AN ELECTION FOR ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY DELEGATES TO A CONVENTION 'TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION WILL BE HELD ON THE FIRST THURSDAY OF AUGUST, 1875. THE CONVENTION WILL MEET A T RALEIGH ON THE 6TH OF. THE hiii.r.mvTra .(.j'PTPVRri? WILL UENEUJLL CLINGMAN DO THE STATE A. GREAT &ERVICK? The approach of : the hundredth year of our State independence and the passage by the late legislature of iv resolution chartering a Historical Society suggest anew the fact that North Carolina is still without a His tory. We speak deliberately but pre cisely, meaning that we are minus a great record of the splendid deeds we have achieved as a people. There are books on the subject, some cov ering particular J epochs, some - un finished, other . some : misshapen, lll-arransred. : clamsilv written none up to the requirements of a, brave and intelligent though modest' and unassuming people. , We say the events named suggest anew this fact of a popular want. Time and 'time again have we alluded to the subject. Indeed, we feared one while we had worn the callous reader's patience threadbare. Bui we love the old Slate and her grand traditions, her stately history and her present good too well to be a faint-heart in this endeavor. We shall persist in the good cause until somebody essays" the noble task to which he is invited by every consideration of State pride and high personal ambition. In accordance with this spirit we make a nomination, to which we feel that there. will be raised throughout .North Uarolina ana all out among her friends no whisper of objection, but on the contrary a full chorua of j .cordial and energetic approval. We request that ex-Senator and Gen. Thomas L. fClingmari shall devote himself for th necessary tinie to the composition of Z an elaborate though not necessarily voluminous ." History of North Carolina from the early voyages to the adoption of the Con stitution of 1S75." '; Gen. Clingman has the generarculture, the political insight and knowledge, the practical intellect, the rhetorical ability and the iudicial spirit requisite for the great work. Besides, he has tional reputation which would the book a broad introduction. -i. ana give The Dains-takinsr ' sreoloeist, the liberal scholar, the earnest orator and.states man, above all the proud North Caro- linianT. L. Clingman, is just the man to do the thing up brownThe neces- sitv for the work being done thor- " .. .... , ... oughlyj something as a Macaula; Stanhope, and a Freeman did for Eng land, is universally conceded; Cling man is yet in the vigor of "an elderly nrime if we mav be allowed 1 to choose our phrase and he could complish the task if properly sustained bv official countenance and aid:ani ; . . . by a liberal and enthusiastic pub lic sentiment. Will he undertake it? (Ian he refuse to do so erreat a service toilie people" who have in times past y so generously nonoreq mm anu wuo still respect ana esteem mm as oneoi the first of the sons' of the .State, if the spontaneous voice of. that people shall set him apart as the right man found at last to record the heroic deeds of strife and stake that gild the very tree-tops on our lofty mountains and make immemorial .. music in the leavy coverts of our lowlands. ONE L1TTLIT GBAIN OF GOOD, PERU1P1 If the Beecher filthiness produces such a reaction towards orthodoxy in religion 'and morals as the excerpt hereinafter madp woald seem to hint at as desirable, perhaps after all it may not beregarded oy posterity as :iu unmixed evil. The New York aSVj, edited by a 6cion of the old Pu ritan race. sav: " The revelations of the moral toue of Plymouth Church which this trial i making, are not of a sort to encourage us to believe that the style of Mr. BeecherV preaching and the quality of his teaching are such as to- invite . their adoption as moilelsby other ministers. " The terri ble old doctrines are better ihan his in their effect on men. In fine, do not think that Brooklyn would be in utter spiritual darkness if Plymouth pulpit should become silent. Yet we acknowledge the truth of whatever within reason may be said of the elo quence and aptness of Mr. Beecher as a platform orator." TUB PIIESS AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONTEMPT. Mr. Wilbur F. Storey, editor of the Chicago Times, has often offended the taste ' and even the moral senti ment of dissolute Chicago by the in decencies of his sheet, which is a sort of journalistic Bedouin. But his sen. tence to imprisonment by a. Judge on the charge of constructive contempt seems to have occasioned for him a sympathy to which he could never otherwise have laid claim and which certainly would not have beenexteidV ed to him under other circumstances. The whole press of the city irrespec tive of party condemn the sentence as harsh and unjust, and demand (that henceforward the judiciaryjshall bet ter respect the rights of the . pres?, which -is the people's: bhl wark. Storev Jias been released pn bail. .v-. BCL wjkrs, asicci. "A Reader" asks foi informati6ii which the New Orleans Times seepss unable o supply. If any, of "book-worms'! are better posted, our per-. haps they would do well toj publish what they know of the matter which is one ofsome literary interest. Here is the enquiry in the 'Tim'es v J jj ; - Among the earlier writings of "Bulwer, I find id a copy -of ' his' miscellanies an un- nnished tale called "Ziccu'f , 'ihe prfctace of the book an old edition informs) us that this tale appeared in one of the popular magazines of the day, inrwhich it wasrwrit-' ten.
