Ihere wns a young fellow named Cholmonde-' ley, VVho in face and in figure was colmondelcy. He was married one maughan To a lady named Vaugban, But they quarreled and always sat glolmonde ley. There was a young man of Bordeaux. Who called to his horse and said "WheauxP But his horse ran awcigh With a terrified neigh. And is probably still on the geaux. There was a young poet in VVemyss Who cried, "Oh, how awful it semyss. When asleep lato at night. Lovely poetry to wright. And, awakening, find it's but dremyssl" Amusing Journal. One Kind of KallroadVass. "Tho postmaster general 6J,the Unit td States has at his command-a greater liumber of railway jnileagesjfreo of cost than perhaps any man in tio world," BaidL. N. Tinsk-yY H railway passenger conductor. "My igiiorance of this came very nearly costing me my; job a few years ago. "Over in Illinois ono midnight tho through train, of which I had charge, was flagged at a little way station, and a red faced man climbed aboard tho front passenger coach. The stopping of my train at that hour of the ldght made mo mad to begin with, and I was in no good humor when-I approached my new passenger to collect his fare. Then, when he shoved at me a much handled piece of pasteboard, signed by tho post master general and commanding in im perious lauguago that the holder bo car ried froo of charge on all trains carrying United St-ates mails, I lost my temper completely. I was so mad that I would listen to no explanation from him, be causo I considered him either a train robber or an impostor and made him pay his fare in tho coin of the realm, for which I gave hirn a receipt. "I soon hoard from my mistake after I reached St. Louis. The postoflice au thorities and the railway people camo down on mo like a thousand of brick. I learned from them that my midnight passenger was a postofHco inspector, and that every man in this service is provid ed with a card from the postmaster gen eral commanding the conductors of all railroad trains which carry mail to pass the bearer free. Tho name of no rail-, road company ur official appears on tho card, but the holder of it can travel on any road in the United States as far as he wants to go without paying a cent " St. Louis Republic. Metaphorically Speaking. A rural poet said of his ladylove, "She is as graceful as a proud lily, while her breath is like an armful of clover. ' ' Ai American poet wrote a eulogy i' Washington, "whoso glorious life should compose a volume as Alps immortal, sjwtless as its snows. The stars should be its type, its press tho age, tho earth its binding and tho sky its pages. " Truly some American poets go in for marvels of metaphor. A schoolmaster, describing a money lender, says, "Ho servos yon fn tho present tense, he lends you in tho con ditional mood, keeps you in the subjunc tive mood and ruins you in the future. ' ' A closo observer of human nature re marks, "Time marches on with the slow measured tread of a man working by tho day." A French author is charged with the prediction that France will throw herself into tho arms of the liberating sword This is not so bad as tho Democrat's speech, "We will burn our ships, and, with every sail unfurled, steer boldly into the ocean of freedom. " New York Dispatch. Mexico'?. Fans. In Mexico fans were used long before tho conquest, and when Montezuma heard that the Spaniards had landed and werO about to visit him ho sent for goldsmiths and lapidaries and ordered, among other gifts which were to bo of fered to Cortes, two feather fans, orna mented with a sun and moon of highly polished gold. Like tho Japanese and most other ancient nations, the Aztecs evidently considered the fan an emblem of authority, for they generally placed it in the hands of Ometeuctli, god of paradise, and of Totec, the military dis ciple of Quetzalcobuatl. New York Post - Watchmakers. Tho term "watchmaker," as it ap pears upon the signs of small shops all over town, long since ceased to be a truthful indication of the business trans acted within. Most of the watches car ried by Americans arc made at great factories, and most of the so .called watchmakers of the little shops are merely watch carpenters. Doubtless the making of a watch would bo as much beyond tho power of many of them as the making of a shoe would bo beyond that of the man that passes his life in making only heels. Philadelphia Press, Tho migrating instinct is uncontrolla ble in birds that have it at all. Geeso hatched from the eggs of tho wild vari ety, though they have had no opportu nity of learning, tako wing in tho fall and fly off to the south. If thoir winga bo clipped, they will walk off as fast and go as far as they can. Peking has an estimated population of 1,800,000 and 15,000 police. The signals of the police of Peking are made by yelling from station to station until the news reaches headquarters. Tho sta tions are within earshot of each other. Coolness in warmth, warmth in cool ness, dark with light and in everything, and, above all, contrast that is the ideal. To bo cool, a man needs to be cool. To bo cool, a woman needs only to look cool. Trees from which coffin wood is taken In Tonquin are mined instead of being taken from the living forest.
