The Princess, who is in her ninth year, has aiways been delighted to hear all her mother, Queen Emma, could tell hei about the baby king of Spain: and a day or two before her last birthday she, entirely of her own accord, sat down and wrote him a letter, in which, after giving him a list of her treasures, includ ing her big doll Pauline and her pet pony, she went on to tell him that some day she was to be a Queen, though she did not want to be one, one bit. She also said she supposed that little kings like toys as well as other little boys, and if her mamma would allow her she would send him the biggest Noah's ark, which had every animal in it, thatshe had seen at the Zoological GaiKens at Rotterdam, and others besides. Both the latter and the oiggest Noah's ark were sent to Madrid, and in due time the Princess Wilhel niina received from the King of Spain a little answer, written, of course, by his mother. In it he tells of an experience he had in mid ocean, while commanding the steamer Baltic, in 1873. He was eating din ner, when a servant whispered in his ear -that the v ssel was on fire. Without losing any time the Cap tain quietly arose and repaired to the deck, where smoke and flames were pouring in huge volumes from the forward ventilators. Several streams were soon played on the burning cargo, but without having any perceptible effect. The Cap tain relates what followed in these words: A the time she was run ning before a strong westerly gale and heavy sea. An idea suddenly flashed through my mind, and I at once determined to act upon it. I went up on the bridge, and, calling to all who were on deck, told , them to get under cover as quickly as possible. 1 immediately ordered the helm to be put to port, bring ing the sea nearly abeam. A tre mendous wave broke on board, fill ing the hatchways and flooding the deck? Tons of water poured down below, and, instead of black smoke issuing from the hatch, I saw a cloud of j3teain ascend, proving that the fire was under control. 1 kept the ship before the wind and sea, and set all handsj to work hoisting up bales of. cotton. In about an hour they reached the place where the tire commenced, and I had the satisfaction of seeing it very soon extinguished. TERRIBLE FOIIE WARNINGS. Cough in the morning, hurried or difficult breathing, raising of phlegm, tightness in the chest, quickened pulse, chilliness in the evening or sweats at night, all or any of these things are the first stages of consumption. Dr. Acker's Eng lish Remedy for Consumption will cure these fearful symptoms, and is sold under a positive guarantee by Munds Bros., druggi.- ts. Signals AmnngPrimitive Races. . R. Andree has lately been collect ing information as to the use of signals by primitive peoples, and the facts he has brought together are summarized in Science.' it ap pears that American Indians use rising smoke to give signals to dis tant friends. A small fire is started, and as soon'as it burns fairly well grass and leaves are heaped on the top of it. Thus a large column of steam and smoke arises. By cover, ing the fire with a blanket the In dians interrupt the rising of the smoke at regular intervals, and the successive clouds are used for con j veying messages. Recently attention has been call ed to theelaborate system of drum signals used by the Cameroon ne- igroes, by means of which long mes I sages are sent from village . to vil lage. Exploration basin have shown that this system prevails throughout Central Africa. Toe Bakuba use large wooden drums, on which different tones a e produced by drumsticks. Some times the natives "converse" in t ;is way for hours, and from the energy displayed by the drummer and the rapidity of the successive blows, it seemed that the conversa tion was very animated. The G-alla, south of Abyssinia hare drums stationed at certain points of the roads leading to the neighboring States. Special watch men are appointed, who have to beat the drum on the approach of enemies. Ceochi, who observes this custom, designated it as a "system of telegraphs.1' The same use of d -umsisfoundinNe (ruinea. From trie rhythm and rapidity of the blows the natives know" at once whether an attack, a death, or a festival is announced. The same tribes use columns of smoke or (at night) fires to convey messages to distant friends: The latter are also used in Australia. Columns of smoke of different forms are used for sig nals by the inhabitants of Cape York and the neighboring island. In Victoria hollow trees are filled with fresh leayes, which are lighted. The signals thus made are under stood by friends. In eastern Aus tralia the movements of - a traveler are made known by columns of smoke, and so was the discovery of a whale in Portland bay. - - Consumption Surely Cured. To the Editor Please inform your readers that I have a positive remedy for the above named disease. By its timely use thousands of hope less cases have been permanently cured. I shall be glad to send two bottles of my remedy FREE to, any of your readers who have consump tion if they will send me their ex press and post office address. Res pectfully. T. A.
