A dispatch from Pittsboro says that in a free-for-all fight at a negro festival two miles out from Pittsboro, Friday night, John Moore, a negro, had his nose cut entirely off m the general mix-up, and before any of the crowd was struck with the idea of looking for the missing part it is said a 'possum dog ate the nose. j From the Edenton Transcript it is learned that pile drivers are being assembled for the purpose of renew ing work on the long bridge across Albemarle Sound, and it will no doubt be pushed to completion. The already large and rapidly increasing freight and passenger traffic of the Norfolk & Southern road makes imperitive the demand for no delay in transit. j Grensboro Record: The secreta-. ries of the various fair associations in North Carolina, 'South Carolina and Virginia are holding a meeting at the McAdoo Hotel this afternoon for the purpose of arranging a circuit of the fairs to be held next fall so as not to conflict in the dates. The secreta ries will also discuss the question of securing high class attractions for the different fairs. The meeting is large ly attended and another session will be held tonight to complete the work. Washington Messenger: The cooperage plant at Washington Heights starts up this week, thus ad ding a number of dollars to the pay roll of the city. It is understood that it is very probable that this plant wilt be greatly increased in the near f u-. ture, adding other lines of manufac-, ture employing a large number ol ; persons. It is also understood that there is another factory to be located near the sash, door and blind factory on Washington Heights, to manufac-j ture toys and novelties of all kinas employing 100 or more persons. Newbern Sun: The Board of vCounty Commissioners met last night in special session to settle the question whether the county offices should remain fee offices or be put on a salary basis. At this meeting the commissioners decided that on Janu ary 1, 1910, the offices would become salaried, and the holders of these po sitions shall receive the following sal aries, out of which they are to pay all clerk and deputy hire: Sheriff $3,700; clerk of the court, $3,000; Register ol Deeds $2,500; and treasurer, $1,000 a Srear. Salisburv Post: Mr. Walter Geo. Newman has again become president of the Union Copper Mine at Gold Hill and ha s resumed operation of the ; mine. Mr. Newman talked interest j ingly of the Union mine to the Post ; man while waiting here for his train.' He says the Union Copper Mine is the ' richest in the world he has always j believed it and will stick to it. The, company has been reorganized, all the j indebtedness canceled, and it has now in the bank a working capital of $50,000, besides some $15U,0UU suo scribed and not yet paid. Wilson Times: Denutv U. S Marshal John D. Mears brought to j Wilson Edmond D. Hart, the negro j postmaster at Prlnceville, in Hiage combe county, who is under the charge of embezzlement. Hart admits that he is guilty of the charge, but says the amount of his peculations were made good and that he was un der the impression that the matter bad been dropped. S. H. Vick, a weal thy negro and ex-postmaster, of Wil son, went on his bond for two hun dred dollars for Hart's appearance at Federal court which convenes in Ra leigh next May. Statesville Landmark: As stated in the last issue of The Landmark, the superintendent, Prof. L. O. White, who is working in co-operation with the State Department of Agriculture and the Farmers' Co-operative Dem onstration Work of the National De partment of Agriculture, has been pushing the organization of Boys' Corn Clubs. The value of this work is apparent to every one and need not be discussed here. Suffice it to say ! that the main object is to stimulate an interest in farm work by studying soils, crops, fertilizers, plant breed ing, methods of cultivation, etc. Statesville Mascot: A mineral known as manganese has been found on the lands of Mr. W. H. Deal, of Eufola. Route No. 1, about eight miles from this city. This is a new mineral product for Iredell, and it was discov ered by Mr. C. M. Bower, a mining engineer of this city. Mr. Bower stat ed that this mineral covered a large area of land, and it runs in sheets varying from one-half to one inch thick, and has appearance of iron. It is liserl in hrtrrleninp- stppl nkn frv the phosphorus properties it contains, IHU It is' a very much needed mineral by the large steel works, and. Mr. Bower claims that with the proper working it coul I be made a fine paying mine. Goldsboro Argus: Kirby Watson and Nellie Anderson, the young cou ple who disappeared Saturday night, were inarried Sunday in Selma. after securing a marriage license in Smith field l.-.te Saturday night. They ex perienced much difficulty in securing the necessary legal paper, but finally ; succeeded in being married. The young bride has just passed her 14th birthday.
