Gordon, a well-known insurance agent of Wilmington, met with a sudden and untimely death yesterday, while gunning at his farm in the eastern limits of the city. The particulars of the aad affair, as far as they could be gathered, are as follows: Mr flordon Drocurad a dnuble-b&rrel brocn-iodinj ,hot gun from Air. Geo. About half-past 4 o'clock in the afternoon, however. Fuller Hug I gins, a colored man,' passing through the premises, discovered the body of Mr. Gor- don lying at the draw-bars of the fence that separated the two fields. He at once gave information of the startling discovery and the body was removed to Mr. Gordon's residence. From the position of the body when found it was apparent that Mr. Gor don was killed while getting through the tars The UDDer bar and I . . bars were in position, will the two lower with the body of the unfortunate man resting upon the latter. face downwards, the stock of the gun be tween tbe feet, and the barrel beneath the body preasioir sirainst the breast. Death must have been instantaneous; the charge from the gun entering just below the chin, tearioz away the face, the brains and tbe upper portion of the skull. rr r The sad occurrence is a great shock to the many friends of Mr. Gordon He was a young man of admirable qualities gen 1- 111. 1 l; , 1 ue, amiao.e ami cxceeuiugiy popular; uuu- ducting a prosperous and growing business and enjoying the happiest of domestic re- lations. No young man has died here, within our recollection, who seemed to enjoy the respect and confi dence of the community in a higher degree. Joseph Jefferson. The following complimentary notice of Mr. Jefferson's performance at Cincinnati we clip from an exchange: It is almost enough to say that Mr. J ef ferson gave a very fine impersonation of "Fighting Bob Acres." in Sheridan's comedy, "The Rivals." He has long been established as one of tbe leadiDg comedians of the stage of to-day one of the few real actors in plays of real merit; and it is mat- ter for public congratulation that after such Ion8 on tnesiage ne maintains mm self so well. Mr. Jefferson was admirably supported last night; or rather we should say that all the characters were admirably taken. It takes more than one man or woman to play one of Sheridan's comedies. Mrs. John Drew, as "Mrs. Mamprop," was simply all that could possibly be-asked, and Rosa Rand, as "Lydia Languish," commended herself as an actress of un- common grace, intelligence ana artistic strength. Frederic Robinson made a splendid "Sir Anthony," and R- L. Down- ingas "Csptain Jack Absolute" made a handsome appearance, and played so as to ... - . . . i take a considerable share or tne nonors or the evening. Charles Plunkett as "Sir Lucius OTrigger," A. F. Taylor as "Falk land," Percy Shelly as "David." and Thomas Jefferson as "Fag," were severally .J - - t -.1 1 11, T Hli.n T nu cotiecuveiy eawaieu. c.no ''Lucy" had the least to do. out aid her lit- tie well. A fine old comedy like "The Rivals." played by a strong company like that now at the Grand, sends the old play goer back, in his mind, to the better dra matic days of tbe past, and makes him want to kick himself for ever havins- tole rated by his patronage the trash of later days.
