He brings a statement, signed by Judge Buxton and many other leading citizens of Fayette-' ville, certitying to the good char jicter of the bearer, his enfeebled health, and the destitute condition of his large family, ' now rendered pitiable indeed by the withdrawal of their chief source of support. - We know this poor old man, Henry Ingrahani, well ; and we can conscientiously testify to his excel lence and worth. We know.' also that Samiiel Ingraham, the deceas ' cd, was a dutiful son, and that , to him the unfortunate family in whose behalt we make this appeal were chiefly indebted for the ineana of upp'rL We ask the people of Wilming ton to consider the circumstances under which Samuel Ingraham died ; the helpless condition of his por old father ; the bitter anguish .and painful destitution of his moth-, er aud sisters ; and see if they do not consider the case we describe one that appeals directly to their generosity. . COTTON SPECULA TORS. Wc learn from the Macon, Ga.; Journal, that the cotton speculators operating in that city have had flush times lately. AH 6f them have made more or less money, Vhi'e some have made independent fortunes. One buyer, who went ont from New York, six weeks ago, has made tli snug sum of $90,000. Another, who commenced buying "when the staple was down to 11 and 12 cents, has made $35,000; till another, $20,000 ; while the profits ot several more have ranged from $15,000 to $5,000. Thee are the margins given several days ago ; but if the lucky fellows jjave held on to their cotton until ; now, their piles have been still further iucreas By the way, we ( hear that'a merchant, living with iness' 'than ? a thousand miles of Wilmington, Jias een fortunate to' liiake some $12, , 0 on the dethroned monarch. It is hoped that some definite result may be arrived at in April Mr. Sotton's Evenings. Mr. J. P. Sutton, assisted by his talented wife, and Mr. Harry Howland, will giTe two en tertainments next week, which promise to be the pleasantest things of the kind that we have had for many days. The public, who have so often testified its appreciation to the talents of these individuals, need no assurances of their capacity to succeed in whatever they undertake. The first en tertainment will be given on Monday even ing, when we trust a full house will greet them. The programme is a good one, comprising the comic drama of 44 Delicate Ground; or, Paris in 1790," to Iks followed by the celebrated dagger scene from "The Wife," and conclude with the laughable burletta entitled 44 The Stage-Struck Chambermaid" in which the versatile Mrs. Sutton will appear in five different characters. Paintul. Accident. Wc regret to learn that Mr. W. B. Bartlett, known to our citizens through his conuestion with the contractor of the Hilton Rail Road Bridge, was the subject, on Monday last, of a very painful accident. , While watching the operations of some work men upon that structure, he fell from a scaffolding about six feet high, striking upon a large cross beam, and receiving severe, internal injuries, which have con fined him to his bed ever since. He was better yesterday, but still suffering. The Schooneb , Jacbin. -This schooner, recently towed into this port a helpless and dismantled wreck, has again assumed the proportions of a staunch, trim vessel, and will be ready again to try her fortunes' on the great deep so soon, as the readjustment of her running rigging is completed. Under the skillful hands of Messrs. Cassidey Bros., her lost . spars were promptly replaced, nnd she . is now, in every respect, as substantial and sea worthy a craft as when she left the stocks. Washington's . Birth-day. 'Tis said that on this day a noble, great and valiant patriot, one' George Washington, Gentleman, was born. His acts have ex sited the day into a national festival, but to celebrate it now seems , almost like sacrileere. Could the noble rebel have : " ... ... foreseen the present state of the Republic he labored to found, he would doubtless haye broken in twain the sword that severed the. tie that bound us to the mother country, ' ; ; : ( Thb 'Mails. The accident' on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad threw hft mails out of ioint. yesterday. The 8.30 B. M-raail did not . come in until 11 PM. The through Northern mail was oo time, but the connection at Goldaboror was missed -and; no -mails from : Raleigh - or poinU west .were, received, s This will ac count for. tha Absence in thrs issue or tue nrocpedinirs of the Convention, andl the winaimmeuhrbl Btafe iieWa. Some few there r were, some white 'livered "traitors, 'who' threw aloft the servile cap, and; bent the knee that thriftl might follow fawning." To them, probably, the day brings less pleas: urable emotions than to the true Confed crates, for no man likes to be reminded of bis own degradation. And 'some iherr the day with pleasure, but to the maioriti of bur citizens its recurrence brings recol lections that are Only sad. ' H Rail Road Accident. Ob Thurs day morning the mail train on the Wii raington & Weldon Rail Road, which left here at 5:00 A. ML, ran off the track about two mires south of. Rocky Mount. The baggage car; third class passenger, and one box car, were thrown off, tbejatter be ing considerably 4njured. No one was hurt, but the connection was lost at Wet- don-, and the down train, due here at 8:30 P. M., did not arrive until 11:00 P. M The regular through train arrived in time to make the Southern connection. The cause of the accident is not known, it be ing one of thoea unaccountable , occurren ces which sometimes happen in the can duct of rail roads. Miss M. A. B die. We clip the following paragraph from the Augusta ChrontcU and Sentinel : , ' Miss Buie, who will be remembered bv our Augusta readers as the soldier's friend during the late war, is again in our cityi She was robbed of some valuable property by the Federal soldiers in North Carolina, and has been compelled to put up her house and lot at High Point. N. C. for file. Sue has fixed no value upon this property, but will leave the amount to be raised to the generosity ot the people of the South, whom be served so faithfully; in the late Struggle for Southern Indepen-i dence. The price of a chance, however,' she has fixed at the low price of one dol-i lar, so that 'all can take a chance. Lists for this purpose can be found at the Globe Hotel, at Dr. Hatton's1 Drug Store, and Mr. C. W. iHersey's Store; and a large number of chances should be taken as soon as possible. The Lecture. A much larger assemblage i was gathered in Thalian Hall last evening, than the one which greeted1 Dr. Deems, on the occasion of his first lecture. His treatment of th; prolifiic theme, 44 Husbands and Wives," was ex ceedingly entertaining, and his remarks embodied much good advice to old and young, married and single. It was a mat ter of much regret to the audience that the lecturerj was obliged to cut short his remarks, in .order to depart on the 9:30 P. M train, his duties as Missionary to New Tork-compelling his presence there on Sunday roomie i rr-- A Worthy Object. The father. of Samuel i Ingraham, the unfortunate young man recently killed by the falling of the wall at the fire, is at present in this city, seeking pecuniary aid for himself and helpless! family, who have been thus suddenly deprived of their main support. The old man is poor, enfeebled and worthy, and the charitable cannot better bestow their alms than in assisting him. Proceeds - OFTnE"LErjTURE7- We have-been unable to ascertain the precise amount realized from Dr. Deems' first lec ture, for the - benefit of the . teamen's Friend Society. We regret to learn, how ever, that the; gross receipts; were-, only about $75, and the net proceeds not more than $50; f r"'- ' ' "'' ' Detained. Th steamship . W. P.
