pogue factory, was burn- ed. This iucludes about eight houses. They were all occupied. The losers were Laws & Sou, tin Khop; Faucett, shoe shop; Haves & Turner, saloon: ana Ueorge laws, furniture store. The insurance on the buildings was only $500. Ko in surance on stock. A great many good were saved. Charlotte Chronicle: In an almost obscure triangular plot of Pinewood Cemetery there is a newly-made mound apparently that of a child of ten years old. The grave is about six feet in length, and was decora ted with flowers when seen yester day afternoon, but the most notice abf and curious part of it Was a bottle half filled with medicine. On the bottle the druggist's name is blown, and on the label a physi cian's name appears. Also the di rections: 'Take teapoonful every Jialfhonr.' This seems a standing "slam" at the capabilities of the druggist and physicians. Quarterly Meeting. First round of Quarterly Meet ings for the Wilmington District oft A. A . Foster, formerly City Kditor of this paper, has been offer ed and has accepted a position on the editorial staff of the Messenger. Our neighbor is to be congratulated. Maj.
