We returned last night fromafiye

The people of Henderson, Gran
ilK mnty, a pleasant and lively
town on the Raleigh; and Gaston
Hailroa.l, arc busily preparing forth
approaching Fair. Tho commodious
and elegant Floral Hall ,will be
completed in time for the exhibition,
..which commences on the 8th prox-

Cotton has supplanted tobacco as
the staple crop of lower Granville.
As elsewhere the cotton crops
of the Henderson section have suf
fered to some extent from drouth.
Gen. Cox told us on the cars that he
thought the crop in North Carolina
would fall short twenty-five per cent,
of the average.
"We noticed local improvements of
' imnnrtahee in - Henderson. 'That
place, it will be remembered, was al
. most entirely destroyed by finrin

Raleigh had no unusual excitement.
There were no conventions, no theat
ricals, no Legislature. It was rathfer

A Remarkable Incident. .
Dr. J. Francis King informed us yester
day of one of the most remarkable freaks
of the animal kingdom that .we have heard
of in a long time. The Dr. has a fine milch
cow, which has been astonishingly direlect
in the matter of rendering her due quota of
the lacteal fluid. In fact so remiss had she
become in this respect, frequently not giv
ing more than a half pint at a milking, that
Dr. -K. was about to dispose of her to a
butcher. Two or three days ago, however,
one of the servants was witness to a trans
action that solved the mystery. . The Dr.
has a pet dog, and the servant discovered
the animal in the act of sucking the teats
of the cow, (she reclining on the grass in
the yard at the time) just as a calf would
have done, the cow in the meantime evin
cing no annoyance, but rather indicating
that she took it as a matter of course. Since
then a watch has been kept on both the
cow and dog by Dr. King and others of
the family, which has led to the rather re
markable discovery that the dog not only
receives his daily subsistence from the cow,
but that he follows her wherever she goes,
even through the streets, she in the mean-,
time showing every affection for this singu
lar specimen of the canine species that
would be natural if he were her own calf. .

Sadden Death.
; Obien S. Davis, a colored man, aged be
tween 60 and 70 years, residing on Eighth,
between Church and Castle streets, was
found dead in his bed yesterday morning.
At the dinner table on Sunday he fell from
the chair in which he was sitting in a kind
of fit, and during the balance of the day
complained of feeling unwell, but his con
dition was not such as to 'create any alarm.
He retired to his room, at night and upon
his not making his appearance at the usual

As a remedy for Bronchial Affections and
Chronic diseases of the Lungs, nothing erer before
discovered equals Dr. Pierce a Golden Medical Dis
covery. The Culture of the Hair. Just as surelv
as a soil infested with Canadian thistles can be made
to produce fine crops of golden grain, the scalp now
sparsely covered with harsh, dry, unmanageable
hair can be madeproliflc of silken tresses. All that
is necessary to effect the change in either case is the
right kind of fertilizer. Leaving the agricultural
cnemists to determine now tne barren land shall be
made fruitful, we positively assert that Lyon's Ka
thairon is uneaualed'as a fertilizer and beautitfer of
the hair. Twnty-five years of success is the basis
of this unqualified statement During that time it
has been used by many millions of both Bcxes, and
the first instance in which it has failed to fulfill the
expectations of a rational purchaser has yet to be
discovered. It will not cause hair to grow on a var
nished gourd; but wherever the roots of the hirsute
fibers remain undisturbed it will cause them to put
forth new shoots, and in all cases where the hair nas
become thin it will increase its volume.
