Colonel Alston en deavored to avoid the collision, but when forced to take a position of de fence he appears to have borne him self with high courage arid coolness. For a brave man to be forced to lose his life, or take life at the bidding of -a bully,' is painful and shocking. It is only two weeks ago that Colonel Alston published a letter in the New York Tribune in defence of South- ern Bciety. He insisted that life and preperty were safe in Georgia. He bassoon fallen a victim to that law less spirit that prevails unfortunately in the South as ' in the North. It is the Bams spirit that sent Jim Fiske into eternity, and that makes the Northern .papers records of crime. Colonel Alston had been an editor for years. THE LEGISLATURE. We hear that our friends of the Hibernian Benevolent Society, con trary to their usual custom, will ' dispense with a public celebration of the day -this year, out of respect to too memory of Capt. I. B. Grainger.for several-years the beloved President of the Society, and who still held that position at bis death.. The members of the Society will meet and proceed to St. Thomas' Catholic Church, in regalia, at the usual hour, where appropriate services will be held and a discourse delivered by one of the clergy on the life and services of St. Patrick, which will be the extent of the celebration. This course, we learn, has been decided upon by the committee hav ing the matter in hand. Maror'a Covrc Fanny Gore and Charles Dabbitt, both white, were arraigned before Acting Mayor Bowden, yesterday morning, on the charge of acting disorderly in the j neighborhood of Thompson's Alley north pf the W. .& W. Railroad, about 12 o'clock on Wednes day night. The evidence ' went to show that Dabbitt had been breaking up Fanny's furniture; that she started out to find a po liceman, and that when she came up with one of these functionaries she aad D. were both having quite a "stormy session," and were consequently both taken into custody and locked up. The woman was dis charged, and Dabbitt ordered to pay a flue of $5 or be confined in the city prison for twenty days. LecUlatlve Itoeala.
