J. Gordon, the victim of the terrible accident by shooting on Tuesday last, took place at Si John's Episcopal Church, yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. Dr. Carmichael officiated, assisted by Rev. Dr. Watson, bishop elect. The body was received at the door of the church by tbe Vestry of St. John's, headed by Rev, Drs. Carmichael and Watson, and the pall bearers, and the solemn procession escort ed the remains to the chancel, where the services appropriate to the sad occasion were conducted. The attendance at tbe church was very large, and included Stone-, wall Lodge No. 1. Knights of Pythias, of which deceased waa a member, and several members of Germania Lodge No. 4, by whom tbe body was escorted to its last earthly resting place in Oakdalo Cemetery, followed by a large number of the mourn ing relatives and friends of the estimable young nun, whose sad fate all bemoan. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: C. D. Mallett, C. M. Stedman, A. II. Greene, R. W. Hicks. T. D. Meares, M. S Willard. F. II. Darby, E. G. Par male. The jury .of inquest called by Coroner David Jacobs, consisting for the most part of old acquaintances and friends of tbe de ceased, met and viewed the body yesterday morning; the verdict being that deceased wall") .when we .may expect a charming presentation of another illustrious Virgin fan, who was in his moral qualities thean tipodes of Randolph and infinitely his su perior, and who was a military genius of a very uncommon type. Mayor Hall was still busy, yesterday col lecting money to buy wood and securing donations of provisions for the benefit of the suffering poor. He informed us that he was meeting with very gratifying suc cess. We noticed a large wagon loaded with provisions starting out on its rounds yesterday morning, and were led to the pleasant reflection that many a sad and aching heart would be made to rejoice and feel glad during the day. It is amazing how much good can be done in the world with a very little effort. The great trouble now is that wood is rather Scarce. Cannot some be sent in on the railroads. KesnJts oftheCoM Snap. A private letter from Laurinburg states that two or three persons were frozen to death in the neighborhood of that town du ing the recent cold snap, and that the se vere weather also proved fatal to quite a number of horses, cattle and other stock. Th'e merchants in Laurinburg lost conside rably from the freezing of canned goods, pickles, etc. We learn that some of the mills here, and at Chadbourn and other points, suffered no little damage from tbe bursting of pipe.
