POISONED WATER.
one of ide leading surgeons in tne Army
made tbo following characteristic remark:
' Water kills mere soldiers than bullets.-; Ills
meaning was that soldiers who drank, impure
water, died by disease in greater numbers
than those killed by bullets. The surgeon was
light. Impure water, especially at this sea
son, is a terrible cause of sickness and death.
Hut the public say, what shall we do? Ihere
is but one sensible thing to do, and that is to
purify the water by mixing with it -someiJilng
that destroys all poison or disease-breeding
germs, and nothing does this like pure wms
fcev. But is may be asked, where can I obtain
pure whiskey? Professor Henry A. Mott, saj s
-the purity of Duffy's Pure Malt WMsfcej id
absolute, and should commend It e nn
cst public favor." There are hundreds of fam
ilies that are drinking water const: antlj and
are kept in perfect health bysimplj mixing a
little of Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey each
B-lasi thev drink. It is a simple and sure pre
?S ve of Smer diseases and germ poisons,
and is endorsed by the best people in the land:

It is generally understood that
Mr. Fields, the well known Phila
delphia merchant, will be appointed
postmaster at Philadelphia, and
that State Senator Cooper will .get
the collectorship of the port. There
are practically no other candidates
for these offices, though the papers
of Mr. Leeds, who was Senator

still on file. The name of Mr. Leeds
is being mentioned for Surveyor of

said that matters are not in such a
shape as to warrant any statement
as to who will get the office.

Queen Victoria has commissioned
an American painter, Mr. W. G.
Bunce, formerly of Hartford, Conn.,
to paint a picture for her. This is
the first time, it is said, that the
Queen ever gave a commission to an
American artist. Mr. Bunce had a
friend at Court, and -was presented
to her M.ajesty at Biarritz. He im
proved the occasion, showed the
Queen a portfolio of skethes, insist
ed on her acceptance of one, and the
"incident concluded," as they say in
diplomacy, with a royal commission,
which is to take the form of a land
scape in the neighborhood of Biar
ritz. Cardinal Gibbons will shortly per
form the initiatory ceremony to
wards ordaining the first colored
priest in the United States by ad
mitting Randolph Uncles feo the
clerical state. The ceremony of the
tonsure, the act of cutting the hair
and receiving the robes of the
Church will take place at the Cat he
dral in Baltimore on the 21st inst.
The candidate is a Baltimorean, and
one of the first of several studentg
to enter St. Joseph's Seminary. He
is studying at that institution and
attending the lectures at St. Mary's
Seminary. If he is ordained he will
work among the colored people.
The only colored priest in the conn
try was ordained In Rome, and is
stationed in Illinois. St. Joseph s
Seminary was established to train
clergy for work among the colored
people. Heretofore ministers for
missionary work have been drawn
from England. The first two ordi
nations for this field will be made on
the 21st by the Cardinal. Roman
Ferrer, one of the candidates, is a
native of Spain, and has studied at
Barcelona, and the other, Michae
J. Heffemen, is a native of Phila
delphia and has studied in England.
Both have attended St. Joseph's
Seminary.
