WILMINGTON, Xtae Latest on the Centennial. There was yesterday oh exhibition at the city Marshal's office a strange and mysterious freak of nature. It was an egg of rather a peculiar ' appearance the shell being very rough and - somewhat ' resembling stonej Traced around the surface in letters of antique shape were the words ' Mecklen burg Centennial May 20th, 1875." A view of the egg impresses one with the idcalbat he is looking upon a paper writing struck off by nature to prove the authenticity of the Mecklenburg Centennial It seems to be really an egg and rather an extraordi nary pne at ( that . A, Centennial egg U.is called And we were told it would keep-' frtsh for a hundred years. Probably an egg so fresh as that, would be hardly palatable. However that ia. not claimed for it-aS so far there .has been no opportunity of testing its peculiar properties in this respect If there was any, probability of J . its being'so, we should advise the cessatioiS r of the salt business immediately. How ever this egg was not at theCentennial, the means of transportation not being sufficient to get it there in time. One story, as told us, goes tha9: TbeegK was'prodaced lAJjk small country Village in "NeV Hanover county. It appears that the inhabitants of the village the day before the' 20th, were preparing to have a slice of the Centennial served up on the following day. jTho .roos ter saw how things were going "and sharp ened MpU sptksV napped bis' wings, gave a crow; and took; tho train ' for Charlotte. The identical hen thai laid the egg in qnes-f tion, was noticed strutting around the yard, as if listening attentively i& several spread eagle speeches,. wiUi decided . disposition to hurrah for UCenteanialj beegg j-aa laid shortly afterwards. We learn from a private letter-received from Fairfield, Hyde county that an extensive i'rad almostthroujjhout IlielcoVlty last week.1- In- some sections' the sun was hid for three days by the smoke. Ashes and cinders were borne ia the air tea milfes and pieces of bark, three inches long were found-, eight miles from the immediate neighborhood of the fire. V In some places the smoke was so thick that rpersons were compelled to crawl on, the. ground to find their way.( The entire woods were in flames. The tetter, gives no iestimate of 4be extent of the damage. - Iff ' Stonewall Seeletr. Wilson.
