(By Wire to the Mornins Stai) Delaware Breakwater, Del., Feb. 10. -The four-masted schooner Sarah W. Lawrence, from Newport News, with a cargo of coal for Boston, was today blown aground on the Hen and Chick ens shoals off Cape Henlopen, Del. The crew of nine men and the cap tain's wife were rescued by the Cape Henlopen life saving crews. The schooner broke in two after the ten persons had been taken off. They were landed at Lewes, Del. The sea was running so high that it was impossible for the life savers alone to go to the assistance of the .strained vessel and a tug was called upon to tow the life savers in a 1'iunch out to the schooner. The Cape Henlopen men risked their lives in putting ther boat through the pound ing surf, but they reached the schoon er safely and just as the hull of the Liwrence became submerged. Those aboard were huddled on the fore house of the sunken vessel. A NEGRO'S CLOSE SHAVE. Tied to Stake For Lynching Return ed to Jail. (By Wire to the Morning Star.) Tampa, Fla., Feb. 10. The revenue cutter Onondaga today towed up the coast Cape Lookout Shoals lightship No. 80, which broke adrift and lost her mooring in the storm of February 8. It was not unnatural that in the ab solute absence of political experience President Grant should not only have had much to learn concerning the na ture and conduct of civil government, but that he should also have bad much to unlearn of the mental abits and the ways of thinking he had acquire In the exercise of large indeed, almost unlimited military command. This was strikingly illustrated by some re markable incidents. As usual, the nominations made by the president for cabinet offices were promptly ratified by the senate with out being referred to any committee. But after this had been done it was remembered and reported to President Grant that one of the nominees so confirmed, A. T. Stewart of New York, whom President Grant had selected for the secretaryship of the treasury, as a person engaged in commerce was disqualified by one of the oldest laws on the statute book In fact, the act of Sept. 2, 1789, establishing the treas ury department. That this law, which provided that the treasury department, having the administration of the cus torn houses under its control, should not have at its head a merchant or im porter in active business, was entirely proper indeed, a necessary one bad never been questioned. The next morn ing, March 6, 1 had occasion to call upon President Grant for the purpose of presenting to him a congratulatory message from certain citizens of it. Louis. I found him alone engaged in writing something on a half sheet of note paper. "Mr. President," 1 said. "I see you are busy, and I do not wish to interrupt you. My business can wait." "Never mind," he answered. "I am only writing a message to the senate." My business was quickly dis posed of, and I withdrew. In the course of that day's session of the senate a message from the presi dent was brought in in which, after quoting the statute of Sept. 2. 17S0 the president asked that Mr. Stewart be exempted by joint resolution of the two houses of congress from the op eration of the law which stood in Mr. Stewart's way. There were some signs of surprise among senators when the message was read, and Mr. Sherman at once asked unanimous consent to introduce a bill in accordance with the president's wish. But Mr. Sumner ob jected to the-immediate consideration thereof because of its great importance. This stopped further proceedings, and the bill was laid on the table, never to be heard of again. Home endorsement, the public ex pression of Wilmington' people, should be evidence beyond dispute for every Wilmington reader. Surely the ex perience of friends and neighbors, cheerfully given by them, will carry more weight than the utterances of strangers residing in far away places. Read the following: Mrs. M. E. Bordeaux, 510 S. Second St., Wilmington, N. C, says: "I can recommend Doan's Kidney Pills as 1 used them with good results. I had dull pains through my back and loins and some days they were so severe that I could hardly get about to do my housework. Added to this was. a too frequent action of the kidney se cretions which caused me a great deal of annoyance. The contents ,of one box of Doan's Kidney Pills, procured from Robert R. Bellamy's drug store stopped the backache and also : dispos ed of the kidney weakness. My hus band also used Do?n's Kidney Pills for a lameness in his back and they relieved him at once."
