tor. SOUTH CAROLINA. The Conservative " Convention KaU fles the Nominee of the Indepen dent Republican Noble Speech or Gen. Kershaw " '' : At ColamSia on Thursday the Con servative State Convention orgauized by electing the following' officers: President Simpson Bobo, of Spar tanburg; Vice-Presidents J. L. Man ning, of Clarendon; CR.' Miles, 'of Charleston; E. Scott Murray, of An derson; W. M. Shannon," of Kershaw, and E. & Hammond, of Aiken.". Sec retaries C: F. Jamie j and'J., J.' Hemphill. The subjoined Iutions reported Committeo were ted: preamble and reso by the1 Executive unanimously adop- Whereas, the Republican party, be ing in the majority ifii this State, is responsible for its government, and the Conservative citizens of the State having declared that ; if the Republi cans would nominate for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor men of their own party, of honesty, charac ter,': intellect and , competence, . the Conservatives would, refrain from op position to them: ' ' ' And, whereas, the Regular Nomi uatin Convention of the Republican party have nominated for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor men whose antecedents show them to be unwor thy of confidence, and whose success will insare the continuance of the cor ruption, dishonesty and party tyranny which has prostrated the State; And, whereas, the Independent whig of the Republican party has de clared its intention to reform the gov ernment of the State, and in pursu ance of this intention has made nom inations of men whose antecedents entitle them to confidence in their in tegrity and honesty, for which nomi nations they have asked the support of the Conservative voters of the State; '. :.- ;. ' ' ' And, whereas, we recognize that, in the present condition of the State, the necessity of checking corruption and procuring honest officials is para mount to alt questions of party poli tics or affiliations, and believing the opportunity afforded us of securing such reform will be in the success oi the nominees of the Independent Re publican party: Resolved, That it is the sense of this Convention, called to consider the necessity of making nominations for State officers in the approaching election, that no nominations for Governor or Lieutenant Governor in the approaching election be made by the Conservative citizens of the State. Resolved, That in the opinion of this Convention the Conservative cit izens will best promote their interest and the welfare of the State by giv ing their support to" the candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Gover-' nor nominated by the Independent Republican party. Resolved, That we adopt as the platform of the Conservative party" of South Carolina, "Honesty and Economy in tho administration of State Government." At the evening session Gen. J. B. Kershaw, of Camden, addressed the Convention in a speech that was listen to with intense interest and breath less silence, save where the controlled feeling's of the Convention manifested itself in loud and prolonged applause. Gen. Kershaw said that he had wit nessed the proceedings of the Con vention with heartfelt interest and pleasure. He considered it, from its harmony of action, the moBt surpris ing work in the recent annals of the State. I feel, said he, in-seeing the wise course of this Convention of the representative men of the State that Che Great Ruler of thedestinies of nations has laid His hand upon the perpetrators of these acts , of .fraud aud rascality which have ruined and disgraced the State of Sooth Carolina, to hurl them from their places of power, and place in their stead those who, from' their hori'estyv .integrity and moneyed interests in the ' wel fare of the -; State, were, entitled to a voice iin her affairs. J"teel this moment a degree. . of , hope and confidence i In '."the future , which has not inspired -me for many a long day. I feel that in your action to-day yon have been Divinely 7 directed to the only single avenue of escape from the accumulated evils which surround us. ; I feel that' while we may in; this action have ignored , and sacrificed many of , ,tbe. bright hopes that we have cherished, we have adopted that which-is the fiul'y. wise, practical, pol itic and safe course. In conblnsinn he said: If the gentlemen who com pose this Convention will devote their whole energies to the work they have this day began, I hope to see the people to South Carolina meet in this new hall,' hot to redress grievances, but to rejoice at their deliverance. ! ' ' ART DEPARTMENT. 1874. The illustrations of TEE ALDINS have won a world-wide reputation, and in the art centres of Eu rope it is an admitted fact that its wood cuts are ex ampler of the highest perfection ever attained. . The common prejudice 1 idlT yleldms to a m in lavor or Bteel-lates." is ruu- idly yleldmg to a more educated and discriminating taste which recognises the advantages of superior aridsttc aualitv with greater tfacility of production. The wood-cuts of TEE ALDINE possess all the del lcacy and elaborate finish of the most costly steel plate, while they afford a better rendering of the art ist's original. . ,f To fully realize the wonderful work which THE ALDINE is doiiig for the cause oL.art culture in America, it is only necessary to consider the cost to -the people of any other , decent - representations f the productions of great painters.: In addition to designs by the- members' of the Na tional Academy, and other noted American artists, TEE ALDINE will reproduce examples of the best foreign masters, selected with a view to the highest artistic success and greatest general interest. Thus the subscriber to THE ALDINE will, at a trilling cost, enjoy in his own home the pleasure and rehning influences of true art. - The quarterly ..tinted plates for 1874 will be by Thos. moran and J.D. woodward. , The Christmas iseue for 1874 will contain special designs appropriate to ths season, by our best artists, and will surpass in attractions any of its predeces sors. A '-x .'-.--- - '. - PREMIUMS' FOR 1874;. A" Every subscriber to THE 'ALDINE for the year 1874 wul receive a pair of chromos. The original pictures 'were painted in oil for the publishers of TEE ALDINE by Thomas Moran, whose great Col orado picture was purchased by Congress for ten thousand dollars.- The subjects were chosen to rep resent "The East" and "The Wert." One is a view in The White Mountains, New Hampshire; toe other gives The Cliffs of Green" River, Wyoming Territory. The difference in the nature of the scenes themselves is a pleasing contrast, and affords a good display of the artist's scope and coloring. The ghro mos are each worked from thirty distinct plates, aiid are in size (12x16) and appearance exact fac-similes of the originals. The presentation of a worthy ex ample of America's greatest landscape painter to the subscribers of TEE ALDINE was a bold but pecu iiarlyhappy idea, and its successful realization is at tested by the following testimonial, over the signa ture of Mr. Moran himself : Nbwabk, N. J., Sept 20, 1873. Messrs. Jakmj Sutton & Co. Gentlemen; I am delighted with the proofs n color of your chromos. ' They are wonderfully suc cessful representations by mechanical process of the originol paintings. - Very respectfully, (Signed) THOS. MORAN. These Chromos are In every sense American. They are by an original American process, with ma terial of American manufacture, from designs of American scenery by an American painter, and pre sented to subscribers to the first successful American Art Journal. -If no better because of all this, they will certainly possess an interest no loreign proauc- if by reason of peculiarwacilitie of production they cost the publishers only a trifle, while equal in every respect to other chromos that are sold singly for double the subscription price of THE ALDINE. Persons of taste will prize these pictnres for them selvesnot for the price they did or did not cBt, and will appreciate the enterprise that renders thix dis tribution possible. If any subscriber should indicate a preference for a figure subject, the publishers will send " Thoughts of Home," a new and beautiful chromo, 14x20 inches, representing a little Italian exile whose speaking eyes betray the longings of his heart.
