Gowns Designed For Yachting, Boating; and Out of Door Occasions In General. One of the secrets of Parisian success in dress is the designing for special occasions of costumes with distinct features harmo nizing with their surroundings and the general background against which they are likely to appear. For the French and English racing and regatta seasons every - STYLISH REGATTA DRESSES, thing most attractive in the fashions, the prettiest styles, the most novel features that have been evolved from the minds of active and ambitious modistes since spring called forth their first efforts, are selected by them from the prevailing modes and .utilized, together with the fresh inspira tions of the occasions. English modistes, too, furnish no greater successes than in their gowns for yachting and boating, as witness two now and extremely elegant regatta dresses. One is of plain white serge with white vest, sleeves and aouavo and rovers of pale bluo silk tho samo shade as tho sash. Anchors are embroidered on tho yoke of tho vest and on the sash ends above the fringe. The stylish whlto felt hat is trimmed with black and whlto striped silk and jetted crow quills. Tho second dress is in a dark electric bluo diagonal cloth, mode with short double breasted bodice, fastened with large pearl buttons, and showing a folded sash of white silk at the waist; the doublo revers are of tho bluo cloth, and white watered silk; hat in white leghorn trimmed with white rosettes and white wings.' " Yachting gowns are more dressy than heretofore, so that their usefulness is not so strictly limited to their original purpose. The round waist and blouse waist models receive f oshionablo approval quite as much as the familiar jacket styles, although the reefer jacket continues in great favor, combining, as it does, style, comfort and convenience. Serge, duck,, heavy linen, galatea cloth, and, latest of all, colored piques appear in these suits. Buff is a new shade of the latter, but, some delicate greens, helio tropes and blues are all very attractive. The spotted piques are pretty, particularly one example with a ground color of palest bluo, spotted with block. Frocks For Tennis and Golf. Tennis suite vary little. A writer in tho New York Herald is convinced that a smart tennis dress is an impossibility for any would bo crack player. The girls who stand about tennis courts looking cool and neat and exceedingly smart in their tennis costumes aro not the ones who go in for a record. Tho best tennis dress is a plain skirt and loose flannel waist, with as little underclothing as possible. Golf is a more becoming exercise,, accord ing to the authority mentioned, "because it is not so continued in exertion, and the costume can accordingly be made with more regard to the wearer's figure and good points. The smart red coats ore ex ceedingly chic, and although tho regular costume is merely a skirt and waist it i -so decidedly different from the tennis as to be very marked. Golfing capes aro capi tal things and are made up in tweeds and cheviots. They are of reversible material, showing either a pretty self colored groundwork pattern in some way or one of the orthodox Scotch clan tartans. An exceedingly pretty one is of dark fawn cheviot, doubled with navy blue, dotted with white and made with a little upper capo. These, liko tho Inverness and Glen garry capes, form part and'.parccl of every thorough summer outfit. Dress In CrlnkledlCrepon. No woolen fabric is nowttn higher favor than crepon. A pretty creation of the modiste, designed more especially for the races, but of general utility for tho sum , mer, is in crinkled crepon. It combines two shades of gray with side rollings in moire, silk describing ser- A GOWN FOB THE RACES. pontine folds drooping from the waist. This corn runs two quarts more to the bushel when measured on the ear than any other. Four years aeo Capt. Snow had only four grains of it. This year there is at least 25,000 bushels of it raised in this section. Newbern Journal : Mr. Mark Morton Ipock died at his residti.c? in this city on the night of Friday, Septem ber 6th, of a complication of kidney trouble and malarial fever, after an ill ness of about three weeks. He was born September 30th, 1860. and conse quently would have been 34 years of age the last of this month. Martin County Sun: During Court week we have talked with promi nent men .from all sections of the county, and they all report the Demo cratic party to be in splendid condition. Many of the Populists have seen through the teaching of their leaders, and bow thev have been sold outoto the Radicals, and will in the future give their support to the Democratic party.' - Shelby Review-. Last Friday the town was crowded with wagons bringing monazile from all parts of the county here to ship. They shipped over 40,000 pounds, and received nearly $3, cash. This monev is distributed in all parts of the countv. and helps all busi ness. Monazite mines have been found all over the county and new ones are being developed evety day. The fine quality sells for six cents per pound, and the inferior quality brings five cents per pound. It is found along-gtde of creeks, branches, etc., and will, after some time, come again at the same place. Concord Standard: The slayer of Mart Misenhcimer. who was convict ed in the January court of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in the State prison, is dead. Last week Alex. Barnhardt, seeing what he regarded an excellent oppoitunity to escape from one of the penitentiary farms in eastern North Carolina, broke and ran. He was about beyond shot reach when discover ed He refused to hear the guard's warning command up went the rifle and Alex, fell face loremost. The shot was a true one Alex, died inside of fif teen minutes. Danbury Reporter: Mr. S. D. Ciomer, who lives near Walnut Cove, whiie working in his tobacco field a few days since, found at the root of a tobacco stalk something in the shape ot a ten dollar piece. Searching further he found other similar pieces and three pieces of silver, which upon examination proved to be British gold coin of the value of about $12 The latest date on any of the coins is 1737. How did it get there? There is an old tradition that during the Rev olution American troops cut through the forests a road which led directly past the field in which the coins were found. Another tradition is that it was Corn wallis' troops who cat this road on their march from Guilford Battle Ground and crossed Dan River not far liom Hair ston's Ford. The supposition is that some soldier in one or the other of the com mands either lost or hid the money.
