' He drew out the other package and discovered that he had by mistake taken the morphine for quinine. A physician was at once sent for, but he died the next morning. Goldsboro Messenger: The po lice of our tdty are alt "diked out" in their new .uniforms, which are the handsomest they have yet had. The two colored boys who threw the brick into the proces sion last Thursdaymight were tried before : the mayor last Monday and sent to jail for 30 days. We regret very much to have to announce the-death of Geo. W. Ward, Esq., the' efficient chairman of the Board of County Commissioners in Duplin county. He breathed his last on Monday night at his honiein Bockfish township. Fifteen fine race horses have already been entered for races at our fair next, week, and, of course, others will be entered nearer the opening. - Fite trotters from a distance came in on the freight last night, and are occupying stables at the grounds. . Johnson applied for a dissolution of his pastoral relations with Nutbush and Hen derson churches, which, after full discus sion, was granted and he was dismissed to join the Presbytery of Lexington, Va. A. Elliott & Co.. lo cated on the line of the North Carolina Rail road, between Seventh and Eighth streets, is about completed, and the manufacture of furniture will soon be begun. The factory is a large three story frame building and is quite an imposing structure." It was built specially for the manufacture of furniture. The Chairman of our Democra- tic County Executive Committee, Mr. J. W. King, requests all Democratic Clubs in the State, intending to participate in our celebration on the 20th, to come in a body Chickens were plentiful in mar ket yesterday. We counted twenty coops . containing an average of thirty chickens in each, in front of one store; and a little fur ther on we counted eight coops in front of another store. ., Speaking of late fruit, a gentle man informs us of a fig tree at Mr. Rich ard Steljes place on Masonboro Sound, which had shed all its leaves, but from which was plucked three ripe figs, leaving on it forty green,ones.
