' f As is usual at. this season of the year there arc large supplies of wood coming in but it is all held at cold weather prices. Squire Millis offers for rent a store with dwelling attached, in a good location, on Vooster, between Eighth and Ninth streets. The conference between the com mittee of ladies from the Memorial Association and the gentlemen who were requested to meet with them, relative to the proposed monument to Mr. Davis, was held this after noon, at the Mayor's oflflee, at 4 o'clock, but the ladies especially de sire that no report of the conference shall be published until after it shall have been submitted to the Memor ial Association. The Fire This Morning. There was an alarm of fire 'this morning, about 5 o'clock, turned in from box 53. It came from the Caro lina Oil and Creosote Works, in the lower part of the city, and it was caused by an explosion of oil in one of the retorts. The flames burned fiercely for a while and the entire works vi ri threatened at one time, but. the fire department, which was early on the ground, fought man fully and succeeded in controlling the fire. The retort and building in which the fire originated were con sumed and also a part of the office but the other buildings escaped. The loss foots up about $1,200 and there was insurance with Messrs. Smith & Hoat wright, for $2,000-in the Providence, R. I., .$1,000 and $1,000 in the American, of Phila delphia. Prof. VanLwr'g Salesroom. We paid a visit yesterday to Prof. YanLaer's salesrooms for pianos and organs, on Red Cross street, near Fourth, and were surprised to see the large and handsome stock he has on hand. He has a number of in struments from ,the hands of the best makers and, in tact, he will handle none but the best. The Sohmer piano is by many consider ed as the best and these can be had onlv of Prof. YanLaer. Gur iancy fras especially taken by a magnifi cent grand piano in light mahogany that would grace any parlor or music room in the land. Among other things there is a unique in.-, strument, an organ, called the "Pneumatic Symphony," which can be played either automatically or by the keys. Prof. VanLaer will take much pleasure in showing his instruments to all who may desire to see them. - " " . For all derangements of the stom ach, liver and bowels take Dr. Pierce's Pellets, or Anti:bilious Gra nyles. - ME V City Court, Mayor Fowler disposed of the fol lowing cases to day: William Phinney, charged with disorderly conduct, was found not ffnilty and discharged. Maria Hall, was charged with al lowing her hogs to run at large in the street. In this case judgment was suspeded'on payment of costs Charles Walker was charged with the same offense but in his case judgment was also suspended on payment of costs. Jacob Johnson, drunk and down, was found guilty and fined $5 and costs. One case was continued. A Distressing and Fatal Accident. Avery distressing accident hap pened on North Fourth street this afternoon. A colored funeral pro cession was passing near the corner of Fourth and Brunswick, when a street car came along at the same time. As the car passed a little boy about two-years of age, tho son of Mr. W. A. Walker, who has a store at the corner of Fourth and Brunswick, ran in front of the car and fell and was run over hy the animals and almost instantly killed. The accident occurred about 4 o'clock hence we cannot givo furth er particulars. Mr. Robert Rowan was the driver of the car and he is deeply distressed. It is said that he is completely prostrated. An Innovation in Popular Prices. Ely's New York Comedy Company will hold tho boards at the Opera House for four nights and Christ mas matinee, commencing Monday evening, December 23rd, opening with the very funny musical farce coined j "Tom Sawyer" a dramati zation of Mark Twain's novel. They will present a different play each evening from their extensive reper toire which embraces some of the most popular plays of the day. All of those produced by this company are with elegant special scenery, novel mechanical effects, beautiful costumesand elaborate stage settings At popular prices 10, 20 and 1 30 cents, and seats can be reserved at Yates' without extra charge. A Puritan Evening, The ladies of the First Presby terian Church will give a very unique and pleasing entertainment at the City Hall to-morrow night. It is entitled "A Puritan Evening'' and one of its features will be the style and costumes of the Pilgrim Fath ers (and mothers, top, we presume. ) There will be a bazar in connection with the entertainment where fancy artisles and things suitable for Christmas will be sold. There will be refreshments and tea wjll be served by Puritan juaidens, every purchaser of a Cup of the beverage that cheers, but does not inebriate, to be presented wth a. cup and sau cer as a souvenir of the occasion. The directory of the Wilmington Library Association have it in view to enlarge the scope'and usefulness of the institution and with this end in view Capt. W. H. Bixby, a mem ber of the board and actiug man ager, has issued the following circu lar: v The Wilmington Library Associa tion is thinking of extending its present facilities by establishing a reading room for current periodical literature. If support enough is re ceived in this movement, the Li brary will probably subscribe to from 20 to SO, perhaps more, of the most prominent periodicals, treat ing of literature, fashions, arts and sciences, and it will probably place these periodicals at the disposition of readers in the reading room from 10 a. in. to 10 p. m. at the moderate charge of $3.00 per year, payable in advance. If you are willing to aid such a movement, please say so, and state in what way you will aid. If you think "you will probably subscribe under such circumstances, please say so. In any case you will assist this movement by mentioning the pub lisher's address and t he names of the ten magazines or periodicals which you yourself would most like to see and consult if you should become a subscriber. .
