Tourgee made a hit in preparing his political stories (i. e., lies) for the Presidential year. Anything that iojured the Sooth and kept alive the embers of discord and strife was sure to be devoured most readily in any part of the North where Radi callsm prevailed. There are a mil lion or two of people in the Northern Slates who are absolutely ignorant of ail that pertains to the Sooth. They have a much more, t accurate knowledge of Central Asia or-Cen- iral Africa than they hare of the Southern States of the Union, "they otly know us through lying corres pondents and novels that are designed to caricature our people. So Tour gee made a success when he sought the North for the sale of his literary wares. The demand for "A Fool's Ei rand" has been phenomenal. It has sold simply because it was sup posed to bo inimical to the South and travestied our people. It is not claimed among the intelligent critics of the literary centres that it has any special literary value. Indeed fume have rather damned it outright, aud yet it has sold something like "Uncle Tom's Cabin" sold, and all because it was a somewhat vigor ous, and, it may be, ingenious assault upon a people whose money he pock etedy whoso characters he could never understand, whose social -circles he could never enter, and whom he haled because they knew him quite thoroughly. He came as an adven turer. Daring the mighty -upheaval consequent upon the war, when soci ety was shaken and institutions were uprooted, the sly, cute, able carpet bagger was thrown to the surface, and he appeared as one of the selected fortonates who were to wear the Judicial robes and hold the Courts of North Carolina. Knowing but little law at first this North western carpet bagger learned fast, and but for his unfortunate principles would have made a creditable Judge. When he visited Yancey ville, Caswell county, to hold his court be boarded with a negro. His' instincts were low; his traducing the people upon whom he had been j forced was .an offencej ho was not. content to con Bp ire against their! prosperity and happiness, but . ho used his faeile and acrid pen to degrad'e and slander the white pedple of North Carolina. He told the North era people that twenty-odd Quakers had been browned in one pond wlien it was alia out of the whole cloth. And now TojOTgee ia having his re venge. - W never read any : of hig books. The le gality of the naturalization papers referred to was affirmed by U. S. Judge: Blatchford, a Republican. So it is Johnny Davenport's opinion against a Federal -Judge's : opinion John Kelly became indignant, and advised publicly all naturalized citi zens interfered with "to knock down" any Supervisor who. undertook to re tain all certificates after being pre sented at the recristrv places,, It ia estimated that the number who are interfered with by: Davenport Is full 10,000. The lawyers of Mr. Kelly advise a milder course. They re commend to have recourse to the courts, and, to , lhat end, Judge Blatchford is to be requested to hold open court during registration aud onv election day. They also recommend that U. S. District Attorney Wood ford (a cantankerous Iladical) be considered as primarily, responsible fpr any . violations of the rights. of naturalized citizens. : Bat Davenport is not to be, de terred, lie has issued a very em phatic circular- :U" hia , auho rflirtal.es, assuring them that they -must-not be intimidated in the least, as "the laws of the United States relating to elec tions will be enforced, peacefully, it is believed, but forcibly, if so it must be." :'ilil ;MiliW He does not address his orders 4o tbe Democratic supervisors but to tbe Radical ones only.
