We teuder our acknowledgments to the members of " No 3 String Band" for the Compliment of a serenade last evening, which was very inspiriting to our force, who were 'dragging out" on the President's Message. The music was excellent, and balls and parties in want of a good band should count No. 3 " in the ring." Drcnk and Down. A white man frou the country was discovered laying in the gutter in the street opposite St. James' Church yesterday, afternoon taking a comfortable nap. Fearful that he mi&ht take cold in such an exposed situation, he was given a softer and more, pleasant berth in the Guard House. When taken in charge by the police, the old gentleman seemed to think he had fallen into the company of friends who were going to stand treat," and never discovered bis mstak' until he had arrived at the quar ters designed fr hi in. A Runaway. Yesterday after noon, in front of the Pift oftice, on Nrth Water sireet, a horse attached to a dray, in which was a quantity of hoop iron, got frightened at something and dashed off at full speed in thedirectioii of Market street, strewing the iron in all directions and finally upsetting the dray. Water street is a dangerous place for runaways, as the street and sidewalks are so narrow and generally in such u crowded condition, that pedestrians have to do some tall Skedaddling" to get out of the way. Return of the Robeson Coun ty Pri80xers. Yesterday four of the Robeson County prisoners lately taken to Lnmberton, were returned to this city, hand-cuffed and under a strong guard. Their names are Ci lvin Oxendine, Hender son Oxendine Stephen Lowrey and Geo. Applewhite, all colored, and charged with the murder ot the late Sheriff King, of Robeson. It seems that their cases were not disposed of by the Superior Court held last week,, and are returned to con finement in this city to await their trial at the next term of the said Court at Lum- lerton. The prisoners were under the charge of Deputy Sheriff W. N. Gibson. Dangerocs. There ought to be, if there is not, an ordinance of the city prohibiting the carrying of more than one or two kegs of powder through the streets at one time and in the same , conveyance. In the most of cities it is an offence punish able by a fine of f 100 to be guilty of this thing. Yesterday morning, we are inform ed, a dray passed along Water street with as many as fifteen or sixteen kegs of pow der in it; that it was , halted in front of one of the stores, and while in that posi tion a person came along, with a lighted pipe and being curious to know what the kegs contained, stooped over and examin ed them, actually going so far as to knock the fire out f his pipe on the wheel ot the dray. ;A number of gentlemen witnessed the dangerous experiment and made excel lent time in getting away from that vicinity. Had a particle of fire come in contact with the powder, the destruction oi lite ana properr which would have followed is horrible to contemplate. Co u nt y Commissioners. On Sunday morning last a white boy by the name of Jos. W. J. Scott, aged about eighteen years, was brought to this city from some point in Brunswick county, by a colored constable, and lodged in the county jail for safe-keeping. The charge against him is that of murdering a small colored boy in that county a few days since, and the circumstances of the case, as far as we were able to ascertain them, are as follows: It seems that hemnd the colored boy got into a quarrel about some trivial matter, when the latter called the former some hard names, upon which he was told by Scott that if he persisted in such language he would shoot him. Suit ing his action to the words he seized a musket standing near, and upon the of fensive words being repeated he shot and killed him. The accused says he did not intend to shoot the boy, but merely thought to frighten him. Yesterday he was taken from the jail in this city and conveyed to Smithville, where ho will be confined until his case is disposed of by the proper tribunal. lioRD of Aldermen. And tncy further recommend to the General Assem bly the memorial of the'eitizens upon this subject in favor of such Court. Aldermen Arnold, Kellogg, Wilson, Rumley and Howe, being present, voted aye. Not present, and not voting, Alder men French and Servoss. . Alderman Kellogg gave notice that he would call for the report of the committee on the opening of Bladen street at the next meeting. The Board then adjourned. LATEST BY MAIL North Carolina in a Nutshell. Rev. Mr. Thackara is in Newbern. . .The Grand Catholic Fair will open in Charlotte to-night. The Standard says the U. S. The r ' Rutherford Christian Union says : . We are pleased to learn that a gentleman of high social standing , and distinguished reputation, in confederate annals, until recently : a resident of our village, has contrived a metre for measur ing water similar to the gas metre, and designed for use in cities where the waste of water is a matter of moment By this invention the quantity drawn from t the public r acquiduet ' by each ' family: can readily be detected, and the rates laid ac cordingly. ! The Journal of Commerce says: Rev. Father Clarke, a Jesuit, is expected in Newbern, on the 10th inst. He will prob ably remain five or six days, and will preach each day perhaps oftener. Mr. Clarke, it is said, will be the first priest of his order to preach in North Carolina. The Christian Union has the following: Still they come, and still they go! the Emigrant, wagons. Day to day, fornix months past, a steady pro fession of ponderous wagons, rickety wag ons, one-horse wagons, bullock wagons, cam, sleighs, buggies, omnibusses and battered ambulances, with the inevitable escort of haggard and poorly-clad men, women and children, dogs, colts and cattle have been winding theirway through our streets, over the hills, and through the mountain gaps, ''going West" from North and South Carolina; and the end is not yet! Doubtles many of these will s!op in the ri h counties west of the Ridge, but perhaps the greater number will pass over the l)rder, to populate, and build up our sister Tennessee. We would turn the stream in the opposite direction if we could; but as this is not possible, we only regret the loss of so many citizens.
