The cotton market was unsettled! today and while The closing tone was steady last prices showed a net loss of 5 to 10 points. The market opened steady at an ad vance of 2 to 4 points, which was not a full response to firm cables. After filing 2 to 3 points net lower, prices rallied to about the closing figures of the previous day, but there was no aggressive support and, later, the market weakened again under "a re newal of scattering liquidation and lo cal bear pressure. j While the Liverpool market was higher than due, the smaller English spot sales attracted some unfavorable attention and further; reports of de creased acreage in tie Eastern b-slt seemed to be offset, so far as senti ment was concerned at the moment, by further rains in Texas and claims that the drouth in the Southwest had heen effectually broken. The decline during the afternoon was probably promoted also by re ports that cotton was being shipped in this direction a little more freely for delivery on the near months and th close was within a point or two of the lowest. Arrivals of cptton at New York yesterday were the heaviest for some time, amounting; to a little over - 000 bales. Southern markets official ly reported early were generally un changed to l-8c lower. New York, April 28. There was a striking change in-the tone of the stock market from that of yesterday. Prices! moved upwards t- aggressively and In many Instances raDidly. The demand was large and widely distribu ted arid :. the . tip ward movement em brace the list quite generally. Buying was congested, however, in some of the stocks that are the greatest favor ites with' the traders and are most in fluential in their sympathetic effect qui speculative sentiment. r Reading, the Harrinjan stocks and United States Steel were the leaders of the move ment and no more effective leaders areto be found in the list. The origin of the jbuying or the motive of it was not discernible, the day's news, offer ing nothing to change strikingly the position of affairs. The United States Steel statement of earnings for the past quarter was of favorable, effect and that stock was conspicuous in the day's strength. ' Foreign buying in this market was an influential : element ; in the ; day's market, the sentimental effect being considerably beyond the practical ab sorption of stocks which was effected. The change of Sovereigns in Turkey, although known , to have occurred yes terday; was taken more account of to- day. v i Continental centers bought May . .10 35 stobks! in London on account of the jJuly . .10 50 Turkish situation ana , the effect was .Sept ..10 65 passed on to the New York market. There was a brisk movement In the Gould group of stocks in concert, and this: was taken" to indicate an organiz ed market support, for those stocks based on suppositions that the plan for financing the' needs of those proper ties for new capital was being matur ed. Reading was more responsive than yesterday to the prospect of an agreement between anthracite ope rators! and miners over wages. The Rock Island group was helped by the favorable showing of earnings for March. United States Steel sold with in a small fraction of the highest pri ces of? the present year. The gains of the day were scarcely at all impaired by the late profit taking movement. Bonds were strong. Total sales, par value, ; wre $5,968,000. Total sales of stocks today were 748,400 shares.
