N. Y. Journal of Commerce, Jan. 12. The demand in domestic sorts is light, and the movement can be classed as of "hand to-mouth character. Many of the trade say, by action if not by word: "We have odds and ends of stock, and we pro pose to close out before entering into new transactions." At the South there is quite a lively "racket." Those who sold in De cember for January delivery are said to be getting badly "squeezed, as contracts are now being filled at ic higher than prices current in the former-named period. It is said that the present advance will undoubt edly call forth free offerings, and mills are gettiDg ready to run on full time. Foreign styles of high grade are fairly active; the former for home use, the latter for export. The following are the quotations: Carolina and Louisiana, full standard fair. 31a34c: goon, ot(gdjc; prune, 44ic; choice, 5 5c; fancy head. 5J6c; Rangoon, duty paid at 44,c; do. in bond at 2i2c; Patna, duty paid at 4,4$c; do. in bond at2j3c; Japan (new crop) at 55,c; do old crop at 44,c; rice bran and meal at 7595c per 100 pounds. For spirits turpentine there has been a brisk demand, and sales so far this week comprise 200 bbls at 38c, 50 do for 38c, and 100 to at 38Jc for Southerns, and 39c for New Yorks. At the close there were few sellers helow 9Qr No clear statement is given for the advance, but it would seem that available supplies are pretty well concentrated, and holders anticipating an increase in buying orders, quietly worked the rate up to 39c. No marked change at the South noticeable, though it is said that business has been transacted there above market rates but kept quiet. Tar and pitch are selline mod erately at previous rates. Rosins have not moved freely and the market is without feature, beyond the fact that previous rates continue to rule. Absolutely Pure.
