The condition of our roads is a disgrace to a civilized people. At best they are bad, at worst they are impassable. The term high way as applied to them is a mis-' nomer. In many places the road consists of three ditches: two small ones on each side and broad, deep one in the middle.? How deep the wheels . will sink in mud de pends on .the weight they carry. Is Ihere no remedy ? Is it another "dog" question that our legislators are afraid of ? Let our people demand an improvement. They cannot afford not to have it. It costs too much to use these miserable ditches. We must mend our ways. Pittsboro Home. 1 There is some f talk about proposing amendments to the State Constitution. It any are proposed, let one be that a member of a Legislature shall not be eligible to an office created by the Legislature of which lie is a member. A law of that sort is needed and would promote good, unselfish legislation.- Charlotte Democrat. "Since the election the New York World has posed as the organ of President Cleve land, in fact the Democratic mouthpiece.' It is a sprightly paper, avast improvement, on the old concern. But it is no or gan. Under the ! present r management it advocated negro equality. .Under its pre sent management and no looser than last week it denounced all of those Democrats who voted for the Morrison Tariff bill. Every North Carolina Congressman is an individual whom the World regards with loathing. It has praise for only those Democrats who voted with Randall against tariff reform. We say to the Democrats that in some things it is Democratic; in others it is mean, stinking, undemocratic.
